PO BOX 3393 PORT ELIZABETH SOUTH AFRICA 2 Fayslah Kun Munazarah Note by the Translator Fayslah Kun Munazarah , first printed in 1933 CE, in the Urdu language, is a thorough rebuttal of the verdicts of kufr issued against four senior Ulama of the Deobandi School. The baseless, slanderous fatwa of kufr was presented in the book, Husam al- Haramayn of Molvi Ahmad Rida Khan Barelwi. Sufficient details about the book are given in the author’s introduction. Due to the paucity of information on the subject in the English language, many Muslims in the English-speaking world were easily swayed towards the fallacious view propounded in Husam al-Haramayn due to the vigour with which the fatwa is propagated by its English-speaking proponents and the gravity of the allegations made. The book translated here provides a balanced, level- headed, point-by-point critique of the fatwa, demonstrating with complete clarity the deception of the original accusations against the Deobandi elders and their innocence from the heresies ascribed to them. -
AL-KINDI 'Philosopher of the Arabs' Abū Yūsuf Yaʿqūb Ibn Isḥāq Al
AL-KINDI ‘Philosopher of the Arabs’ – from the keyboard of Ghurayb Abū Yūsuf Ya ʿqūb ibn Is ḥāq Al-Kindī , an Arab aristocrat from the tribe of Kindah, was born in Basrah ca. 800 CE and passed away in Baghdad around 870 (or ca. 196–256 AH ). This remarkable polymath promoted the collection of ancient scientific knowledge and its translation into Arabic. Al-Kindi worked most of his life in the capital Baghdad, where he benefitted from the patronage of the powerful ʿAbb āssid caliphs al- Ma’mūn (rg. 813–833), al-Muʿta ṣim (rg. 833–842), and al-Wāthiq (rg. 842–847) who were keenly interested in harmonizing the legacy of Hellenic sciences with Islamic revelation. Caliph al-Ma’mūn had expanded the palace library into the major intellectual institution BAYT al-ḤIKMAH (‘Wisdom House ’) where Arabic translations from Pahlavi, Syriac, Greek and Sanskrit were made by teams of scholars. Al-Kindi worked among them, and he became the tutor of Prince A ḥmad, son of the caliph al-Mu ʿtasim to whom al-Kindi dedicated his famous work On First Philosophy . Al-Kindi was a pioneer in chemistry, physics, psycho–somatic therapeutics, geometry, optics, music theory, as well as philosophy of science. His significant mathematical writings greatly facilitated the diffusion of the Indian numerals into S.W. Asia & N. Africa (today called ‘Arabic numerals’ ). A distinctive feature of his work was the conscious application of mathematics and quantification, and his invention of specific laboratory apparatus to implement experiments. Al-Kindi invented a mathematical scale to quantify the strength of a drug; as well as a system linked to phases of the Moon permitting a doctor to determine in advance the most critical days of a patient’s illness; while he provided the first scientific diagnosis and treatment for epilepsy, and developed psycho-cognitive techniques to combat depression. -

Pre-Islamic Arabia The Nomadic Tribes of Arabia The nomadic pastoralist Bedouin tribes inhabited the Arabian Peninsula before the rise of Islam around 700 CE. Family groups called clans formed larger tribal units, which reinforced family cooperation in the difficult living conditions on the Arabian peninsula and protected its members against other tribes. Arab tribes begin to appear in the south Syrian deserts and southern Jordan around 200 CE, but spread from the central Arabian Peninsula after the rise of Islam in the 630s CE. Among the most prominent civilizations were Thamud, which arose around 3000 BCE and lasted to about 300 CE, and Dilmun, which arose around the end of the fourth millennium and lasted to about 600 CE. -

31 Al-Hikmat Volume 28 (2008), pp. 31-56 THE IDEOLOGICAL BACKGROUND OF RATIONALITY IN ISLAM MALIK MUHAMMAD TARIQ* Abstract. Islam the religion of Muslims, founded on Qu’rānic revelations transmitted through the Prophet Muhammad (570-632 AD). The Arabic roots slm, convey the ideas of safety, obedience, submission, commitment, and dedication. The word Islam signifies the self-surrender to Allah that characterizes a Muslim’s relation- ship with God. Islamic tradition records that in 610 and 632 CE Prophet Muhammad began to receive revelations from God through the mediation of Angel Gabriel. The revelations were memorized and recorded word by word, and are today found in Arabic text of the Qur’ān in the precisely the manner God intended.1 The community, working on the basis of pieces of text written ‘on palm leaves or flat stones or in the heart of men’, compiled the text some thirty years after the death of Prophet Muhammad.2 All the Muslims assert unequivocally the divine authorship of the Qur’ān, Muhammad is but the messenger through which it was revealed. Theoretically, the Qur’ān is the primary source of guidance in the Islamic community (Ummah). The Qur’ān text does not, however, provide solutions for every specific problem that might arise. To determine norm of practice, Muslims turned to the lives of Prophet Muhammad and his early companions, preserved in Sunnah, the living tradition of the community. Originally the practicing of Sunnah varied from place to place, reflecting the pre-Islamic local customs of particular region. By the 9th century, however, the diversity evident in local traditions was branded as an innovation (bid’a). -

These uprisings were attempts by the Arab peoples to over throw their governments and bring freedom and change to their societies in order to live in dignity and grace. These populist uprisings produced powerful poetry that of cuses on the corruption of Arab governments and the rampant economic social prob lems. -

Edin Muftić Homer: An Arabic portrait1 Homer is rightfully seen as the first teacher of Hellenism, the poet who educated the Greek, who in turn educated Europe. But, as is well known, Europe doesn’t have a monopoly on Greek heritage. It was also present in the Islamic tradition, where it manifested itself differently. Apart from phi- losophy, mathematics, astronomy, medicine and pharmacology, Greek poetry, even if usually not translated, was also widely read among the Arab-Islamic intellectual elite. The author analyses the extent to which Homer’s works circulated, how well known were his poetics, and the influence his verses exerted during the heyday of Classical Arab-Islamic civilization. Keywords: Homer; translation movement; Al-Biruni; arabic poetry; Al-Farabi; Averroes INTRODUCTION The Greek and Arab epic tradition have much in common. Themes of tribal enmity, invasions and plunder, abduction of women, revenge, heroism, chivalry and love feature prom- inently in both traditions. While the Greeks have Hercules, Perseus, Theseus, Odysseus, Jason or Achilles, the Arabs have ʻAntar bin Šaddād (the “Arab Achilles”), Sayf bin ī Yazan, Az-Zīr Sālim and many others. When it comes to the actual performance of poetry, similarities be- Ḏ tween the two traditions are even greater. Homeric aoidos playing his lyre has a direct coun- terpart in Arab rawin playing his rababa. The Arab wandering poet often shares the fate of his Greek colleague (Imruʼ al-Qays, arafa and Al-Aʻšá, and Abū Nuwās and Al-Mutanabbī are the most famous examples). Greek tyrants who were famous for hosting poets like Ibycus, Anacre- Ṭ on, Simonides, Bacchylides or Pindar, while expelling others like Alcaeus, have a royal counter- part in An-Nuʻmān bin al-Mun ir, the ruler of Hira. -
