Germanic Department Film Series The fall 2014 Germanic Department Film series Die etwas neuere deutsche Komödie The somewhat more recent German comedy A cut through movies one might have watched growing up in a reunified Germany Tuesday, 6 pm, BUR 214 Please address questions to Matthias Fingerhuth, [email protected] About the series German humour refers collectively to the conventions of comedy and its cultural meaning within the country of Germany. Comedy is a staple of German culture, with many Germans making light of situations in social conversation, and with a large amount of time allotted to comedy in German television broadcasting. Germans distinguish between "Comedy" (using the English word) and "Komödie" (the German word of the same origin). "Comedy" refers to post-1990s TV-comedy, which is characterized by comedic entertainment in the form of stand-up comedy, stage shows, modern satire, cabaret and adaptations of foreign comedy concepts, including airing of foreign shows. "Komödie" refers to films and plays. -German humour, Wikipedia- The film series this semester focuses on German (and Austrian) comedy from the 1990’s and 2000’s. The selection is eclectic and covers putative cult movies as well as fameless insiders’ tips. Kalle hwill spend two more years in jail, so Keek is not exactly bothered by the fact that he has lost most of the money betting on horse races. But then Kalle watches a porn video 'starring' his girlfriend and he breaks free to take revenge. Suddenly, Keek is in desperate need of cash and even the weirdest scheme seems promising. September 16th 2014, 6pm, BUR 214 Der Schuh des Manitu (Manitou’s Shoe) 2001, English subtitles Abahachi, Chief of the Apache Indians, and his blood brother Ranger maintain peace and justice in the Wild West. One day, Abahachi needs to take up a credit from the Shoshone Indians to finance his tribe's new saloon. Unfortunately Santa Maria, who sold the saloon, betrays Abahachi, takes the money and leaves. Soon, the Shoshones are on the warpath to get their money back, and Abahachi is forced to get it quickly. Luckily, he, his twin brother Winnetouch, beautiful dancer Uschi and the Greek Dimitri each own a quarter of a treasure map that leads them to 'the shoe of Manitu'. There, Santa Maria already awaits them to take their new treasure away as well. September 23th 2014, 6pm, BUR 214 Papa ante portas 1991, English subtitles After ordering enough typewriting paper for 40 years, just to get discount, Heinrich Lohse is forced to retire. The former manager has plenty of time now to spend with his wife and their 16 year old son. But - do they want that? September 30th 2014, 6pm, BUR 214 Herr Lehmann (Mister Lehmann) 2003, English subtitles In October 1989, the part of the West Berlin borough of Kreuzberg called SO 36, had been largely shut off by the Wall from the rest of the city for 28 years. A lethargic sub-culture of students, artists, bohemians and barflys had flourished among crumbling buildings. Part of that microcosm is barkeeper Frank, semi- formally called 'Herr Lehmann' by friends and patrons. He hangs out drinking, sports utter disregard for anything beyond SO 36 and lazily pursues an affair with cook Katrin. His lifestyle is gradually disturbed, when his parents show up for a visit, things go awry with Katrin and his best friend Karl starts to act strange. Meanwhile, political turmoil mounts on the other side of the Wall. October 14th 2014, 6pm, BUR 214 Lammbock 2001, English subtitles German louts Stefan and Kai run a pizzeria, but it's mainly a front for their more lucrative self-grown cannabis trade, allowing them to deliver at home. When the plants get sick, the dealers bring in pest control expert Achim, but that changes everything. October 21st 2014, 6pm, BUR 214 Immer nie am Meer (Forever Never Anywhere) 2007, English subtitles Trapped in their car following a hillside auto accident, three men become better acquainted than any of them ever imagined or wanted in director Antonin Svoboda's lighthearted comedy. Two men on their way to a wine store notice a handicapped comedian with an accordion stranded on the side of the street. It seems that the comedian had been attempting to chat up a passing female jogger when his car broke down, and while he doesn't know the generous pair who picked him up, he is thankful for the ride all the same. When the jogging beauty darts out in front of their car and the driver swerves to avoid her, the three men are sent careening down a wooded hillside and their car becomes ensnared in the brush. Now unable to unlock their doors or open their windows, the three men sit stuck in their car like rats in a cage. In order to pass the time until they are rescued, the men begin to engage each other in conversation, but who's to say what topics are fair game for discussion and what subjects are better left to silence? October 28th 2014, 6pm, BUR 214 Goodbye Lenin 2003, English subtitles East Germany, the year 1989: A young man protests against the regime. His mother watches the police arresting him and suffers a heart attack and falls into a coma. Some months later, the GDR does not exist anymore and the mother awakes. Since she has to avoid every excitement, the son tries to set up the GDR again for her in their flat. But the world has changed a lot. November 4th 2014, 6pm, BUR 214 Operation Dance Sensation 2003, English subtitles After escaping from the terror of Vietnam, Jackson works as a headhunter. His old enemies from Vietnam open up a disco close to the American-Iraqi border. They try to sell dangerous weapons to the Iraqi government. Jackson is the only one who can stop them. Besides, he must care for his daughter, 5 year old Meike. On her birthday party daughter, the situation gets out of control... and there is still a dance competition to be held. November 11th 2014, 6pm, BUR 214 Erkan & Stefan 2000, German subtitles Editor Eckernförde has come into the possession of an audiocassette that contains a recording of the last minutes of deceased politician Uwe Barschel. The circumstances of his untimely death have never been completely resolved - until now. Unfortunately, the editor's daughter Nina accidentally takes the tape with her to Munich, where she is about to visit her paralyzed Mom in a sanatorium. When this information reaches the CIA and the BND, both organizations compete to get hold of the tape. Meanwhile Erkan & Stefan, two loveable wannabe supercheckers from Munich, are assigned as bodyguards for Nina - of course, they are expected to mess up their job, so that the tape can be retrieved. But the two friends prove to be a bit more streetwise than CIA or BND ever expected. November 18th 2014, 6pm, BUR 214 Werner Beinhart (Werner bare-knuckle) 1990, uncertain subtitles Werner is a cult-hero among young Germans; he is the opposite of the dutiful, work-oriented model usually promulgated to them. Instead, he roars swiftly through the city on his highly customized motorcycle, cleverly outwitting the traffic policemen whose paths he crosses, while he picks up yet another in an endless series of cases of beer. He has no visible means of support, is as articulate as a stone, and seems to spend his days in a perpetual party. This Animal House-like comedy combines live action and animation December 2nd 2014, 6pm, BUR Superstau (Superjam) 1991, no subtitles Every year a lot of German people prepare to spend their holidays in the sunny south. And all of them have to use the same motor ways. And every year all comes to an end in a big jam..

The present article discusses humorous content in German press, television, and Internet coverage from recent years, which has reinforced a negative image of Poland and Poles in German minds. In the introductory part, the attention is focused on presenting the essence and functions of humor in the light of contem- porary humor research, with a special emphasis placed on the interdependencies between humor, language, and discourse on the one hand, and ethnic cultures on the other, which differ in terms of preferred norms and values.     ISSN 1649-8526 Volume 2007 · Issue 2 http://scenario.ucc.ie No Laughing Matter?A Short History of German Comedy Chris Ritchie, James Harris Abstract This article is the first stage of research for the book “No Laughing Mat- ter: A Short History of German Comedy’ by Chris Ritchie and James Harris which will look at some key moments in German comedy, repres- entations of Germans in English language comedy and ’and also take a look at the current Berlin comedy scene. It begins with an example of how the British, or particularly the English, represent the ‘comedy Ger- man’, and is followed by an overview of some key moments in the history of German comedy, in particular the work of Hans Sachs and the develop- ment of 20th century cabaret. The second section then looks at how the Germans view English comedy through an analysis of the sketch Dinner for One and Monty Python’s German-language episode. 1 Preface “Don’t mention the war.” (The Germans, Fawlty Towers, Series 1 #6) The Germans have no sense of humour. This is the orthodoxy of the English mindset; expressed bluntly as that or as a recent German perspective more eloquently had it, “(to the British) the Krauts are a humorless people, who vacillate between grumbling seriousness and sentimental romanticism and are unable to distance themselves from the seriousness of life”1. Despite these suggestions, humour remains an essential part of human culture, a by-product of both language and social interaction and in Western Europe it is highly dubious to assert that any culture lacks comic objects, linguistic humour or comedy taboo.

The last thing in which the cultivated man can have community with the vulgar is their jocularity; and we can hardly exhibit more strikingly the wide gulf which separates him from them, than by comparing the object which shakes the diaphragm of a coal-heaver with the highly complex pleasure derived from a real witticism. That any high order of wit is exceedingly complex, and demands a ripe and strong mental development, has one evidence in the fact that we do not find it in boys at all in proportion to their manifestation of other powers. Clever boys generally aspire to the heroic and poetic rather than the comic, and the crudest of all their efforts are their jokes. Many a witty man will remember how in his school days a practical joke, more or less Rabelaisian, was for him the ne plus ultra of the ludicrous. It seems to have been the same with the boyhood of the [human race.]4 [The history and literature of the ancient Hebrews gives the idea of a people who went about their business and their pleasure as gravely as a society of beavers; the smile and the laugh are often mentioned metaphorically, but the smile is one of complacency, the laugh is one of scorn. Nor can we imagine that the facetious element was very strong in the Egyptians; no laughter lurks in the wondering eyes and the broad calm lips of their statues.

Today, the websites of GDR nostalgics still display lovingly cultivated collections of this extinct variant of German humour. A curious visitor to such websites would cer- tainly find one of the best-known GDR jokes, typically cast as a rhetorical question: 'Question: the Russians used to be our "friends", after that our "brothers and sisters". Why? Answer: you can't choose your brothers and sisters.' This fictitious dialogue brings us directly to the subject of this essay.
