Paul Getty Museum’s extensive collection of Greek painted pottery is especially rich in Athenian black- and red-figure vases of the sixth and fifth centuries B.C. Examples of two of the most distinctive and popular shapes of that period, column-kraters and volute-kraters, are gathered in this fascicule of the Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum, the tenth of the series devoted to the holdings of the J. Paul Getty Museum. These are large vessels, made for mixing wine and water at the symposium. The column-krater—called the “Corinthian krater” in antiquity—takes its modern name from the columnar supports at the rim. It was developed in Corinth by the end of the seventh century B.C. and soon adopted also by potters in Athens, where the shape is one of the most enduring. Uolute- kraters are, in the words of Sir John Beazley, “the vase-shape which has more of the temple in it than any other.” Typically large, with high curling handles, these vases are often finely potted and present expansive fields for decoration. As with many pottery vessel shapes, the form also occurs in metal, and the Getty’s dinoid krater (87.AE.93; entry no. 24) offers a striking example of ceramicists emulating and elaborating upon that costlier medium. Most Athenian red-figure vase-painters seem to have specialized as either cup or pot painters, and the selection of vases and fragments gathered here has been attributed to many significant artists of the fifth century B.C., including Myson, the Pan Painter, the Kleophrades Painter, and Polygnotos. Iconographically, the kraters present a rich and engaging array of motifs and details. Notable is the recurrence of scenes of worship before altars and herms, images of devotion that would have been a central component of the lived experience of ancient Athenians. Besides these scenes of human activity, myths and heroic exploits continued to offer inspiration. Though fragmentary, the elaborate sack of Troy on Polygnotos’s volute-krater (79.AE.198; entry no. 23) demonstrates the ongoing interest in this subject, while the Kleophrades Painter’s krater (77.AE.11; entry no. 19) presents a mythological tour de force, with Peleus battling Thetis, three of Herakles’s Labors, and an extended Amazonomachy. This catalogue marks a renewed commitment to publishing the Getty’s vase collection within the CVA, as the locus classicus of the field. It also marks a major shift forward, for this fascicule has been developed as an open-access digital publication with the option of print on demand. In publishing digitally, we maintain all of the respected and admired features of the CVA, now enhanced with the rich flexibility of free online access. Paul Getty Museum ix PREFACE To Dimitris, my son This CVA fascicule presents a selection of Attic red-figure kraters from the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum. This volume contains the column- and volute-kraters, which range from 520 to 510 B.C. to the early fourth century B.C.; many are works of known potters and painters. Their presentation accords, in general, with the chronological sequence established by Sir John Beazley. The descriptions follow the format provided by the members of the American CVA Committee, and attributions made by other scholars are credited under the heading ATTRIBUTION AND DATE. These vases have come to the Museum from a variety of sources, mostly from the art market. A number were part of the collection of Walter and Molly Bareiss. The origin of the vases, along with their known histories, is provided under the heading PROUENANCE. The last version of the complete manuscript was delivered in late 2013. Since then, some new bibliographic references have appeared and are included in the entries. Additions to the bibliography were made until 2015, with a few more in 2016, 2017, and 2019. The Getty Museum’s coral-red volute-krater (84.AE.974) is not included in this volume. Ever since its acquisition in 1984, it has regularly been published as an exceptional instance of the use of coral-red on a large scale,1 but in 2013, Dyfri Williams and Jasper Gaunt contacted the Getty Museum with serious concerns about the vase’s authenticity. Their doubts were manifold, spanning the application and use of coral-red, the potting of the vessel, its overall decorative scheme and subsidiary ornament, and many aspects of style and iconography. Williams and Gaunt will discuss their concerns in a forthcoming study.2 Technical examinations are still being undertaken and will be published as soon as completed, but all parties have agreed that it is inappropriate to include the krater in this CVA. The preparation of this volume began years ago, when I was invited by Dr. Marion True, curator of antiquities at that time, to undertake this project. I would like to thank her for trusting me with the material and for all her support. I studied the vases during two short visits, the last in 2003. The members of the Museum’s Department of Antiquities, however, were always most helpful to me, and I thank them for that. Jens Daehner and Kenneth Lapatin assisted me in various ways during the earlier years of this project, while in recent years David Saunders has been of tremendous help and a great source of information; I am x very grateful to him for everything that he has done. Jeffrey Maish shared with me the results of his analysis of the coral-red krater (84.AE.974) and provided the measurements for many of the kraters in this volume.

    ��������������������������������� Creating the Past: Roman Villa Sculptures Hadrian’s pool reflects his wide travels, from Egypt to Greece and Rome. Roman architects recreated old scenes, but they blended various elements and styles to create new worlds with complex links to ideal worlds. Romans didn’t want to live in the past, but they wanted to live with it. Why “creating” rather than “recreating” the past? Most Roman sculpture was based on Greek originals 100 years or more in the past, but these Roman copies, in their use & setting, created a view of the past as the Romans saw it. In towns, such as Pompeii, houses were small, with little room for large gardens (the normal place for statues), so sculpture was under life-size and highlighted. The wall frescoes at Pompeii or Boscoreale (as in the reconstructed room at the Met) show us what the buildings and the associated sculptures looked like. Villas, on the other hand, were more expansive, generally sited by the water and had statues, life-size or larger, scattered around the gardens. Pliny’s villas, as he describes them in his letters, show multiple buildings, seemingly haphazardly distributed, connected by porticoes. Three specific villas give an idea of the types the Villa of the Papyri near Herculaneum (1st c. AD), Tiberius’ villa at Sperlonga from early 1st century (described also in CHSSJ April 1988 lecture by Henry Bender), and Hadrian’s villa at Tivoli (2nd cent AD). The Villa of Papyri, small and self-contained, is still underground, its main finds having been reached by tunneling; the not very scientific excavation left much dispute about find-spots and the villa had seen upheaval from the earthquake of 69 as well as the Vesuvius eruption of 79.

In Ancient Greece, an emphasis on camaraderie and communal reliance developed the concept of unit cohesion and specialization. Ultimately, Greece would become the birthplace of Western Military thought. The maturation of this mentality can be traced through the stylistic and technological progression of military helmets. Experimentations with helmet design illuminate the limitations and intricacies of warfare as it was developed in the ancient world. Though the development of any technology is nonlinear, studying the evolution of stylistic designs reveals how the unique style of combat in Greece changed war. The history of the Greek helmet began in the 17th century BCE, when the Mycenaean Empire controlled Greece. At the time, the Boar’s Tusk Helmet was popular throughout the region. This conically shaped helmet consisted of alternating levels of boars’ tusks in a style and design that may have originated in Western Europe (Snodgrass 19). The tusks were sewn into a felt or leather cap which served as the base of the helmet. In all reality, the boar’s tusks would have shattered after a single blow, but were an improvement over leather or even felt (Everson 10-11). Additionally, the laces holding the tusks in place would have been exposed and vulnerable, so leather strands were probably tied between the alternating tusks in order to protect the laces (Everson 7).

Arrive at the Corinth Canal for a brief stop and then continue on to the Acropolis of Corinth. Acro-corinth is the citadel of Corinth. It is situated to the southwest of the ancient city and rises to an elevation of 1883 ft. [574 m.]. Today it is surrounded by walls that are about 1.85 mi. [3 km.] long. The foundations of the fortifications are ancient—going back to the Hellenistic Period. The current walls were built and rebuilt by the Byzantines, Franks, Venetians, and Ottoman Turks. Climb up and visit the fortress. Then proceed to the Ancient city of Corinth. It was to this megalopolis where the apostle Paul came and worked, established a thriving church, subsequently sending two of his epistles now part of the New Testament. Here, we see all of the sites associated with his ministry: the Agora, the Temple of Apollo, the Roman Odeon, the Bema and Gallio’s Seat. The small local archaeological museum here is an absolute must! In Romans 16:23 Paul mentions his friend Erastus and • • we will see an inscription to him at the site.     The Religious Art of Sicily: 600 BC – 1200 AD A study day comprising three lectures by Gerald Deslandes 7 March 2018: 10.30 - 15.30 Perseus Slaying Medusa c 550 B.C. from Temple C at Selinunte Winchester Art History Group www.wahg.org.uk 1 Phoenician Libation Bowl, 8�� Century BC The traditional way of describing the early religious art of Sicily is to present it as a product of distinct political and religious cultures and as part of a wider narrative of conflict between east and west. It is true that there is evidence of a struggle between Greek and Phoenician influences from about 750 BC, which is mirrored in the rivalry of the Carthaginians and the Romans from 264 BC. After the fall of Rome in 476 the island came under the sway of the Byzantines in 728 AD and of the Arabs in 840 AD. The conversion of Byzantine churches to Islamic mosques that took place was then reversed during the Norman era from 1038 to 1194 AD. The difference was that instead of reverting to Byzantine authority, they came under the aegis of the Lateran tradition of the pope in Rome. For these reasons it is tempting to compare Count Roger’s seizure of Palermo in 1071 to the reconquest of Cordoba in 1080 or the launching of the first Crusade in 1095. Yet the political and religious identity of Europe that these struggles helped to define was still largely undetermined at the 2 end of the Norman era. In the ancient world the links between all four corners of the Mediterranean are evoked by Plato’s description of the great cultures of antiquity as grouped around it ‘like frogs around a pond’.
