Hardiman 2005 ABSTRACT This dissertation marks the first synthetic and contextual analysis of domestic sculpture for the whole of the Hellenistic period (323 BCE – 31 BCE). Prior to this study, Hellenistic domestic sculpture had been examined from a broadly literary perspective or had been the focus of smaller regional or site-specific studies. Rather than taking any one approach, this dissertation examines both the literary testimonia and the material record in order to develop as full a picture as possible for the location, function and meaning(s) of these pieces. The study begins with a reconsideration of the literary evidence. The testimonia deal chiefly with the residences of the Hellenistic kings and their conspicuous displays of wealth in the most public rooms in the home, namely courtyards and dining rooms. Following this, the material evidence from the Greek mainland and Asia Minor is considered. The general evidence supports the literary testimonia’s location for these sculptures. In addition, several individual examples offer insights into the sophistication of domestic decorative programs among the Greeks, something usually associated with the Romans. -

“How fast does a city recover from destruction? A new view of the creation of the Severe Style” On April 20th, Dr. Anja Slawisch, a research fellow at University of Cambridge, presented her careful reconsideration of the transition from Archaic period to Classical period in art, especially in sculpture. I will first give some historical background and conventional understanding of this transition, and then elaborate on her argument. Conventionally, the sack of Athens during the Persian War in 480 BCE spurred the artistic development from austere Archaic style (see statues of Kleobis and Biton below1) to the Severe Style (see Harmodius and Aristogeiton, the tyrannicides2), and hence marks the transition from Archaic period into Classical period in art. The most important feature that sets severe style apart from the Archaic is a more naturalistic depiction of the human anatomy. For statues of the tyrannicides, the human bodies were made as an organic system - their pelves shift according to their stances, as opposed to the awkward posture of Kleobis and Biton. In this widely-accepted narrative, the destruction of Athens, heavily influencing the psyche of Athenians, stimulated these stark changes and inventions in artistic style. As a consequence, 480 BCE became a reference point for archaeologists in dating these statues according to their features. Its construction began in 447 BC and was completed in 438 BC, although decorations of the Parthenon continued until 432 BC. It is the most important surviving building of Classical Greece, generally considered to be the culmination of the development of the Doric order. Its decorative sculptures are considered some of the high points of Greek art. The Parthenon is regarded as an Parthenon 2 enduring symbol of Ancient Greece and of Athenian democracy and one of the world's greatest cultural monuments. The Greek Ministry of Culture is currently carrying out a program of selective restoration and reconstruction to ensure the stability of the partially ruined structure.[3] The Parthenon itself replaced an older temple of Athena, which historians call the Pre-Parthenon or Older Parthenon, that was destroyed in the Persian invasion of 480 BC. Like most Greek temples, the Parthenon was used as a treasury. -

It is true that there is evidence of a struggle between Greek and Phoenician influences from about 750 BC, which is mirrored in the rivalry of the Carthaginians and the Romans from 264 BC. After the fall of Rome in 476 the island came under the sway of the Byzantines in 728 AD and of the Arabs in 840 AD. The conversion of Byzantine churches to Islamic mosques that took place was then reversed during the Norman era from 1038 to 1194 AD. The difference was that instead of reverting to Byzantine authority, they came under the aegis of the Lateran tradition of the pope in Rome. For these reasons it is tempting to compare Count Roger’s seizure of Palermo in 1071 to the reconquest of Cordoba in 1080 or the launching of the first Crusade in 1095. Yet the political and religious identity of Europe that these struggles helped to define was still largely undetermined at the 2 end of the Norman era. In the ancient world the links between all four corners of the Mediterranean are evoked by Plato’s description of the great cultures of antiquity as grouped around it ‘like frogs around a pond’. -

The first darkened room showcases five of Classical Greece’s best attempts to define the indefinable, all dramatically spotlit. Ilissos, the river god whose turbulent course has flowed from Athens to London and then, most recently, to St. Petersburg and back, has a beauty where flesh, drapery and water coalesce across his body. Apoxyomenos radiates a self-confidence in his muscular body. Doryphoros (via Georg Römer’s stunning bronze copy) finds beauty in mathematical perfection. The beauty of the Townley Diskobolos lies in the grace he achieves despite his clenched crouch. However, newspaper coverage of the exhibition has focused on the one female statue amidst the buff young males. The opening of the exhibition is Aphrodite’s bottom. The statue is turned 180 degrees from the angle at which she is normally first encountered on the way to the Duveen Gallery. It is easy to see why we start this way. -

Matthew Roller Volgei nescia: On the Paradox of Praising Women’s Invisibility* A funerary plaque of travertine marble, originally from a tomb on the Via Nomentana outside of Rome and dating to the middle of the first century BCE, commemorates the butcher Lucius Aurelius Hermia, freedman of Lucius, and his wife Aurelia Philematio, likewise a freedman of Lucius. The rectangular plaque is divided into three panels of roughly equal width. The center panel bears a relief sculpture depicting a man and woman who stand and face one another; the woman raises the man’s right hand to her mouth and kisses it. The leftmost panel, adjacent to the male figure, is inscribed with a metrical text of two elegiac couplets. It represents the husband Aurelius’ words about his wife, who has predeceased him and is commemorated here. The rightmost panel, adjacent to the female figure, is likewise inscribed with a metrical text of three and one half elegiac couplets. It represents the wife Aurelia’s words: she speaks of her life and virtues in the past tense, as though from beyond the grave.1 The figures depicted in relief presumably represent the married individuals who are named and speak in the inscribed texts; the woman’s hand-kissing gesture seems to confirm this, as it represents a visual pun on the cognomen Philematio/Philematium, “little kiss.”2 This relief, now in the British Museum, is well known and has received extensive scholarly discussion.3 Here, I wish to focus on a single phrase in the text Aurelia is represented as speaking. -

Corinthian order Valley of the Temples • The Valle dei Templi is an archaeological site in Agrigento (ancient Greek Akragas), Sicily, southern Italy. It is one of the most outstanding examples of Greater Greece art and architecture, and is one of the main attractions of Sicily as well as a national momument of Italy. The area was included in the UNESCO Heritage Site list in 1997. Much of the excavation and restoration of the temples was due to the efforts of archaeologist Domenico Antonio Lo Faso Pietrasanta (1783– 1863), who was the Duke of Serradifalco from 1809 through 1812. • The Valley includes remains of seven temples, all in Doric style. The temples are: • Temple of Juno, built in the 5th century BC and burnt in 406 BC by the Carthaginians. It was usually used for the celebration of weddings. • Temple of Concordia, whose name comes from a Latin inscription found nearby, and which was also built in the 5th century BC. Turned into a church in the 6th century AD, it is now one of the best preserved in the Valley. -

ATHENIAN EMPIRE 478 TO 404 B.C. FORMATION OF DELIAN LEAGUE TO FALL OF ATHENS ERA SUMMARY – ATHENIAN EMPIRE In the years following the Persian War, Athens was rebuilt and the Greek navy expanded its domination of the Aegean Sea. Further naval victories over Persia resulted in the freeing of several Ionian Greek colonies from the Persian yoke and the increased prestige of Greece as a sea power. Athenian control of the Greek navy was made possible the by creation of the Delian league, a group of Greek colonies located in the Aegean Sea united for defense. Although this league was nominally a confederation, it was dominated by Athens, and eventually became the foundation of the Athenian Empire. Athens became very wealthy due both to its domination of trade in the region and also to the inflow of tribute that had to be paid to Athens in return for protection from Persia. The most important statesmen in Athens in the years immediately after the Persian War, were Cimon, son of Miltiades, and Aristides. Both were involved in the organization of the Delian league and the rebuilding of Athens, including the construction of a fortified wall around the city to protect it from future invasions. Sparta opposed the building of walled cities, lest they fall into enemy hands, but the Athenians insisted and eventually a great wall was built from Athens to the sea, wide enough to drive two Chariots abreast. During the same period, great temples and state houses were built, funded mostly from the Delian league tributes, on a scale never before seen on the continent of Europe.
