Steers to £1335 Heifers to £1035

At this time of year with the majority of cattle out to grass numbers were in shorter supply and the overall quality very much represented the tail end of the yarded cattle. The trade never the less was as strong as ever for the best quality sorts although the second grade types were a little more difficult to place. An entry of strong cattle up from St Austell saw best 27m Charolais steers achieve the top price on the day of £1335, others close at £1245 (x2), £1170 (x2) and £1055. Outlying Charolais bullocks from Graham Tancock of Broadclyst to £1230 & £1110, South Devons off the same farm also to £1230. Best 23m Limousin steers to £1200 for Messrs Loud of Witheridge, also £1160 for Michael Tooze of Paignton. Smart 15m steers of the same breed to £1015 (x3) for GC Stanbury & Son of while an entry of nineteen 14-15m steers from Mike Hutchings, saw his best Limousin crosses make £1010 (x5). Strong Simmentals (25m) from Brian & Robert Moore of to £1220, younger sorts to £1120 (x4). British Blue bullocks to £1185 for a pair of 28m animals from David Drew of Lapford. Angus steers to a top of £1135 for a pair from AJ Smith & Son of East Budleigh and over thirty month to £1100 for Brian & Robert Moore. Best forward Friesians to £1005 for David Withers, Whimple, others to £985, £905 and £875. With a shortage of top quality meat heifers only a handful made over £900, selling to a top of £1035 for an 18 month female from Tony Mears of . Blues at 25 months to £995 again for Brian & Robert Moore. An entry of ten smart 13-15 month Simmental heifers suitable for finishing or bulling from Andrew Palk of saw his best to £995, other groups at £900, £865, £860 and £840. Limousins to £945 for a 21m heifer from Messrs Loud.

Steers to £840 Heifers to £760

A slightly reduced entry of stirks and suckled calves met a rip roaring trade throughout looking dearer on the week. A superb entry from David Skelley Junior of met a strong trade with the best of the steers reaching £840, a pen of cracking Charolais followed, attaining £835 (8m), with others to £795 (9m). Another wonderful entry this time from Tony Mears of Chagford saw steers top at £815, with younger sorts reaching £750 (7m). Andrew Johns of Newton Abbot achieved £810 for Charolais steers (9m), Mike Bassett and family up from South Brent saw the best of their steers attain £790 this time for Lim crosses (10) with a second pen of similar sorts reaching £780 (11m). Brittan & Co from South Brent hit £775 for South Devon steers, as did Stuart Westcott of Longdown presenting smart Lim crosses (13m), whilst A Routley of reached £770 for Charolais crosses (11m). Heifer trade was quite frankly electric, topping at £760 again for David Skelley Junior, with other pens to £750 and £740, Andrew Johns reached £755 for Charolais crosses (10m) with others to £740. Tony Mears saw South Devon heifers attain £750, Patrick Stanbury of Chagford realised £735, whilst good Lim crosses from again from Mike Basset and family topped at £680.

A larger entry of calves sold to a cracking trade CALVES - 10.15 am particularly for small calves which were off the clock! Top of the day was £410 for An Aberdeen CALVES Bulls Heifers Angus bull for Messrs GE Ellett & Son of Exmouth Breed TOP AVE TOP AVE who also sold a Simmental bull at £400 and a British Blue 1 375 375 5 275 197 Charolais at £385. A cracking young Limousin bull Limousin 2 410 347 5 198 146 from Kathryn Starr of Dunkeswell sold well at £410. A smart Simmental bull sold at £385 for Messrs FNL Charolais 6 385 311 4 215 203 & E Worth & Sons of and a smart British Simmental 2 400 390 1 338 338 Blue bull sold to £375 for Paul Hendy of Hereford 13 292 184 96 250 170 . Other weaned Angus bulls to £400 x 2 for Nick Cordwent of Crediton. Other Charolais Aberdeen Angus 20 410 218 27 385 154 bulls to £330, £305 & £300 for Messrs RH & MJ Holstein / Friesian 32 150 66 Hurford of . Hereford Bulls to £292 for Shorthorn 2 162 95 Messrs FNL & E Worth & Sons. Heifers topped at Brown Swiss £385 for a pair of Aberdeen Angus heifers from 3 158 98 Nick Cordwent. Simmental heifers to £338 for Messrs GE Ellet & Son. Young calves saw British Blue heifers to Nick & Jane Bond of Axminster and a run of smart young Angus heifers to £252 x 2 & £250 x 2 for Nick Cordwent and Hereford heifers to £250 for Richard, June & Anthony Barton of Cullompton and £225 for James Baker of Aylesbeare. Friesians were an excellent trade topping at £150 x 2 for Messrs GE Ellett & Son with others to £125 & £100 for Richard, June & Anthony Barton, £120 x 2 for Diepenbroek Farms LTD of Seaton and £108 for Nick & Jane Bond. A Shorthorn bull sold well to £162 for Roy Collins of Honiton. Brown Swiss bulls to £158 for Messrs FJ Luxmore & Son of Crediton. 125 DAIRY CATTLE – 11.30AM Auctioneers: Mark Davis 07773 371774 & Mark Bromell 07966 430001

Another large entry of Dairy sold to a selective trade with fewer buyers around the ring. That said quality was not as good as recent sales, the best sold to £1450 for a fresh heifer from GCB Davis of Tiverton who sold other heifers to £1300. A decent heifer from David & Sherrie Turner of Torrington sold at £1250 and a Pedigree Ayrshire heifer sold at £1200 for David & Jake Sayer of Bridgwater. Only second quality cows forward sold to £1150 for Mark Rundle of . A consignment of Dutch Cows met very little interest with some smart Dutch bulling heifers looking well bought at £540- £580. Heifer calves met an excellent trade topping at £260 x 2 for Alistair Pratt of Tiverton with a Shorthorn x to £230 for GCB Davis who also sold three Holsteins at £200 apiece. A red Ayrshire x calf sold at £200 for Graham Vallis of Cullompton.

21 ORPHAN LAMBS

A respectable number sold to a strong trade given the time of year with Lyn Loosemore of Yeoford selling her three month old lambs at £30 apiece whilst Graham Kivell of sold his consignment of nine varying lambs very well at £28 and Robert Rogers of had two at £26. Average £23.81.

70 STORE HOGGS

Fewer Store Hoggs sold to a dearer trade, in line with national prime hogg returns, reaching £80 for C Parker of Ashburton and £77.50 for RG & D Thomson of Pennymoor, being the only short keep hoggs on offer. Mediums were upwards of £47 to £69.50 for MM Wedlake & Son of Black Dog.

49 GRAZING EWES

These sold to £74.50 for James Skevington of Harbertonford, £70.50 for Joe Emmett of Cullompton, £65.50 for Dorset’s from A Wotton of Kingsbridge and £60.50 for Andrew Goddard of Brixton.

106 BREEDING EWES

A consignment of Dorset mainly FM ewes from Edwin Tucker & Lynette Parkhouse of Pennymoor sold well and to £115, £106, £96 and £88 whilst their Zwartbles crosses made £80. Messrs Reddaway Ltd of Honeychurch sold four pens of Suffolk cross ewe hoggs well at £98 and JL Wotton of Kingsbridge saw his Suffolk cross ewes achieve £73.

COUPLES (274 EWES & 389 LAMBS)

A tidy number of couples were met by a good crowd of buyers and sold to a variable trade for the quality on offer. Best ewe doubles to £184 for a 6T Hampshire ewe with two strong lambs from Joe Emmett of Cullompton, £176 & £168 for Border Leicester/Scotch half bred Full & Broken Mouth ewes for Jonathan Lentern of Chagford with smart Texel sired lambs, £174 & £160 for Suffolk cross doubles from Patrick Parish of Uffculme and £167 & £165 for 6T-BM Mules from Steve & Sarah Cole of Calverleigh. Hogg doubles to £165 for Suffolk Mules from Tony Pickard of , £162 for NC Mules from Robert & Christine Steer of and £158 for more of the same from Peter Tucker of Cadeleigh. Hogg singles peaked at £160 & £154 for Suffolk crosses again from Tony Pickard who also had his NC Mule singles at £156. Other NC Mule singles at £158 for Robert & Christine Steer and £150 again for Peter Tucker while a smart pen of Texel cross hoggs from Rob Davies of Diptford achieved £144. Older ewe singles to £130 for both Joe Emmett and Patrick Parish, £126 for Robert Rogers and £125 for Youldon Farm Ltd of . Hill ewes coming forward and meeting variable demand from £19-£48, with some singles looking well sold, whilst smaller doubles looked chancey. Averages were back as expected after last week’s quality hogg sale to £133 per outfit (down £23) and per life was £55.20 (back £12).
