How the Chinese Government Fabricates Social Media Posts

ROBERTS University of California, San Diego he Chinese government has long been suspected of hiring as many as 2 million people to surrep- titiously insert huge numbers of pseudonymous and other deceptive writings into the stream of T real social media posts, as if they were the genuine opinions of ordinary people. Many academics, and most journalists and activists, claim that these so-called 50c party posts vociferously argue for the government’s side in political and policy debates. As we show, this is also true of most posts openly accused on social media of being 50c. Yet almost no systematic empirical evidence exists for this claim https://doi.org/10.1017/S0003055417000144 . or, more importantly, for the Chinese regime’s strategic objective in pursuing this activity. In the first large-scale empirical analysis of this operation, we show how to identify the secretive authors of these posts, the posts written by them, and their content. We estimate that the government fabricates and posts about 448 million social media comments a year. In contrast to prior claims, we show that the Chinese regime’s strategy is to avoid arguing with skeptics of the party and the government, and to not even discuss controversial issues. We show that the goal of this massive secretive operation is instead to distract the public and change the subject, as most of these posts involve cheerleading for China, the revolutionary history of the Communist Party, or other symbols of the regime. -

But in more concisely we can describe ‘Modernization’ is sort of modernity in many ways specially economical, social, scientific, technological, industrial, cultural and even more we can say political progress. As we are discussing the institutional modernization that cover all the above modernity, can be rural development , rationalization and even urbanization to add few. In my opinion, ‘Institutional Modernization’ is a process of development and a progress of various degrees of institutions in a society. If we see the progress today that China has developed a treasure of modernity in terms of its World figure both in economic development and its strong military power with countless path of ups and downs in the past. We are more concerned with the historical study of its institutional modernization than a mere philosophical debate over its development and can discuss its various levels of struggle for ‘Substitute Modernity’2 since mid-19th century(the two opium wars) to till date. FIRST MODERNIZATION: China’s Historical Background After the two opium war from 1840-1860, all high ranking mandarins Zeng Guofan, Zuo Zongtang, Zhang Zhidong and Li Hongzhang during the late Qing Dynasty actively predicated in country’s development what was known as self-strengthening movement. -

ORIENTAL ARCHIVE 78, 2010 • 397 The Social Construction of a Myth: An Interpretation of Guo Jingming’s Parable Marco Fumian Myth and Culture Industry The nexus between mass culture production and the creation of myths is one that has very often been underlined by contemporary critics. Edgar Morin, in his early analysis of the culture industry (namely, the complex of commercial institutions producing mass culture in modern capitalist societies), observed how mass culture contributes to the shaping of the imaginary of the people “according to mental relations of projection and identification polarized on symbols, myths and images of culture as well as on the mythic or real personalities who embody those values.”1 Umberto Eco, treating the Superman comic strip cycle as a myth, analogized the popular American superhero with other heroes of classic and modern mythology. In addition, moving from a comparison between the patterns of production of religious culture in medieval Europe and the mechanisms of cultural production established by the modern American culture industry, he noted that the process of myth creation (“mythicization”) is first and foremost an institutional fact that proceeds from the top down; nevertheless, in order to become actualized, this process must sink its roots into a social body and encounter some mythopoetic tendencies emanating from the bottom that constitute the basis of a common popular sensibility.2 In the same essay, Eco also provided an apt definition of the concept of “mythicization,” which according to him would be: “an unconscious symbolization, an identification of the object with a sum of purposes that cannot be always rationalized, a projection in an image of tendencies, aspirations, fears particularly emerging in an individual, a community, a specific historical age.”3 When Guo Jingming 郭敬明 published his first novel, in 2003, a powerful aggregate of symbolic signification was generated in China, originating both from the messages transmitted by the novel and the qualities embodied by the author. -
Creative Spaces Within Which People, Ideas and Systems Interact with Uncertain Outcomes
GIMPEL, NIELSE GIMPEL, Explores new ways to understand the dynamics of change and mobility in ideas, people, organisations and cultural paradigms China is in flux but – as argued by the contributors to this volume – change is neither new to China nor is it unique to that country; similar patterns are found in other times and in other places. Through the Kaleidoscope: Uchiyama Bookstore and Sino-Japanese Visionaries in War and Peace Naoko Kato, PhD The University of Texas at Austin, 2013 Supervisor: Mark Metzler The Republican period in Chinese history (1911-1949) is generally seen as a series of anti-imperialist and anti-foreign movements that coincide with the development of Chinese nationalism. The continual ties between Chinese nationalists and Japanese intellectuals are often overlooked. In the midst of the Sino-Japanese war, Uchiyama Kanzō, a Christian pacifist who was the owner of the bookstore, acted as a cultural liaison between May Fourth Chinese revolutionaries who were returned students from Japan, and Japanese left-wing activists working for the Communist cause, or visiting Japanese writers eager to meet their Chinese counterparts. I explore the relationship between Japanese and Chinese cultural literati in Shanghai, using Uchiyama Bookstore as the focal point. -

While often used interchangeably, they carry slightly dif- ferent connotations. 2. In addition to calling for a radical transformation of Confucian social mores and values prejudicial to women, early feminists also demanded concrete recognition of women’s social and political rights. Prominent among these were the eradication of foot binding, equal rights in inheritance, access to edu- cation and the professions, marital freedoms, including the right to choose one’s own partner and to divorce, the right to vote and be elected to public office, and the abolition of the practice of child-brides, concubinage, and prostitution. 3. The exploration of ideological impacts will be discussed through looking at the theoretical discourse and empirical discourse. The theoretical discourse which will be developed in this study based on the theory of ideology and the theory of neoliberalism. There will be many other theoretical themes discussed in study, but all of them are going to serve the discourse about ideology and neoliberalism. The discourse about the theory of ideology and theory of neoliberalism intends to provide the background and theoretical framework for the empirical discourse.
