The villains of Snow White, The Little Mermaid, Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty are all witches; women who wield dark magic to maledict the innocent. In stark contrast, Formosan aboriginal mythology villains take on decidedly dissimilar roles. In the Paiwan story of Pali, for example, Pali is a young boy who, through no fault of his own, is cursed with a pair of red eyes that instantaneously kill all living things that they see. Pali’s identity and the reasons for his evil acts are diametrically opposed to those found in “typical” Western tales. This article investigates the identities and motives of villains in Formosan aboriginal stories. Despite the unfortunate lack of related material in English, Taiwan Indigene: Meaning Through Stories (臺灣原住民的神話與傳說套書) offers a unique look into the redirection of English literature to source from a wider geographic and ethnographic perspective and serves as the primary data source for this research. Works done in this vein indicate a greater openness toward the “other” ethnic groups that remain almost completely absent from English literature. The identities of the villains and the elements motivating their nefarious deeds are investigated in detail. Can the villains of such stories be grouped broadly according to identity? If so, what aspects can be used to describe that identity? What root causes can be identified with regard to the malevolent acts that they perpetrate? The ambitions behind this study include facilitating a lifting of the veil on the mysterious cultures native to Formosa and promoting a greater understanding of, and appreciation for, the rich and complex myths of the Formosan aboriginal peoples. -

The so-called September 21 Earthquake, measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale, dealt a sharp blow to the Taiwanese tourism industry, with the worst impact being suffered by the international tourism sector. To revitalize the dramatic decline in inbound tourist flows, the government of Taiwan implemented a series of swift countermeasures. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether Taiwan tourism has rebounded completely from the crisis. This research establishes a model for Taiwan’s inbound demand to predict the volume of visitor arrivals after the quake (September 1999 to July 2000). The forecasts are based on the seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) model which are then compared with the actual volume of visitor arrivals to analyze the recovering status. Empirical results indicate that the island’s inbound arrivals have not yet fully recovered from the earthquake’s devastation after 11 months. r 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved. ROBERTS University of California, San Diego he Chinese government has long been suspected of hiring as many as 2 million people to surrep- titiously insert huge numbers of pseudonymous and other deceptive writings into the stream of T real social media posts, as if they were the genuine opinions of ordinary people. Many academics, and most journalists and activists, claim that these so-called 50c party posts vociferously argue for the government’s side in political and policy debates. As we show, this is also true of most posts openly accused on social media of being 50c. Yet almost no systematic empirical evidence exists for this claim https://doi.org/10.1017/S0003055417000144 . or, more importantly, for the Chinese regime’s strategic objective in pursuing this activity. In the first large-scale empirical analysis of this operation, we show how to identify the secretive authors of these posts, the posts written by them, and their content. We estimate that the government fabricates and posts about 448 million social media comments a year. In contrast to prior claims, we show that the Chinese regime’s strategy is to avoid arguing with skeptics of the party and the government, and to not even discuss controversial issues. We show that the goal of this massive secretive operation is instead to distract the public and change the subject, as most of these posts involve cheerleading for China, the revolutionary history of the Communist Party, or other symbols of the regime. -

Databases were systematically searched between 2010 and 2012 and 60 papers were selected for review. (Fig.1, Fig.2). About 50-60 thousand Chinese go oversea for medical treatment not including the health examination and plastic surgery. Moreover, the target Asia countries are India and Thailand because they provide more cheaper medical services. There are lots of Chinese individuals came to Taiwan searching medical evaluation and therapy about that time. However, due to the political policy changed that the Chinese people are prohibited to come to Taiwan individually, therefore, the medical tourism were marked reduced. In the meantime, China tries to develop inbound and outbound medical tourism themselves and providing more cheaper and quality medical treatment and health examination. It has produced the need for a computing workforce, and increasingly, diversity is becoming an integral aspect of that workforce. Today, educational outreach programs with ICT components that are extending education to Indigenous communities in BC are charting a new direction in crossing the cultural barrier in education by tailoring their curricula to distinct Indigenous cultures, commonly within broader science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) initiatives. These efforts require examination, as they integrate Indigenous cultural material and guidance into what has been a largely Euro-Western-centric domain of education. Postcolonial computing theory provides a lens through which this integration can be investigated, connecting technological development and education disciplines within the parallel goals of cross-cultural, cross-colonial humanitarian development. -

Students move from computer simulations to physical renderings, to repurposing STEM innovation and discovery in the service of Indigenous community development. We begin with the math and computing ideas in traditional Anishinaabe arcs; describe their translation into software and physical rendering techniques, and fnally their workshop implementation with a mix of Native and non-Native students. Quantitative and qualitative analyses of pre-survey and post-survey data indicate increases in students’ understanding of Indigenous knowledge, their creative ability to utilize it in moving from algorithmic to physical designs, and their visions for new hybrid forms of Indigenous futu- rity. We use these fndings to argue that culture-based education needs to shift from a vin- dicationist mode of admiring ancient achievements, to one that highlights students’ agency in a generative relationship with cultural knowledge. ORIENTAL ARCHIVE 78, 2010 • 397 The Social Construction of a Myth: An Interpretation of Guo Jingming’s Parable Marco Fumian Myth and Culture Industry The nexus between mass culture production and the creation of myths is one that has very often been underlined by contemporary critics. Edgar Morin, in his early analysis of the culture industry (namely, the complex of commercial institutions producing mass culture in modern capitalist societies), observed how mass culture contributes to the shaping of the imaginary of the people “according to mental relations of projection and identification polarized on symbols, myths and images of culture as well as on the mythic or real personalities who embody those values.”1 Umberto Eco, treating the Superman comic strip cycle as a myth, analogized the popular American superhero with other heroes of classic and modern mythology. In addition, moving from a comparison between the patterns of production of religious culture in medieval Europe and the mechanisms of cultural production established by the modern American culture industry, he noted that the process of myth creation (“mythicization”) is first and foremost an institutional fact that proceeds from the top down; nevertheless, in order to become actualized, this process must sink its roots into a social body and encounter some mythopoetic tendencies emanating from the bottom that constitute the basis of a common popular sensibility.2 In the same essay, Eco also provided an apt definition of the concept of “mythicization,” which according to him would be: “an unconscious symbolization, an identification of the object with a sum of purposes that cannot be always rationalized, a projection in an image of tendencies, aspirations, fears particularly emerging in an individual, a community, a specific historical age.”3 When Guo Jingming 郭敬明 published his first novel, in 2003, a powerful aggregate of symbolic signification was generated in China, originating both from the messages transmitted by the novel and the qualities embodied by the author. -

Ever since the region has been renamed, some visitors have started to express that Shangri-La County has transformed into a theme park and has lost its authenticity. The current essay explored, by using Bryman’s (2004) theory of Disneyization as a framework, whether it can be said that the name change into Shangri-La has changed the region into a theme park. The resources of this research were scholarly literature, travel blogs and TripAdvisor reviews about Shangri-La. Of the four principles mentioned in Disneyization, that all describe a trend common to a theme park, the principles of theming, hybrid consumption and merchandising were all found to be take place in the Shangri-La region. -
