Pressemitteilung Zu Cancer Bats

Michael Grace / Tapeop Behind the Gear
was getting pretty busy at night building custom mic Behind The Gear preamps for people, so I quit working for that company This Issue’s Prince of Preamps and started out on my own. That remained a garage operation for several years until my brother Eben and I Michael Grace joined forces and became partners. We decided we by Walt Szalva wanted to start a manufacturing company and build preamps on a larger scale so we could take advantage of the economies of scale, being able to buy better components and build things that were not absolutely stressed in terms of cost. That was almost twelve years ago when we came out with the first official Grace Design product, which was the 801 preamp. What kind of problems does a small manufacturer like yourself encounter in terms of designing and building Michael Grace started Grace feedback amplifier, or a trans-impedance amp, and something that a larger manufacturer Design in 1994, a boutique pro these types of amplifiers use a different kind of might not encounter? audio company located in Boulder, negative feedback in the current domain instead of the CO. FFS (UK / USA) «FFS» (Domino Records, Release: 05.06.2015)
FFS (UK / USA) «FFS» (Domino Records, Release: 05.06.2015) Collaborations, as FFS would have us believe on their debut album, don’t work. You start off deferential, and strangely reverential – and eventually, you’ll need the Dalai Lama to mediate, between all the patronising, agonising, navel-gazing and differences in work ethic. So when Los Angeles duo Sparks and Glasgow-based quartet Franz Ferdinand decided to record together, it was a flawed and potentially disastrous idea, right? FFS, you couldn’t be more wrong! Not only is ‘Collaborations Don’t Work’ one of the star attractions of the self- titled record that sprang from their collective loins but ‘FFS’ is also one of the strongest albums of either bands’ career. The love of artful corkscrew pop that created a mutual appreciation society kicks off with the lead single ‘Johnny Delusional’ and its soon-come successor ‘Call Girl’, though the hooks driving ‘Police Encounters’, ‘So Desu Ne’ and ‘Piss Off’ are no less fabulous and merciless. This dynamic thrill is countered by the subtler charms of ‘Dictator’s Son’ and ‘Little Guy From The Suburbs’, the haughtier ‘The Power Couple’ and ‘Collaborations Don’t Work’ itself, a multi-tiered quasi-musical that shows off the compositional ambition and savvy humour that defines ‘FFS’. “The real motivation was to make something new, not ‘Franz featuring Russell Mael’, or ‘Sparks with Franz Ferdinand backing them’,” declares FF frontman Alex Kapranos, whose intertwining lead vocals with Russell is another of the record’s principal thrills, like a male version of the Abba approach. -

Development of Musical Ideas in Compositions by Tortoise
DEVELOPMENT OF MUSICAL IDEAS IN COMPOSITIONS BY TORTOISE Reiner Krämer Prologue For more than 25 years, the Chicago-based experimental rock band Tortoise has crossed over multiple popular music genres (ambient music, krautrock, dub, electronica, drums and bass, reggae, etc.) as well as different types of jazz music, and has made use of minimalist Western art music.1 The group is often labeled a pioneer of the »post-rock« genre. Allegedly, Simon Reynolds first used the term in his review of the album Hex by the English east Lon- don band Bark Psychosis (Reynolds 1994a) and shortly afterwards in his arti- cle »Shaking the Rock Narcotic« (Reynolds 1994b: 28-32). In connection to Tortoise he used »post-rock« in his review article of their 1996 album Mil- lions Now Living Will Never Die (Reynolds 1996). Reynolds describes music he labels as ›post-rock‹ where bands use guitars »in [non-rock] ways« to manipulate »timbre and texture rather than riff[s]« and »augment rock's basic guitar-bass-drums lineup with digital technology such as samplers and sequencers« (Reynolds 2017: 509). Most members of Tortoise act as multi- instrumentalists that play different combinations of instruments at different times. As Jeanette Leech (2017: 16) has stated, a typical Tortoise stage set- up can feature vibraphones, marimbas, two drum sets, and a multitude of synthesizers. With regards to the instrumental setup Leech draws up paral- lels with progressive rock of the 1970s but points to one decisive difference within the genres: »for Tortoise, the range of instrumentation [is] about creating mood, not showboating« (ibid.). -
