  • A Methodology for Assessing Ground Borne Noise And
A Methodology for Assessing Ground Borne Noise and Vibration Transfer Functions “Tunnel wall-Soil surface” for Metropolitan Rail Networks using the TBM Muck Train as a linear source: Measurements Campaign in the extension of Athens Metro Line 3 towards Piraeus Vassiliki Zafiropoulou Dr. Researcher Laboratory of Transportation Environmental Acoustics (L.T.E.A.), Faculty of the Civil Engineering, University of Thessaly, Volos, Greece Konstantinos Vogiatzis Associate Professor, Laboratory of Transportation Environmental Acoustics (L.T.E.A.), Faculty of the Civil Engineering, University of Thessaly, Volos, Greece. Haralampos Mouzakis Assistant Professor, National Technical University of Athens, Greece. Summary Attiko Metro S.A., in view of the further development of the Athens Metro network, has fully initiated the new extension of 7.6 km, for line 3 “Haidari to Piraeus Dimotiko Theatre” towards “University of Piraeus” (forestation), connecting the major Piraeus Port with “Eleftherios Venizelos” International Airport. During the operation of this major urban subway rail transit system, vibrations are expected to be generated when transmitted through the soil and cause vibrations in nearby buildings. In urban areas, these vibrations are a consequence of the vehicle forces acting from the wheels onto the track in local defects. The transmission of ground-borne vibrations from subway rail transit systems in a building is mainly governed by the transfer function (TF) of vibration diffusion from the tunnel wall or invert towards the soil surface in the façade of the given protected building. Therefore at the early stages of a vibration assessment, it is necessary to complete a rigorous and detailed analysis in the basis of a detailed finite element calculation.

  • Demetrius Poliorcetes and the Hellenic League
DEMETRIUSPOLIORCETES AND THE HELLENIC LEAGUE (PLATE 33) 1. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND D JURING the six years, 307/6-302/1 B.C., issues were raised and settled which shaped the course of western history for a long time to come. The epoch was alike critical for Athens, Hellas, and the Macedonians. The Macedonians faced squarely during this period the decision whether their world was to be one world or an aggregate of separate kingdoms with conflicting interests, and ill-defined boundaries, preserved by a precarious balance of power and incapable of common action against uprisings of Greek and oriental subjects and the plundering appetites of surrounding barbarians. The champion of unity was King Antigonus the One- Eyed, and his chief lieutenant his brilliant but unstatesmanlike son, King Demetrius the Taker of Cities, a master of siege operations and of naval construction and tactics, more skilled in organizing the land-instruments of warfare than in using them on the battle field. The final campaign between the champions of Macedonian unity and disunity opened in 307 with the liberation of Athens by Demetrius and ended in 301 B.C. with the Battle of the Kings, when Antigonus died in a hail of javelins and Demetrius' cavalry failed to penetrate a corps of 500 Indian elephants in a vain effort to rescue hinm. Of his four adversaries King Lysimachus and King Kassander left no successors; the other two, Kings Ptolemy of Egypt and Seleucus of Syria, were more fortunate, and they and Demetrius' able son, Antigonus Gonatas, planted the three dynasties with whom the Romans dealt and whom they successively destroyed in wars spread over 44 years.

  • Revolt and Crisis in Greece
REVOLT AND CRISIS IN GREECE BETWEEN A PRESENT YET TO PASS AND A FUTURE STILL TO COME How does a revolt come about and what does it leave behind? What impact does it have on those who participate in it and those who simply watch it? Is the Greek revolt of December 2008 confined to the shores of the Mediterranean, or are there lessons we can bring to bear on social action around the globe? Revolt and Crisis in Greece: Between a Present Yet to Pass and a Future Still to Come is a collective attempt to grapple with these questions. A collaboration between anarchist publishing collectives Occupied London and AK Press, this timely new volume traces Greece’s long moment of transition from the revolt of 2008 to the economic crisis that followed. In its twenty chapters, authors from around the world—including those on the ground in Greece—analyse how December became possible, exploring its legacies and the position of the social antagonist movement in face of the economic crisis and the arrival of the International Monetary Fund. In the essays collected here, over two dozen writers offer historical analysis of the factors that gave birth to December and the potentialities it has opened up in face of the capitalist crisis. Yet the book also highlights the dilemmas the antagonist movement has been faced with since: the book is an open question and a call to the global antagonist movement, and its allies around the world, to radically rethink and redefine our tactics in a rapidly changing landscape where crises and potentialities are engaged in a fierce battle with an uncertain outcome.

  • The Hadrianic Aqueduct
Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Environmental Science and Technology Rhodes, Greece, 3-5 September 2015 THE HADRIANIC AQUEDUCT CHRISTAKI M.1, STOURNARAS G.1 and NASTOS P.2 1 National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Faculty of Geology and Geoenvironment, Department of Dynamic Tectonic Applied Geology, Panepistimiopolis Zografou, 15784, 2 National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Faculty of Geology and Geoenvironment, Department of Geography and Climatology, Panepistimiopolis Zografou, 15784 E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Since prehistoric times, the city of Athens and the wider region of Attica did not contain many natural water sources so aquatic reserves were never adequate to meet the needs of residents, as these changed through time. The construction of aqueducts was part of a more organized effort to address the water needs of the Attica basin area since prehistoric times. A key step in developing the city’s water infrastructure took place during the Roman occupation of Athens when the Hadrianic aqueduct and the Hadrianic reservoir were built. Construction began in 125 AD and was completed in 140 AD The Hadrianic was underground with natural flow requiring a small and continuous slope along the aqueduct. Wells, communicated through the aqueduct, were placed at regular intervals. The main branch of the aqueduct - the central part of the Hadrianic, consists of the main tunnel, approximately 20 Km which starts from the foot of Mount Parnitha in the Olympic Village and ends up in the reservoir of Lycabettus, exploiting the water sources of Parnitha, Penteli and the Kifissos River. Gravity collected water from the water sources in the main tunnel and there was also the contribution of smaller aqueducts along the route.
