While the South West had relatively low levels of coronavirus infection throughout the initial phases of the pandemic, this has now changed and Devon and Cornwall have recently had some of the highest rates in the country. While remaining restrictions on social contact and social distancing have been lifted and larger events allowed, some local authorities (Cornwall, Isles of Scilly, Devon, Plymouth and Torbay) have been designated 'enhanced response areas', implying targeted, additional support will be deployed for a defined period (5 weeks from Friday 27 August). Face coverings may no longer be mandatory, but are recommended in crowded and enclosed spaces and public transport. Meeting outdoors is safer and vastly reduces the risk of airborne transmission. Let fresh air in if you meet indoors. Steve Brown, Director of Public Health Devon urges everybody to continue to act carefully and remain cautious. Please regularly use the free NHS lateral flow/rapid antigen self-tests, which you can also pick up from South Brent Pharmacy - they are easy, quick and convenient, and the result is ready in 30 minutes; if you have symptoms, please isolate and take a PCR test which you can order free on line. If you are eligible and are not yet vaccinated please get a vaccine (see below) The government published its ‘COVID-19 Response: Autumn and Winter Plan 2021’ on 14 September- click here to download the full document. Dartmoor Ranger Ella Briens says: “Thank you so much for the help you have been giving this project over the Summer. We are making brilliant progress in the area and will be working again in South Brent from 10am until 3pm. Meet at 10am at Lydia Bridge to join the work party. Bring a packed lunch and drink and gloves. Please email me ([email protected]) to let us know if you can come along and help.” The work follows the survey conducted by ecologist Mervyn Newman Mervyn for Dartmoor National Park to help plan for the control of invasive alien species such as Himalayan Balsam and ‘American Skunk-Cabbage’. The latest free ‘EcoPubHub’ discussion session organised by SSB. With food miles, pesticides, welfare standards and food poverty all increasingly in the news, what can we do to support a more sustainable food economy in our area? We have a great line up of contributors who will talk for 5-10 mins each, with time at the end for questions and discussion. - Oliver Lee of ‘How Now Dairy’ is a local, organic dairy farmer, producing and delivering milk products to our community. He has a strong commitment to sustainable and regenerative farming. - Clare Hargreaves, is a journalist and photographer, specialising in food who is 8 months into her challenge of eating just British food for a year. - Melissa Harvey is from School Farm (Community Supported Agriculture), Dartington. School Farm aims to grow high-quality organic vegetables which are shared between their members each week. They also run horticultural courses. - Inge Page, Ashburton Community Fridge. Inge will share how the recently established community fridge scheme in Ashburton was set up with the aim of increasing awareness of food sustainability and inspiring local resilience. - Kate from Hylsten Sourdough Bakery and School, Buckfastleigh, which uses organic, stoneground flour to bake good bread with as little waste from field to loaf as possible - Dartmoor Farmers Association is a group of nearly 100 farmers raising native breeds of livestock using traditional farming methods on sustainable farms. They have formed a co- operative to market their meat. Please come along at 10am to the wildflower verge outside the play park to try scything for yourself.
