*NB. While the South West had relatively low levels of coronavirus infection throughout the initial phases of the pandemic, this has now changed and Devon and Cornwall have recently had some of the highest rates in the country. While remaining restrictions on social contact and social distancing have been lifted and larger events allowed, some local authorities (Cornwall, Isles of Scilly, Devon, Plymouth and Torbay) have been designated 'enhanced response areas', implying targeted, additional support will be deployed for a defined period (5 weeks from Friday 27 August). Face coverings may no longer be mandatory, but are recommended in crowded and enclosed spaces and public transport. Meeting outdoors is safer and vastly reduces the risk of airborne transmission. Let fresh air in if you meet indoors. Steve Brown, Director of Public Health Devon urges everybody to continue to act carefully and remain cautious. Please regularly use the free NHS lateral flow/rapid antigen self-tests, which you can also pick up from South Brent Pharmacy - they are easy, quick and convenient, and the result is ready in 30 minutes; if you have symptoms, please isolate and take a PCR test which you can order free on line. If you are eligible and are not yet vaccinated please get a vaccine (see below) The government published its ‘COVID-19 Response: Autumn and Winter Plan 2021’ on 14 September- click here to download the full document. For updated information, current restrictions and guidance on Coronavirus go to: www.gov.uk/coronavirus and www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/.

With food miles, pesticides, welfare standards and food poverty all increasingly in the news, what can we do to support a more sustainable food economy in our area? We have a great line up of contributors who will talk for 5-10 mins each, with time at the end for questions and discussion. - Oliver Lee of ‘How Now Dairy’ is a local, organic dairy farmer, producing and delivering milk products to our community. School Farm aims to grow high-quality organic vegetables which are shared between their members each week. They also run horticultural courses. - Inge Page, Ashburton Community Fridge. Inge will share how the recently established community fridge scheme in Ashburton was set up with the aim of increasing awareness of food sustainability and inspiring local resilience. - Kate from Hylsten Sourdough Bakery and School, , which uses organic, stoneground flour to bake good bread with as little waste from field to loaf as possible - Dartmoor Farmers Association is a group of nearly 100 farmers raising native breeds of livestock using traditional farming methods on sustainable farms. They have formed a co- operative to market their meat. OTHER NEWS • Afghanistan citizens arrivals in Plymouth – Appeal update: As you may be aware the UK government has pledged to home 20,000 Afghan citizens over the next few years under the government’s Afghan Relocation and Assistance Policy. Plymouth City will welcome and help relocate citizens who worked with British Forces in Afghanistan, most arriving with very few belongings. The Aid Redistribution Centre is working in collaboration with Plymouth City Council and organisations supporting this relocation effort. Having appealed on Bank Holiday Monday for donations of basic living items, “just under two and a half tonnes of donations were received in less than 12 hours! This is amazing and again highlights the care and compassion of people in Plymouth, but it does mean we need to pause the appeal at this time please. Donations already promised will be accepted until Friday 3 September. (Thank you to the many donors who were happy for their items to be used to support other causes and charities working with The Aid Redistribution Centre)”. ARC, 27 Burrington Way, Honicknowle, Plymouth, PL5 3LR; email: [email protected]; see: www.thearcplymouth.co.uk/ and www.facebook.com/ARCPlymouth/ for updates. • Suspension of Green/Garden Waste collection: FCC Environment (South Hams recycling and waste contractors) has asked South Hams District Council to suspend all garden waste collections from Monday 16 August. The Council has reluctantly agreed to this to enable FCC Environment to focus on general waste and recycling. Residents are being asked not to put garden waste in the grey wheelie/residual waste bin. (If you do not have the ‘New Super Recycler Service’ in your locality, temporarily, food waste should be put into the grey waste bin.) The Council is offering advice on what residents can do with their garden waste. Although initially this was for four weeks, SHDC have announced that it is to continue, and residents will be notified when they can start using their brown bins again; see: www.southhams.gov.uk/8228. Remember you can take suitable garden waste to SSB’s Marsh composting site on Sunday mornings (see above). The Marsh will welcome garden waste (NB. Not kitchen/food waste) which would normally have been taken in your brown bin collection, but would prefer you not to bring the bin itself as with limited help available, they are not so easy to empty, but to use other means of transport, such as in a car boot/van with tarpaulin or dumpy bag, or by barrow.

• OLD SCHOOL - RAISE THE ROOF: As you may be aware, the roof of the Old School Community Centre is in urgent need of repair. Despite the major campaign which has been running since 2017, with £150,000 needed do the whole roof, the Roof Fund currently stands at £25,764. It could be tackled section by section based on the funds raised, but it would be better to get whole job done at one time. The roof is critical to the existence of the Centre and therefore to all the individuals, groups and organisations who use it. If you are able to help by donating, or can share the information, a ‘JustGiving’ page has been opened which can be accessed through this link:- www.justgiving.com/campaign/theoldschoolroof.

• Soft Plastic recycling at the Co-op: The Co-op’s soft plastic recycling facility is now available in the South Brent store, with a collection point ready for used clean, soft plastics to support Co-op in meeting its goal of using recyclable materials in 100% of own-brand products by the end of 2021. “CLEAN IT: Rinse your packaging out first; SCRUNCH IT: Scrunch it up tight and if it pings back, it's soft plastic; CO-OP IT Pop into Co-op and put it in one of the soft plastic recycling units.” See: www.coop.co.uk/environment/soft-plastics.

• COVID-19 vaccination arrangements: The majority (about 80%) of the adult population has now had two doses of either the Pfizer/BioNTech, Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccines or ‘Moderna’ vaccines. The ‘Novavax’ vaccine is still going through the approval process and a single dose Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) vaccine will be available later this year. If you are aged 18 or are within 3 months of your 18th birthday and have not had your first vaccine you can book your vaccination via the NHS Coronavirus website or by phoning 119. If you are aged 16 or over you can get a COVID-19 vaccine from a walk-in COVID-19 vaccination site without an appointment. Continue to adhere to the measures and restrictions that help limit transmission of the virus. You can drive yourself or arrange for a lift with family or friends. You will need to remain at the site for 15 minutes after vaccination but can drive yourself. If you need help, South Brent & District Caring can offer transport to Covid-19 vaccination appointments. When you have your appointment, ring us on 01364 700282 and leave a message, and we will arrange transport if we can. NB. There is a scam email doing the rounds purporting to be an “OFFICIAL Invitation” from the NHS “for your Covid-19 Passport - UK Digital COVID-19 Certificate / Digital Passport” “Through the certificate, the Commission intends to remove travel restrictions as entry bans, quarantine obligation, and testing” Do not click on the links within such an email, which is designed to get your bank details. (You can get a free NHS COVID Pass to demonstrate your COVID-19 status when travelling abroad via www.gov.uk/guidance/nhs-covid-pass.)
