Then 18, and went direct to Detroit, Mich., where he the officer of the workhouse came up to me and said; delivered the following address on May 22: “young man, let me tell you something: we only speak I suppose you have heard the story about the one language here, and damn little at that.” Under such little boy who was asked one day by his mother circumstances you will understand that I am somewhat whether he had said his morning prayer, and little out of practice: in fact, I have almost forgotten how to Johnny replied that he had, and then asked: “Mother, talk at all. And, therefore, I am not going to make a why is it my prayer is so long? Mary is such a big girl, so•called speech to you tonight, but I just want to talk and she has only got a little prayer”. His mother said, to you a little. “why, Johnny, how’s that?” and then the little boy told First of all, I want to tell you how glad I am to her that when Mary was called in the morning she be again in your midst. And you, my friends, are prayed like this: “Oh, Lord. I hate to get up.” That’s evidently pleased to see me, but, great as your pleasure how I felt when my name was called.

  • Desperate Identities: a Bio-Psycho-Social Analysis of Perpetrators of Mass Violence
DOI: 10.1111/1745-9133.12468 SPECIAL ISSUE ARTICLE COUNTERING MASS VIOLENCE IN THE UNITED STATES Desperate identities A bio-psycho-social analysis of perpetrators of mass violence Peter Langman Langman Psychological Associates, LLC Research Summary: In this article, I provide a qualitative Correspondence analysis of ten perpetrators of mass violence, including five Peter Langman, 825 North Cedar Crest Blvd. school shooters and five attackers in nonschool settings Allentown, PA 18104. (a random public shooting, a familicide, and three attacks Email: [email protected] by White supremacist homegrown violent extremists). The killers are discussed in terms of body-related issues, three psychological categories (psychopathic, psychotic, and traumatized), and social failures. I describe how the attackers sought to overcome their perceived inadequacy, framed as damaged masculinity, through acts of violence. I also demonstrate the many factors that contribute to acts of mass violence. Policy Implications: Violence prevention can be sup- ported by policy initiatives in multiple domains, including mandating the use of threat assessment in educational settings, government support for expanding the use of threat assessment across the nation, training professionals engaged in threat assessment in the broad factors that con- tribute to mass violence, educating the public about mental health issues, destigmatizing the use of mental health services, increasing access to mental health treatment, and improving child protective services. When it comes to mass murder, the question becomes most urgent.

  • The Modern Relationship Between Hollywood and Christian
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Marketing Miracles: The Modern Relationship between Hollywood and Christian Filmmaking A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Film & Television by Benjamin Nelson Sampson 2016 © Copyright by Benjamin Nelson Sampson 2016 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Marketing Miracles: The Modern Relationship between Hollywood and Christian Filmmaking by Benjamin Nelson Sampson Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television University of California, Los Angeles, 2016 Professor Denise R. Mann, Chair This dissertation examines the relationship between Hollywood and American Christianity from 1998 to the present—a time frame that encompasses the recent rise of the “Christian blockbusters.” This period saw unprecedented interaction between Hollywood and what has been called the “Christian film industry,” or “Holywood”—a loose and ever-changing assortment of Christian film companies and independent filmmakers that have operated in one form or another since the silent era and whose productions were, until recently, primarily relegated to local theatrical markets, church screenings, and Christian television. Although historically unprecedented, this new interaction between Hollywood and “Holywood” can be understood as a clear extension of the rise of both new media technology and transmedia industries. This ii dissertation argues that a once not-for-profit filmmaking exercise by Christian filmmakers, for the purposes of inner-church ministry, has now become a huge business built upon selling films to churches as resources for both inner-church ministry and outer-church evangelism. Indeed, the business has grown so profitable that Hollywood studios now regularly market their mainstream wares to Christian audiences as well, utilizing the rise of middle-men marketing firms to reach faith-based demographics and speak a Christian sales language unfamiliar to most studios.

The winner, Simon Stephens’ THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME, based on Mark Haddon’s best-selling novel, is a thrilling and emotional journey into the mind of an autistic boy. We acquired Ayad Akhtar’s Pulitzer Prize- winning play DISGRACED after its run at Lincoln Center, and we are also publishing his plays THE WHO & THE WHAT and THE INVISIBLE HAND. Robert Askins’ subversive, hilarious play HAND TO GOD introduced this young American writer to Broadway, and the Play Service is happy to be his first publisher. Rounding out the nominess are Mike Poulton’s dazzling adaptations of Hilary Mantel’s WOLF HALL novels. THIS IS OUR YOUTH by Kenneth Lonergan and perennial favorite YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU by Kaufman and Hart were nominated for Best Revival of a Play. • Eric Harris's Journal Transcribed and Annotated
Eric Harris’s Journal Transcribed and annotated by Peter Langman, Ph.D. This transcription has corrected Eric’s writing to some extent in terms of spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. The correction offers two benefits. First, it makes the text easier to read. Second, the corrected spelling is an asset for anyone who wishes to search for a particular word. Though Eric’s writing is usually legible, occasional words are noted as illegible or are tran- scribed with a question mark following to indicate a lack of certainty. The parenthetical phrases are Eric’s; words in brackets are mine. Note that Eric dated his entries at the end, whereas Dylan dated them at the beginning. The numbers in the left column refer to the pages in the Jefferson County Sheriff’s OfficeJCSO ( ) Columbine documents. JCSO has blacked out names other than Eric and Dylan; these are indicated thus: . p. 26,003 I hate the fucking world, too much god damn fuckers in it. Too many thoughts and different societies all wrapped up together in this fucking place called AMERICA. Call it existentialism or whatever the fuck you want. We know what we are to this world and what everyone else is. • A Trip Down Memory Lane by Jerry Levy Things Were a Bit Slow at Lowe Pension Consultants That Monday and I Felt Like Taking
A Trip Down Memory Lane By Jerry Levy Things were a bit slow at Lowe Pension Consultants that Monday and I felt like taking the afternoon off. It was one of those mid-October days in Chicago when the temperature hovers near eighty. We used to call it Indian summer when I was a kid and think nothing of it. Some childhood memories are like that. Years later we realize there’s more to the story that may not be so innocent and we no longer think of them so fondly. The chief actuary gave me the afternoon off. No surprise there. I’m the chief, VP of sales, CEO and the only employee. I had to furlough the rest of my staff with little hope for return. The market meltdown was the last straw for my clients. Things weren’t so hot for small plan actuaries before then, what with a new set of laws called the Pension Protection Act. More like the pension kaput act someone say in a moment of gallows humor. Then the markets took the worst hit since the depression and most small companies couldn’t afford a defined benefit pension plan. I needed some time off to think about my next career, something that involved a tangible product that people could hold in their hands. Good day to go for a walk along the lake shore, I thought. Maybe cut through Lincoln Park Zoo, a short walk from my cubby-hole office on Clark Street. Odd how some things can come full circle in your life.
