Wö- chentlich wies das «Observatorium der europäischen Gegenwartsliteratur» online auf Trends und Diskus- sionen in der europäischen Literatur hin. Beglei- tet wurde es von zahlreichen Veranstaltungen in Deutschland, Frankreich, Großbritannien, Österreich, Slowenien und Ungarn – mit dem Jahreshöhepunkt: den Europäischen Literaturtagen vom 3. bis 6. No- vember 2016 in Spitz an der Donau. Erweitert wurde dieses Jahresprogramm mit einer Reihe von Filmen, Gesprächen, Diskussionen und Lesungen von internationalen AutorInnen, die das EliT-Programm für ein breites Publikum zugänglich machten. Diese Veranstaltungen sind neuerdings auf okto.tv auf Englisch und Deutsch als Literatur- Fernsehsendungen aufbereitet und über die Webseite von www.literaturhauseuropa.eu abrufbar. Der vorliegende zweite Band von «Trends in der europäischen Gegenwartsliteratur» enthält Texte des Observatoriums von Januar bis Dezember 2016 zu einer Fülle von Themen: – Die Kolonisten – Im Wettstreit der Kolonialmäch- te um die Weltherrschaft seit dem 19. Jahrhundert prägen bis heute auch reisende SchriftstellerInnen das Bild der außereuropäischen Kulturen mit. Welche Bilder vermitteln sie von und in unserer globalisierten Welt? – Europa – Europa durchläuft momentan eine schwie- rige Phase seiner einst glorreichen Geschichte. Der Kontinent droht wieder in nationalistische Populis- men zu zerfallen. Wie äußern sich SchriftstellerInnen VORWORT zu dieser aktuellen gesellschaftlichen Situation? Ist es Zeit, Europa neu zu denken? DIE KOLONISTEN Wie sieht ein afrikanisches Land im Roman eines Europäers aus, und wie in einem Roman eines Autors aus Afrika? Und wie Indien im Roman eines Europäers, und wie in einem Roman eines Autors aus Indien? In seinem bei den Europäischen Literaturtagen 2015 vorge- stellten Roman Pest & Cholera weist der französische Autor Patrick Deville auf eine Dynamik des europäischen Kolonialis- mus seit dem 19. Jahrhundert hin, die auch SchriftstellerIn- nen und die Literatur betrifft. Im Bestreben, die ganze Welt zu ‹europäisieren›, brechen im Namen des Fortschritts Ent- deckungsreisende, ForscherInnen und WissenschaftlerInnen, ReiseschriftstellerInnen und AbenteurerInnen in vermeintlich unbekanntes Territorium auf, schreiben über die für sie frem- den Kulturen, und setzen damit den Prozess der Kolonisierung in Gang. Ihnen folgen die Militärs und Handelsherren, die das Land erobern, ‹europäisieren› und am Ende sehr oft ins Chaos treiben. Im Wettstreit der Kolonialmächte um die Weltherrschaft von 1860 bis heute prägen auch die reisenden SchriftstellerInnen das Bild der außereuropäischen Kulturen mit. Von Joseph Conrad, Andre Malraux bis Hubert Fichte und Bruce Chatwin lässt sich sagen, dass sie jeweils die Literatur ihrer Herkunftsländer bereichert und erweitert, aber ebenso das Bild der Kulturen, über die sie geschrieben haben, beeinflusst haben. Wie ist das heutzutage mit Schriftstelle- rInnen in unserer globalisierten Welt? Wie kann man ihre verschiedenen Zugänge zum besseren Verständnis der Welt nutzen? Der Auftrag für den Hauptvortrag der Europäischen Litera- turtage 2016 erging an den deutschen Autor Hans Christoph Buch. 13 ERINNERUNGEN AN DIE UNTERENTWICKLUNG Von Hans Christoph Buch 1 An Ostern 1968 besuchte ich zum ersten Mal Haiti,das häufig mit Tahiti verwechselt wird, manchmal sogar mit Hawaii. «Wie viel müssen wir Ihnen bezahlen, damit Sie endlich aufhören, über Tahiti zu schreiben», sagte der Verleger Siegfried Unseld einmal zu mir: «Oder handelt es sich um Hawaii?» Die Antwort auf diese Fragen gibt mein Roman Die Hochzeit von Port -au -Prince, den Unseld 1984 herausbrachte. Der folgende Text stammt aus diesem Buch, aber er ist älteren Datums und stand Ende 1897 im Satireblatt Kladderadatsch, als Wilhelm II. Kriegsschiffe entsandte, um Haiti die Hosen stramm zu ziehen, wie es hieß: «Mensch, nutze die Gelegenheit Und präge dir in dieser

The present article discusses humorous content in German press, television, and Internet coverage from recent years, which has reinforced a negative image of Poland and Poles in German minds. In the introductory part, the attention is focused on presenting the essence and functions of humor in the light of contem- porary humor research, with a special emphasis placed on the interdependencies between humor, language, and discourse on the one hand, and ethnic cultures on the other, which differ in terms of preferred norms and values.     ISSN 1649-8526 Volume 2007 · Issue 2 http://scenario.ucc.ie No Laughing Matter?A Short History of German Comedy Chris Ritchie, James Harris Abstract This article is the first stage of research for the book “No Laughing Mat- ter: A Short History of German Comedy’ by Chris Ritchie and James Harris which will look at some key moments in German comedy, repres- entations of Germans in English language comedy and ’and also take a look at the current Berlin comedy scene. It begins with an example of how the British, or particularly the English, represent the ‘comedy Ger- man’, and is followed by an overview of some key moments in the history of German comedy, in particular the work of Hans Sachs and the develop- ment of 20th century cabaret. The second section then looks at how the Germans view English comedy through an analysis of the sketch Dinner for One and Monty Python’s German-language episode. 1 Preface “Don’t mention the war.” (The Germans, Fawlty Towers, Series 1 #6) The Germans have no sense of humour. This is the orthodoxy of the English mindset; expressed bluntly as that or as a recent German perspective more eloquently had it, “(to the British) the Krauts are a humorless people, who vacillate between grumbling seriousness and sentimental romanticism and are unable to distance themselves from the seriousness of life”1. Despite these suggestions, humour remains an essential part of human culture, a by-product of both language and social interaction and in Western Europe it is highly dubious to assert that any culture lacks comic objects, linguistic humour or comedy taboo.

Comedy is a staple of German culture, with many Germans making light of situations in social conversation, and with a large amount of time allotted to comedy in German television broadcasting. Germans distinguish between "Comedy" (using the English word) and "Komödie" (the German word of the same origin). "Comedy" refers to post-1990s TV-comedy, which is characterized by comedic entertainment in the form of stand-up comedy, stage shows, modern satire, cabaret and adaptations of foreign comedy concepts, including airing of foreign shows. "Komödie" refers to films and plays. -German humour, Wikipedia- The film series this semester focuses on German (and Austrian) comedy from the 1990’s and 2000’s. The last thing in which the cultivated man can have community with the vulgar is their jocularity; and we can hardly exhibit more strikingly the wide gulf which separates him from them, than by comparing the object which shakes the diaphragm of a coal-heaver with the highly complex pleasure derived from a real witticism. That any high order of wit is exceedingly complex, and demands a ripe and strong mental development, has one evidence in the fact that we do not find it in boys at all in proportion to their manifestation of other powers. Clever boys generally aspire to the heroic and poetic rather than the comic, and the crudest of all their efforts are their jokes. Many a witty man will remember how in his school days a practical joke, more or less Rabelaisian, was for him the ne plus ultra of the ludicrous. It seems to have been the same with the boyhood of the [human race.]4 [The history and literature of the ancient Hebrews gives the idea of a people who went about their business and their pleasure as gravely as a society of beavers; the smile and the laugh are often mentioned metaphorically, but the smile is one of complacency, the laugh is one of scorn. Nor can we imagine that the facetious element was very strong in the Egyptians; no laughter lurks in the wondering eyes and the broad calm lips of their statues.
