New Fragmenti's of the Parthenon Acroteria
NEW FRAGMENTI'SOF THE PARTHENON ACROTERIA (PLATE 56) WOULD like to call attention to two new fragments of the floral acroteria of the Parthenon found recently in the storerooms of the Athens Acropolis Museum.' They are both palmette petals and join break-on-break to Acropolis Museum inv. no. 3442, a fragment from the right crowning half-palmette of Acroterion A (P1. 56: a, b, with new fragments in place).2 The new fragments are from the outermost petals of the crowning palmette and represent parts of these petals not preserved in the fragment of the corresponding left half-palmette of A, Acropolis Museum inv. no. 3446.3 The position of the outer petals is now known for the greater part of their length and their tips can be restored with increased surety. The larger of the new fragments shows clearly that the petal of which it is a part lies in a double curve, the lower part of the petal bending away from, the upper part toward the median line. This double curve, a characteristic of the so-called flame palmette, has been assumed in reconstructions of the Parthenon acroteria on the basis of later parallels; it is attested by the new fragments for the first time. 1 I am grateful to Dr. George Dontas, Ephor of the Acropolis, for permission to publish these fragments, and to Mrs. Maria Brouskari for generously facilitating my work in the museum. A Black-Figured Kylix from the Athenian Agora
A BLACK-FIGUREDKYLIX FROM THE ATHENIAN AGORA (PLATES 31 AND 32) I N THE spring of 1950 an ancientwell was discoveredin the area behindthe Stoa of Attalos, just east of the sixth shop from the south.' It was excavated to the bottom which was reached at a depth of 7.70 meters below the present surface of bedrock. The well was beautifully cut, round and true, in the soft green clayey bed- rock, and on two sides, the northwest and southwest, there was a series of fifteen footholds designed to help the workman who was digging the well in going down and coming up. No trace was found of the house that this well was designed to serve nor was the contemporary ground level preserved at any point near by. A pillaged foundation trench of classical Greek times passed over the mouth of the well except for the very northernmost segment, the broad deep footing trench for the back wall of the Stoa of Attalos passed about two meters to the west of the well, and a drain of the Roman period barely a meter to the east. The few remaining " islands " where bedrock stood to a higher level preserved no trace of ancient deposit. The fill in the upper meter or so of the well was loose bedrock without sherds. The next two meters produced scattered fragments of pottery of the first half of the sixth century B.C., one box full in all, among which we may note two black-figured frag- ments with animal friezes, rudely drawn, a fragmentary lid of a powder-box pyxis belonging to the Swan Group,2a fragment of a small late Corinthian skyphos with a zone of elongated animals, and several fragmentary unfigured kylixes, one of "komast " shape and two shaped like "Ionian" kylixes and having their off-set lips decorated inside with bands of thinned glaze.4 The next four and a half meters contained no sherds whatsoever, and the fill consisted sometimes of loose bedrock, occasionally of black mud. -

Shapiro HE AMAZONS offer a remarkable example of the lacunose and T fragmented state of ancient evidence for many Greek myths. For while we hear virtually nothing about them in extant litera ture before the mid-fifth century, they are depicted in art starting in the late eighth! and are extremely popular, especially in Attica, from the first half of the sixth. Thus all we know about the Greeks' con ception of the Amazons in the archaic period comes from visual rep resentations, not from written sources, and it would be hazardous to assume that various 'facts' and details supplied by later writers were familiar to the sixth-century Greek. The problem of locating the Amazons is a good case in point. Most scholars assume that Herakles' battle with the Amazons, so popular on Attic vases, took place at the Amazon city Themiskyra in Asia Minor, on the river Thermodon near the Black Sea, where most ancient writers place it.2 But the earliest of these is Apollodoros (2.5.9), and, as I shall argue, alternate traditions locating the Ama zons elsewhere may have been known to the archaic vase-painter and viewer. An encounter with Amazons figures among the exploits of three important Greek heroes, and each story entered the Attic vase painters' repertoire at a different time in the course of the sixth century. First came Herakles' battle to obtain the girdle of Hippolyte (although the prize itself is never shown), his ninth labor. -

BIJILDINGS ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE AG-ORA PLATES I-VITI INTRODUCTION' The region to the north of the Areopagus and to the east of Kolonos Agoraios had many natural advantages to recommend it as the site for thZecentral public place of the com- munity (Fig. 1). It was the most open and level area of any extent beneath the immediate shelter of the Acropolis. Along its southern edge a series of springs bubbled out from the foot of the Areopagus, so abundant as to have formed the principal source of drinking water in the city throughout antiquity. A gentle slope toward the north guaranteed adequate natural drainage, desirable for private habitation and essential for the construc- tion of large public buildings. The region lay, moreover, on the direct route between the Acropolis and the Dipylon, the principal gate of the city, and so was conveniently situated alike for residents and visitors. Actual habitation in the area can now be shown to extend at least well back into the second millennium B.C. Scattered fragments of household pottery of typical Middle Helladic types, Gray Minyan and Matt-painted wares, have appeared above bedrock along the north foot of the Areopagus, along the east slope and foot of Kolonos and even at the north foot of Kolonos. A simple shaft burial not later than this period was made near the mid point of the east foot of the latter hill 2 (Fig. 64, Section C-C). Practically no house- hold pottery of Late Helladic times has been found in the area so that there is no direct evidence for habitation in this period. -
Corinth, 1987: South of Temple E and East of the Theater
CORINTH, 1987: SOUTH OF TEMPLE E AND EAST OF THE THEATER (PLATES 33-44) ARCHAEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens were conductedin 1987 at Ancient Corinth south of Temple E and east of the Theater (Fig. 1). In both areas work was a continuationof the activitiesof 1986.1 AREA OF THE DECUMANUS SOUTH OF TEMPLE E ROMAN LEVELS (Fig. 1; Pls. 33-37:a) The area that now lies excavated south of Temple E is, at a maximum, 25 m. north-south by 13.25 m. east-west. The earliest architecturalfeature exposed in this set of trenches is a paved east-west road, identified in the 1986 excavation report as the Roman decumanus south of Temple E (P1. 33). This year more of that street has been uncovered, with a length of 13.25 m. of paving now cleared, along with a sidewalk on either side.
