Heritage, Landscape and Conflict Archaeology
THE EDGE OF EUROPE: HERITAGE, LANDSCAPE AND CONFLICT ARCHAEOLOGY by ROXANA-TALIDA ROMAN A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Classics, Ancient History and Archaeology School of History and Cultures College of Arts and Law University of Birmingham May 2019 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. ABSTRACT The research presented in this thesis addresses the significance of Romanian WWI sites as places of remembrance and heritage, by exploring the case of Maramureș against the standards of national and international heritage standards. The work provided the first ever survey of WWI sites on the Eastern Front, showing that the Prislop Pass conflictual landscape holds undeniable national and international heritage value both in terms of physical preservation and in terms of mapping on the memorial-historical record. The war sites demonstrate heritage and remembrance value by meeting heritage criteria on account of their preservation state, rarity, authenticity, research potential, the embedded war knowledge and their historical-memorial functions. The results of the research established that the war sites not only satisfy heritage legal requirements at various scales but are also endangered. -

East Prussia ‘14
Designer Notes: East Prussia ‘14 In the middle of August 1914, the world's attention was focused directly on the Western Front where German armies were sweeping into Belgium and France. On the Eastern Front however, the Russians were on the offensive into East Prussia, an important agricultural region of the Prussian homeland, and the gateway to Berlin. The Russians planned a two pronged invasion into East Prussia: one army approaching from the Niemen River to the east and one army approaching from the Narew River to the south, both aimed at outflanking German forces located therein, and the eventual capture of the strategic city of Königsberg. In their way stood a single German army, two resolute commanders, and a well developed rail network. By the time the campaign was over both Russian armies would be almost completely destroyed and thrown out of East Prussia and the campaign itself would go on to become one of the most studied and celebrated victories in warfare. Military Priests from the Gorj County in the Battles from Mărăşti, Mărăşeşti and Oituz
Annals of the „Constantin Brâncuși” University of Târgu Jiu, Letter and Social Science Series, 4/2017 MILITARY PRIESTS FROM THE GORJ COUNTY IN THE BATTLES FROM MĂRĂŞTI, MĂRĂŞEŞTI AND OITUZ Daniela-Liliana MANEA (PĂTRAŞCU) PhD Student, University of Craiova [email protected] ABSTRACT THE DECISIVE VICTORIES OF THE ROMANIAN ARMY FROM JULY – AUGUST 1917 STOPPED THE OFFENSIVE OF THE TRIPLE ALLIANCE FORCES ON THE SOUTH MOLDAVIA FRONT AND ENABLED THE PRESERVATION OF ROMANIAN NATIONAL STATE. AS PART OF THE MILITARY UNITS THAT PARTICIPATED, IN THE SUMMER OF 1917, TO THE HEROIC BATTLES OF MĂRĂŞTI, MĂRĂŞEŞTI AND OITUZ THERE WERE THE GORJ COUNTY PRIESTS: CONSTANTIN DĂNĂU, SERVING AS DEACON FOR THE IIND ROMANIAN ARMY PRIEST, VASILE CERNĂIANU, AS PRIEST OF THE 18TH INFANTRY REGIMENT, DUMITRU MURĂREŢU, AS PRIEST OF THE 7TH RANGER REGIMENT, AND VICTOR DOBRESCU, AS PRIEST OF THE 1ST ARTILLERY BRIGADE. THE MILITARY PRIESTS FROM THE GORJ COUNTY HAD AN IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTION IN SUPPORTING THE MORALE OF THE ROMANIAN TROOPS IN THE SPRING AND SUMMER OF THE 1917, WHEN THE ROMANIAN ARMY WAS REBUILT AFTER THE MILITARY 1916 MILITARY CAMPAING, THAT ENDED WITH THE CENTRAL POWER’S OCCUPATION OF MOST OF THE COUNTRY, EXCEPTING MOLDOVA. IN THIS CONTEXT, IT’S VERY RELEVANT THAT THE PRIEST CONSTANTIN DĂNĂU, ORIGINATED FROM THE GORJ COUNTY, WAS DEACON OF THE SECOND ROMANIAN ARMY AND, AFTER HIS PARTICIPATION IN THE MĂRĂŞTI BATTLE, HE BECAME THE SECOND SECRETARY OF THE ROMANIAN ARMY RELIGIOUS SERVICE. SUBSTITUTE TEACHER AT "TUDOR VLADIMIRESCU" HIGHSCHOOL FROM TÂRGU-JIU, UNTIL THE SUMMER OF 1916, THE PRIEST CONSTANTIN DĂNĂU ATTENDED THE SORBONNE UNIVERSITY FROM PARIS AFTER THE END OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR. -

Falkenhayn's Campaign in Romania, 1916 [M.A
2005.05.01 Germany's Decisive Victory: Falkenhayn's Campaign in Romania, 1916 [M.A. Thesis: Eastern Michigan University, 2004]. Jacob Lee Hamric, The University of Tennessee ([email protected]) CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Romania declared war on the Central Powers on August 27, 1916. The news shocked the German High Command, particularly General Erich von Falkenhayn, chief of the General Staff. He had predicted that if Romania did enter the war, it would only do so after the September harvest. Most German officers agreed. However, the team directing the armies in the east, Field Marshall Paul von Hindenburg and General Erich Ludendorff, had for two years been fighting Falkenhayn’s emphasis on the western front and also privately ex- pressing their displeasure with Falkenhayn to German Kaiser Wilhelm II. Wilhelm liked Falkenhayn personally and was himself surprised by Romania’s belligerence. However, he now believed the army was losing faith in its commander, and thus agreed to Hindenburg’s and Ludendorff’s demands for Falkenhayn’s dismissal. Wilhelm appointed Hindenburg as Supreme Commander of the German High Command, with Ludendorff as his Chief of Staff.1 Falkenhayn accepted a command post as chief of the General Staff on the Romanian front. Once the German High Command recovered from its surprise, the army responded extremely well on the new Romanian front. Although Romania’s offensive into Transylva- nia had initial success, it quickly stalled as Romanian military leaders became increasingly worried about Bulgarian forces on their southern front. This “operational pause” gave Fal- kenhayn plenty of time to rush in German reinforcements and consolidate the Central Powers’ position in Transylvania.
