Steers to £1420 Heifers to £1160

Considering the large volumes of cattle now coming onto the market everywhere, plus the recent wet weather Friday’s trade looked as strong as could be expected, particularly for any forward types, although anyone travelling with any of those younger weathered lesser sorts saw lower demand. Store steers topped at a staggering £1420 given for a tremendous Blonde steer (28m) from George Metherell, Lewdown, other smart sorts from George saw a trio with similar comments rise to £1345 apiece. A couple of grand Hereford steers (26m) from CD & EM Gooding of Wiggaton hit an impressive £1305 with a pair of Charolais bullocks (just 17m) from Fred & Jennifer Trott of Thorverton reaching £1295, also a bunch of seven likewise sorts from The Mildon family Cadbury fetched £1185 a life. Michael Tooze, Broadsands usually brings some smart forward steers to market and didn’t disappoint with Limousin steers (27m) to £1260 whilst Blue steers (22m) from John & Jenny Squire, sold for £1175, younger Blues (15m) from R & J Bowles, Broadclyst sold well and to £1165. Older Native breed store steers saw £1130 for South Devons (28m) from M Venner, with Angus (22m) rising to £1115 again for CD & EM Gooding. Younger steers saw the best to £1060 for a quality bunch of six Charolais (14m) from Phillip & Courtney Heard of with an eye catching Limousin steer (13m) seeing the hammer fall at £1050 for Valerie Stockman of South Brent. Friesian sorts sold to £840 (24m) for J & G Hawkins of Thorverton with later born kinds (22m) to £790 for Paul Evison of . Plenty of well summered store heifers on offer with a top of £1160 for a Blue (28m) from BJ & CA Ellis of Musbury with a pair of smashing Blondes (28m) to match his steers to £1150 for George Metherell. A trio of muscled Limousin heifers (22m) from G Brown, Ashill made £1025 apiece with Charolais to £1010 (27m) for M Venner and £990 (19m) for Clive Timms & Family of . Best South Devon heifers (18m) to £905 for Dave & Karen Smith of whilst a pen of six superb young (13m) Charolais females from Phillip & Courtney Heard ran to £950 each.

A good entry of younger cattle saw the best suckler bred sorts sell well, whilst dairy breed types witnessed a little less bite! David Skelley Snr of back again with usual top end sorts, with the best of the Charolais cross steers attaining £865 (9m) with others realising £825 (9m). Steve Arrowsmith-Brown of presented a cracking consignment of South Devons with the best of the steers reaching £835 (11m), Ben Drury of Dartmouth realised £795 for a smart Blue steer (10m), with Limousin steers from the same home reaching £735 (10m). A smart entry from RA Cole of Yelverton saw the best of the steers reach £670 for Herefords (8m), with well-presented Blue steers from the same home hitting £665, BM Baker of Cadbury topped at £665 for (9m) Angus steers, whilst AW Francis of Okehampton achieved £635 for Simmental crosses (9m). Heifers topped at £740 for David Skelley Snr with (10m) Charolais, Steve Arrowsmith-Brown realised £725 for South Devon heifers (14m), Rob and Una Mingo of Whitestone presented well farmed Blue heifers reaching £610 (9m), with similar sorts from RA Cole (8m) hitting £595, whilst another good consignment of Simmental cross heifers from the Furneaux family up from saw the best attain £605 (11m), with others to £595.

Limousin heifers to £275 for Alf Harris & Sons of Tiverton. Hereford heifers to £225 for Derek Burrough. Friesians topped at £190 for an outstanding British Friesian from Messrs KB & AC Terry of Okehampton. Others to £130 for Messrs KF & LW Mitcham of Exeter, £125 for Mark Reed of Umberleigh and £95 for Ian Pincombe. A cracking run of Montbeliarde bulls sold well to £155, £150, £130, £125, £110 & £100 for Richard & Rosie Cheriton of Crediton. 1518 SHEEP – 11AM Auctioneer: Russell Steer 07788 318701

1269 STORE LAMBS

A smaller than expected show of stores saw the lambs a much stronger trade reaching £70 & £69.50 for forward lambs from Roger Jewell of , £69.50 & £68 also for Charollais sorts from Lovaton Farm Partnership of South Tawton and a strong run from Peter Watts of Plympton sold at £68 (x2), £67.50 (x2) & £65.50 (x3). Tregerles Farm Estates of Newquay headed almost 400 Organic stores with their best Easycare wether lambs at £69 & £66.50 as well as second draw ewe lamb at £65. £65 also for two pens of organic store lambs from first time vendor Julian Branfield of and no less than four further vendors sold pens of conventional lambs at £65. Well-bred medium lambs generally around the £60 mark, with very few long term lambs less than £45 and nothing less than £35 to give a much improved average of £58.89, up just over £3.

38 GRAZING EWES & RAMS

Grazing ewes sold to £68, £65 & £56 for William Scott of South Brent with Suffolk cross ewes and wethers whilst Mark Snow of sold his meated mules at £52.

189 BREEDING EWES & RAMS

The highlight of today’s sale was a special entry of two consignments of MV and Pedigree Lleyn ewes. Prices were headed by Sue Redwood of Lifton with Shearlings at £145 & £140 as well as older ewes at £110 & £94. Messrs Waters Investments of Gillingham sold their two pens of Shearlings well at £132 & £120. Elsewhere Tony Pickard of sold two pens of Texel x BFL ewes at £92, JP & DA Derham of Westwood made £85 & £75 and Robert Partridge of Teignmouth was delighted to receive £78 for the best of his run! A large offering of nearly 50 Rams saw decent demand for quality breeding while some strong reserved or second quality rams remained unsold. RT & H Kingdon of Barnstaple travelled down with quality Texel’s that met with much bidding to sell at £400 (x2) & £370 (x2) as well as a Suffolk at £280. Reg & Annie Pedrick of Ashburton had a Suffolk at £300, Messrs Bonner Farms of Umberleigh sold a Texel x Charollais at £280, pure Charollais at the same money and Dorset Shearling at £250. Also at £280 was Clifford Dennis of who also parted with a Suffolk at £220 and Roy Harvey of Harbertonford sold a Texel x Charollais at £200.

Next week we have the final part of the Genuine Flock Dispersal of 100 In-Lamb Dorset & Charollais cross Dorset Ewes 4T-BM from AP Stephens of Venn Farm, , Ivybridge. Comprising 88 Ewes Scanned in lamb for mid Nov- mid Dec, 10 Ewes & Ewe Lambs running with the ram for mid Feb and four quality aged Charollais Rams.

The season has started in Ernest with more entered for the next few weeks. A young Dorset ewe with two smart purebred ewe lambs at foot topped the sale when it made £165 (£55/life) followed by full and broke doubles at £150, both for John Vooght of Dunsford while singles peaked at £120 (£60/life) for Dave Fox of Cheriton Fitzpaine and £115 again for John Vooght.

Once again another massive entry saw an excellent trade. Quality not just as good but the best sold to £1920 for a smart heifer “Dartview Artes Canada” by Go-Farm Artes from Messrs JJ Palfrey & Son of Dartmouth who sold others to £1680 & £1650. Other heifers to £1680 for Derek Pyle of Exeter. British Friesian heifers to £1600 for first time vendor Messrs JH & JL Gibson of Tiverton. Cows were in strong demand and topped at £1850 for an Organic third calver from Jon & Sue Kittow of Broadclyst who sold the final consignment to disperse their dairy herd with other second calvers to £1850, £1800, £1680 & £1650 twice. Other cows sold to £1700 for a smart second calver from Messrs AC & ER Hammett Ltd of Umberleigh who sold others to £1580 & £1520. Other second calvers to £1550 & £1500 for Messrs EJ & HB Laarveld of . British Friesain cows to £1480 for Messrs JH & JL Gibson. Norwegian Red x cows to £1500 for Roy & James Amor of Yeovil. A Pedigree Jersey heifer sold at £1200 for Jim Elworthy of Cullompton and Pedigree Dairy Shorthorn heifers sold to £1000 for Roy & Fred Collins of Honiton. In-calf Holstein heifers to £1280 & £1150 for Carwithen Farms of Thorverton and a consignment of British Friesian in-calf heifers sold well to £1100 with others at £1050 & £1000. A large entry of Youngstock saw smart groups of non-pedigree bulling heifers to £770 with others to £740 and yearlings to £700, £670 & £660 from Roy & Katherine Emmett of Cullompton. Two Guernsey bulling heifers sold to £670 for Melville & Nicky Jelbert of Penzance. Organic bulling heifer groups sold to £770, £750 & £650 for Messrs Jefferies Bros of Bristol. Organic Ayrshire Crossbred heifers to £530 apiece for Graham Vallis of .

The Special Sale of 60 Pedigree Charolais Cattle saw a steady trade overall, only a handful of bulls forward which saw a top of 3000gns for “Downton Mack” an April 2016 born son of Thrunton Elton from Brian Lavis of Okehampton. Other bulls sold a 2000gns twice for “Wyvern Materpiece” from David Barker of Taunton and “Polgoda Mercedes” from David & Bernadette Stacey of St Austell. The reduction sale of the Penfound herd on behalf of Roger Hopper of Bude saw a decent trade topping at 1700gns for “Penfound Haricot” a 2012 born cow by Burradon Talisman who sold with her April born bull calf by Baggrave . Other similar outfits sold to at 1680gns, 1580gns & 1500gns.The in-calf heifers saw limited interest but the best sold to 1380gns & 1300gns. The commercial entry of Sucklers saw a cracking trade and commenced with a super Pedigree Limousin bull from John & Russell Stevens of Crediton which sold at £2000. Two super Pedigree Limousin cows & calves sold to an exceptional trade for Mike Cowell of with “Rosecroft Jilli” and her April born heifer calf by Newtown Grant sold at £2450 and “Columpark Jolly” sold with her April born heifer calf by Wilodge Goldcard at £1960. Rob & Janet Phipps of Okehampton dispersed their Sucklers to a strong trade topping at £1400 for a 2012 born Hereford with her June born Angus steer calf at foot. Other similar outfits to £1320, £1300 (x2), £1280 (x2), £1260 & £1250. The Charolais stock bull from this farm sold at £1600. Steve Palmer of sold a consignment of Hereford cross cows with Charolais calves at foot to £1320 (x2), £1280 & £1250 with Galloway x heifers with Charolais calves from the same home selling to £1080 twice.
