Je ne dirais qu’un mot des erreurs de forme, bien trop nombreuses hélas, mais qu’il reste toujours possible d’éliminer. J’ai répertorié ici celles que j’ai relevées au hasard des lectures. En revanche, les corrections de fond s’avèrent un mal rédhibitoire. La mise à jour de nouveaux documents (et on verra que plusieurs inscriptions importantes doivent être ajoutées au dossier), la prise en compte de publications qui m’avaient échappées ou simplement une réflexion différente rendront toujours l’œuvre mouvante et inachevée. Il m’a semblé que pour garder au livre son caractère d’actualité il fallait impérativement tenir à jour des addenda. Une publication traditionnelle aurait pour conséquence que ces addenda seraient eux-mêmes rapidement rendus insuffisants voire obsolètes dans un temps très court, à peine publiés sans doute2. (ii) In his discussion of Agamemnon's speech in Iliad 3.456-60 Eustathius follows the discussion in Plutarch Quaestiones convivales 9.13, rather than that in the scholia. It is shown that this is justified on technical grounds. The interpretation in the scholia does not fit Agamemnon's speech, and must have originated in a discussion of the attested Homeric 'problem' concerning claims that the Trojans had broken their oath. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2014. Pp. xiii + 344. Hardcover, £74.99. ISBN 978-1-107-02090-0. acitus’ Dialogus de Oratoribus has long resisted easy interpretation. This fictionalized account of a discussion in 75 CE about eloquentia and the Tdecline of oratory under the Empire is full of surprises, cruxes, and inconsistencies. Christopher van den Berg, in the first monograph in English committed solely to this work, offers a way out—or, rather, through—the many interpretive challenges of this work. He argues that we must read the dialogue in a synthetic way, attentive to how characters’ seemingly opposed viewpoints in many ways inform and complement one another, with Tacitus acting as ‘the curator of many voices rather than the sponsor of one’ (294). Recent readers of the Dialogus have been attuned to its ‘polyphonous’ charac- teristics, that is, how Tacitus places valid points into the speeches of all of the dialogue’s interlocutors, the orator-turned-poet Curiatius Maternus, the modernist Marcus Aper, and the antiquarian Vipstanus Messalla.1 This book breaks new ground by reading such ‘community of thought’ (165) across the work, with great nuance and sensitivity to the text. From this holistic manner of reading the work, V. reaches the heterodox conclusion that the Dialogus as a whole does not, in fact, argue for the decline of eloquentia or oratorical skill. This paper draws attention to the word battle between Ulysses and Andromache in the Troades (vv. 522–814), where the protagonists appear to quarrel over the fate of little Astyanax, son of Andromache and Hector and potential avenger of Troy. The true matter of the rhetorically organised dispute, however, is rhetoric itself. Ulysses presents himself as a shrewd and ruthless advocate in a lawsuit, trying to reveal the boy’s true whereabouts, in order to kill him. He accuses Andromache, who tries to save her child, of rhetorical tricks, grandiloquence and obstinacy. By embellishing his criticism with myth and poetry, Seneca has found a way to accuse contemporary rhetoric of political ineffectiveness, forensic uselessness, and moral turpitude. The literature of the 1st century AD knew various interpretations concerned with the circumstances that caused the decline of contemporary rhetoric.1 The elder Seneca, who was the first to advance arguments on the topic, saw the rhetoric of his age in decline for three main reasons. To him, the decline began soon after Cicero’s time and was due either to the decadent lifestyle of his contemporaries, to the fading prospects of honour, or to the persistent and natural change of greatness and depravity.2 1 Literature on the topic is abundant: HELDMANN (1982) dedicates a detailed study on the subject; good overviews are given by CAPLAN (1944), FANTHAM (1978), WILLIAMS (1978: 6–51), KENNEDY (1972: 446–464), FAIRWEATHER (1981: 132– 148) and KENNEDY (1994: 159–200, esp. -
Introduction
INTRODUCTION Livy the Historian Livy , or in full Titus Livius, was born at Patavium in northern Italy (Padua today) in 59 bc, and so lived through the turbulent years of the fall of the Roman Republic into the calm and politically controlled era of one-man rule under Augustus and his successor Tiberius. 1 According to St Jerome’s Chronicle he died in ad 17. He seems not to have held public offi ce or done any military service. Apart from some essays, now lost, on philosophy and rhetoric, he undertook in his late twenties to compose an up-to-date history of Rome drawing on mostly Roman but also some Greek predecessors. He entitled it From the Foundation of the City ( Ab Urbe Condita ): to all Romans their City was unique. The history eventually amounted to 142 books, taking Rome’s history from its traditional foundation-date of 753 bc down to the year 9 bc — a colossal achievement, much lengthier than Gibbon’s Decline and Fall , for instance. Of it only the fi rst ten Books and then Books 21–45 survive. Books 6–10 take the story of Rome from 390 bc down to the year 293. Evidence in the work indicates that Livy began writing in the early 20s bc, for around 18 bc he reached Book 28. A subheading to a surviving résumé (epitome) of the lost book 121 states that it was published after Augustus’ death in ad 14: some- thing that probably held true, too, for those that followed. In this account Cordus is given a speech with which he defends a historian’s right to praise the enemies of the emperor. The majority of modern scholars have interpreted Tacitus’ account as unqualified praise for Cordus, and many have suggested that readers are to understand Cordus as a surrogate for Tacitus’ own views on the rights and duties of historians. In this project I attempt to challenge that consensus. I argue that Cordus and Tacitus disagree in their historiographical, political, and even moral principles, and that Tacitus’ account of Cordus’ trial and death contains criticism of the historian, even while acknowledging his courage. This reading complicates Tacitus’ relationship to Cordus and to several other characters in the Annals who, though they die deaths of great renown, effect little change. -

Jones Chair of Supervisory Commitee: Professor Alain Gowing Department of Classics This study is about the construction of identity and self-promotion of status by means of elite education during the first and second centuries CE, a cultural and historical period termed by many as the Second Sophistic. Though the Second Sophistic has traditionally been treated as a Greek cultural movement, individual Romans also viewed engagement with a past, Greek or otherwise, as a way of displaying education and authority, and, thereby, of promoting status. Readings of the work of Quintilian, Tacitus and Pliny, first- and second-century Latin prose authors, reveal a remarkable engagement with the methodologies and motivations employed by their Greek contemporaries—Dio of Prusa, Plutarch, Lucian and Philostratus, most particularly. The first two chapters of this study illustrate and explain the centrality of Greek in the Roman educational system. The final three chapters focus on Roman displays of that acquired Greek paideia in language, literature and oratory, respectively. As these chapters demonstrate, the social practices of paideia and their deployment were a multi-cultural phenomenon. SUMMA ABSOLUTAQUE NATURAE RERUM CONTEMPLATIO: A CLOSE STUDY OF PLINY THE ELDER’S NATURALIS HISTORIA 37 by EMILY CLAIRE BROWN B.A., The University of British Columbia, 2010 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Classics) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) December 2012 © Emily Claire Brown, 2012 ABSTRACT The focus of modern scholarship on Pliny the Elder’s Naturalis Historia tends towards two primary goals: the placement of the work and the author within the cultural context of late 1st century CE Rome and, secondly, the acknowledgement of the purposeful and designed nature of Pliny’s text. Following this trend, the purpose of this study is to approach Book 37, in which Pliny lists and categorizes the gems of the world, as a deliberately structure text that is informed by its cultural context. The methodology for this project involved careful readings of the book, with special attention paid to the patterns hidden under the surface of Pliny’s occasionally convoluted prose; particular interest was paid to structural patterns and linguistic choices that reveal hierarchies. Of particular concern were several areas that appealed to the most prominent areas of concern in the book: the structure and form of the book; the colour terminology by which Pliny himself categorizes the gems; the identification of gems as objects of mirabilia and luxuria; and the identification of gems as objects of magia and medicina. These topics are all iterations of the basic question of whether gems represent to Pliny positive growth on the part of the Roman Empire, or detrimental decline.
