SHAPIRO, H. A., "Ponos" and "Aponia" , Greek, Roman and Byzantine Studies, 25:2 (1984) p.107 Ponos and Aponia H. A. Shapiro N GRBS 23 (1982) 147-56, A. L. Boegehold presented an inter I esting argument that, in the years 424-421, a group of dissenters in Athens, led by Nikias, who favored making peace with Sparta, adopted as a slogan 1TOVWV 1TaV(TWI_"dJa. This formulation transformed the connotation of 1TOVO~ from a traditionally patriotic expression of the hard work needed to achieve a noble goal to a more pessimistic term for the hardships and suffering of an unnecessarily protracted war. Boegehold adduced passages in Thucydides, Euripides, and Aris tophanes to illustrate the extraordinary popularity and often highly charged rhetorical uses of 1TOVO~ in this period. It may be relevant to introduce in this context a unique depic tion, on an Athenian vase of the following decade, 420-410, of a woman labelled AIlONIA (PLATE 0.1 There is no literary evidence for Aponia as the name of a divinity, mythological figure, or his torical person, and it is clear from other figures on the same vase, to be discussed infra, that Aponia is meant here as a personified abstraction. The word a1Tovia first occurs in extant Greek literature several de cades after the date of this vase,2 in Xenophon's Cyropaedeia (2.2.25), where its connotation is clearly pejorative ("laziness'), and it is linked with {3AaKEia ('indolence', 'stupidity'). Aristotle once uses the word a1Tovia in this negative sense (Rh. 1370aI4), but once also in a more positive, or at least neutral, sense ('freedom from toil', Gen.An. -

APPENDIX 5: MULTILINGUAL DICTIONARY FOR MULTIFAITH AND MULTICULTURAL MEDIATION AND EDUCATION © Thomas Clough Daffern This appendix consists of a work in progress: the attempt to compile an exhaustive dictionary of world languages, focusing on words that are of direct interest to the work of the multifaith and multicultural mediation: such terms include those on the one hand, relating to peace, non-violence, conflict, violence, war, justice, mediation, reparation, as well as terms relating to belief, values, ideas, identity, faith, deity, God, ultimate truth etc. The work presented here is very much a work in progress, as the accompanying table of languages makes clear; some languages have received more attention than others, some are absent, some are under-represented; this is due largely to the ways in which the dictionary has been compiled thus far, the limitations of resources at the editors disposal, and the scattering of volunteer helpers who have aided the research thus far. The editor owes a considerable debt of gratitude to various colleagues for assistance in bringing the project this far, including: Gordana Netkovska, Mary Napper, Sarah Kennedy, Agatha Haun, Surjit Singh, to name but a few. It is hoped in time to further complete this work, which is proving of use in the work of multifaith and multicultural mediation, for which purpose it is intended. It is included here as an appendix to the editor’s thesis, as a way of indicating something of the scope of one of the projects inspired by the work of the MMMS, and transpersonal historiography in action, applied to the study of comparative linguistics and the history of words and their meanings. -

Signature: 2 Abstract While Euripides’ women have attracted a great deal of attention in recent decades, it is now half a century since the last substantial monograph devoted to his male characters. The present thesis examines representations of manliness and male behaviour in Euripidean tragedy. It aims to revisit Euripidean men as characters in their own right, not simply as foils to powerful women, and in relation with ideals of manliness as expressed and experienced in fifth-century Athens. The Introduction is divided thematically into two parts. The first part deals with the emergence of Gender and Men’s Studies from the same theoretical thinking that shaped Feminist thought, and demonstrates how their rhetoric and ideas can be used in literary criticism. The second part uses the idea of masculinity as a cultural construct and focuses on the concept of ‚ideal masculinity‛ as promoted in ancient Greek sources. Four case studies constitute the four main chapters of the thesis, each one of them placing emphasis on different aspects of masculinity and male identity. Chapter 1 focuses on Herakles in Herakles, and deals with questions regarding his relation with femininity, gender balance of roles within the oikos, male domesticity and the existence of multiple definitions of manly courage. -
Euripides' Heracles in the Flesh
BROOKE HOLMES Euripides’ Heracles in the Flesh In this article, I analyze the role of Heracles’ famous body in the representation of madness and its aftermath in Euripides’ Heracles. Unlike studies of Trachiniae, interpretations of Heracles have neglected the hero’s body in Euripides. This reading examines the eruption of that body midway through the tragedy as a part of Heracles that is daemonic and strange, but also integral to his identity. Central to my reading is the figure of the symptom, through which madness materializes onstage. Symptoms were contested sites of interpretation in the late fifth century, supporting both conventional narratives about human suffering and new stories advanced by contemporary medicine and ethics. In exploring the imaginative possibilities of these new stories, I do not privilege a “secular” over a “divine” reading. Rather I aim to offer a model of interaction between medicine and tragedy that sees the cross-breeding of worldviews as productive of innovative drama. INTRODUCTION: HERACLES, THE SYMPTOM, AND THE POETICS OF OVERDETERMINATION Heracles ranks among the classic paradoxes of Greek mythology. Demigod and U¨ bermensch, he exemplifies “the paradigm of transgression that ought to consolidate the norm.”1 Euripides’ Heracles, the only known tragedy devoted to the hero’s madness, has proved as challenging to grasp as its protagonist. The “clinical” realism of Heracles’ symptoms and the theological speculation of the play’s final scene have been read in light of Euripides’ commitment to the new learning of the late fifth century.
