LIAISON OFFICERS MEETING 2012

The Santander Group would like to thank most warmly our host institution the University of Leon, Prof. José Ángel aHermida Alonso, Rector of University of Leon and Prof. José Luis Chamosa, Vice-Rector for International Relations and the organizing committee from the international relations office. Special words of gratitude we address to our colleagues Hermenegildo Lopez, Rafael de Paz and Robert O’Dowd for the exceptionally warm reception and a possibility of experiencing the best of the city of Leon, its history and ambience during a festive time.

We would also like to thank all speakers, Unni Kvernhusvik Sagberg from the , Luciano Saso and Mattea Capelli from the Sapienza University of Rome, Barbara Costa from the , Matxalen Llosa from the University of , Marina Casals and Rebeca Thomas from the University of Rovira i Virgili, and Robert O’Dowd from the University of Leon whose contribution made our programme so valuable and productive. We also valued the input of all participants, your feedback and suggestions and more importantly your enthusiasm to collaborate in teams.

SG LO MEETING – FOLLOW-UP

During the LO Meeting in Leon, our member universities have presented in detail projects that have been approved by the Executive Board to be implemented in the current academic year. The projects are as follow:

- Exploratory study to create doctoral academic networks between SG universities, co-ordinated by Dr. Matxalen Llosa Blas from the University of Cantabria

- Erasmus GRAding CONversion System – EGRACONS, initiated and co-ordinated by Valere Meus from , Rafael de Paz from the University of Leon, Luciano Saso from the Sapienza University of Rome, and Sylvain Lamourette from the University of Rouen

- New International Mindset at University Campuses, co-ordinated by Marina Casals from Rovira i Virigili University

- SG Study Abroad Programme, co-ordinated by Rebeca Tomas from Rovira i Virgili University

- Collaboration in the Internationalisation of Science and Technology – CIST, co-ordinated by Prof. John Tuppen

- Continuing Professional Development for Postdocs, initiated by the SG Secretariat

- ICon – Intercontinental Academic Exchange Project, initiated by the SG Secretariat

SG UNIVERSITIES IN ERASMUS MUNDUS CALL 2012 – RESULTS

In the last call for proposals in the Erasmus Mundus as many as 12 SG member universities have been selected in 33 projects as co-ordinators or partners.

The and the University of Liege and Ghent University are co-ordinators of Action 1 projects. In Action 2 Strand 1, Ghent University was granted 3 projects, the University of Porto 2 projects, the Adam Mickiewicz University 2 projects and the 1 project. In Strand 2 the Polytechnic is co-ordinating 1 project. In the Action 3, only the Sapienza University of Rome has received funding.

We would like to congratulate all successful institutions and wish you all the best in their implementation.

SG SUMMER SCHOOL FOR PHD CANDIDATES IN TRANSILVANIA – CONCLUSIONS

30 participants from SG Network and Balkan countries participated in the SG Summer School in Transylvania on Leaderships Skills of Young Researchers as Drivers for Innovation in Higher Education held between 27 August and 1 September 2012, co-ordinated by the Babes-Bolayi University in Romania. The event was organised in collaboration and with the financial support of the Central European Initiative.

The programme was delivered by specialists in the fields of leadership, team building, and entrepreneurship who exposed participants to a series of practical exercises through which they strengthened generic and transferable competences. The Summer School enabled PhD candidates to pro-actively work in teams, to coach others, to solve complex problems, and to adapt to the international environment with the aim to spur innovation.

The SG Network would like to thank warmly the organisers from Babes-Bolyai University, particularly Adina Fodor, Prof. Mircea Maniu, and Anca Kiss for the excellent preparation of the event. We also appreciate greatly contributions of lecturers, Prof. Leo Verhoef from Eindhoven University of Technology, Prof. Hanna Mamzer and Dr. Rafal Dymczyk from Adam Mickiewicz University of Poznan, Prof. Titus Beu and Adina Fodor from the Babes Bolayi University, and Wioletta Wegorowska from the SG Network who added to the success of this event.

60 GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR RESEARCHERS FROM SG MEMBERS FOR COURSES IN SAO PAULO

100 grants covering the cost of travelling, accommodation and subsistence from 31MAR to 06APR, sponsored by FAPESP, are available for 60 selected post-graduate students from outside Brazil and 40 from Brazilian post-graduate programmes for short duration courses in advanced themes in science and technology offered at Sao Paulo School of Advanced Science. The programme of the event on Advances in Molecular Structuring of Food Materials aims to contribute to the advancement of this subject within the larger scope of Brazilian Food Science and Technology. Through this initiative FAPESP expects to establish, in the State of Sao Paulo, a globally competitive hub for talented researchers.
