Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 3 Abstract Iain Sinclair’s London is a labyrinthine city split by multiple forces deliriously replicated in the complexity and contradiction of his own hybrid texts. Sinclair played an integral role in the ‘psychogeographical turn’ of the 1990s, imaginatively mapping the secret histories and occulted alignments of urban space in a series of works that drift between the subject of topography and the topic of subjectivity. In the wake of Sinclair’s continued association with the spatial and textual practices from which such speculative theses derive, the trajectory of this variant psychogeography appears to swerve away from the revolutionary impulses of its initial formation within the radical milieu of the Lettrist International and Situationist International in 1950s Paris towards a more literary phenomenon. From this perspective, the return of psychogeography has been equated with a loss of political ambition within fin de millennium literature. -
Mirrorshade Women: Feminism and Cyberpunk
Mirrorshade Women: Feminism and Cyberpunk at the Turn of the Twenty-first Century Carlen Lavigne McGill University, Montréal Department of Art History and Communication Studies February 2008 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communication Studies © Carlen Lavigne 2008 2 Abstract This study analyzes works of cyberpunk literature written between 1981 and 2005, and positions women’s cyberpunk as part of a larger cultural discussion of feminist issues. It traces the origins of the genre, reviews critical reactions, and subsequently outlines the ways in which women’s cyberpunk altered genre conventions in order to advance specifically feminist points of view. Novels are examined within their historical contexts; their content is compared to broader trends and controversies within contemporary feminism, and their themes are revealed to be visible reflections of feminist discourse at the end of the twentieth century. The study will ultimately make a case for the treatment of feminist cyberpunk as a unique vehicle for the examination of contemporary women’s issues, and for the analysis of feminist science fiction as a complex source of political ideas. -

DARK CITY HIGH the High School Noir of Brick and Veronica Mars Jason A
DARK CITY HIGH THE HIGH SCHOOL NOIR OF BRICK AND VERONICA MARS Jason A. Ney ackstabbing, adultery, blackmail, robbery, corruption, and murder—you’ll find them all here, in a place where no vice is in short supply. You want drugs? Done. Dames? They’re a dime a dozen. But stay on your toes because they’ll take you for all you’re worth. Everyone is work- ing an angle, looking out for number one. Your friend could become your enemy, and if the circumstances are right, your enemy could just as easily become your friend. Alliances are as unpredictable and shifty as a career criminal’s moral compass. Is all this the world of 1940’s and 50’s film noir? Absolutely. But, tures like the Glenn Ford vehicle The Blackboard Jungle (1955) and Bas two recent works—the television show Veronica Mars (2004- melodramas like James Dean’s first feature,Rebel Without a Cause 2007) and the filmBrick (2005)—convincingly argue, it is also the (1955). But a noir film from the years of the typically accepted noir world of the contemporary American high school. cycle (1940-1958) populated primarily by teenagers and set inside a That film noir didn’t extend its seductive, deadly reach into the high school simply does not exist. Perhaps noir didn’t make it all the high schools of the forties and fifties is somewhat surprising, given way into the halls of adolescent learning because adults still wanted how much filmmakers danced around the edges of what we now to believe that the teens of their time retained an element of their call noir when crafting darker stories about teens gone bad. -

The effervescence of New York's underground scene was contagious and spread to England with a 1976 tour of the Ramones that was artfully manipulated to start a fad (after the "100 Club Festival" of september 1976 that turned British punk-rock into a national phenomenon). In the USA the punk subculture was a combination of subterranean record industry and of teenage angst. In Britain it became a combination of fashion and of unemployment. Music in London had been a component of fashion since the times of the Swinging London (read: Rolling Stones). Punk-rock was first and foremost a fad that took over the Kingdom by storm. However, the social component was even stronger than in the USA: it was not only a generic malaise, it was a specific catastrophe. The iron rule of prime minister Margaret Thatcher had salvaged Britain from sliding into the Third World, but had caused devastation in the social fabric of the industrial cities, where unemployment and poverty reached unprecedented levels and racial tensions were brooding. -

PRESS KIT Title: “A Dark Rome” Production: Farbevideo (Italy) Written, produced and directed by: Andrés Rafael Zabala Duration: 93 min. Genre: Thriller/Black Comedy Format: Full HD 1920x1080 – (color - 16-9) Audio: Stereo Nationality: Italian Original Language: English Subtitles Languages : Italian, English, Spanish Date of completion: January 2014 “A Dark Rome” “Is a confession enough to keep your ghosts at bay?” SYNOPSIS “A Dark Rome” is the story of a young Welsh artist, Patrick Lewis, who comes to Rome for an apprenticeship as a tattoo artist with his friend Frank Bell, a professional tattooist that he met in the UK the year before. Frank’s tattoo studio is located inside a Beauty Center in Rome. It is a very particular Beauty Center because all its clients are priests. The Beauty Center is owned by Gabriele Messuti and his wife Greta. Both of them lead a double life: Greta is also a jazz singer, Gabriele is also a drug dealer. Patrick starts to work at the Beauty Center and he enjoys the company of Tina and Olga, the two young Roma- nian estheticians, and of Lisa, the Chinese manicurist. Being Frank’s assistant isn’t as easy as Patrick expected. Patrick doesn’t like having to clean the floors of the Be- auty Center, and, being an apprentice, he doesn’t earn any money. After a few days Patrick feels he is already good at his job, and he just doesn’t want to wait any longer to have a proper job. One night Patrick sees Greta walk out of Frank’s apartment. -
