Fashion Group International® (FGI) Toronto announces first Lifetime Achievement Award recipient -- FGI award bestowed posthumously on Canadian fashion innovator Shirley Cheatley -- Toronto, ON – The Toronto Chapter of Fashion Group International® (FGI) bestowed its first annual Lifetime Achievement Award posthumously on Shirley Cheatley, a long- standing member of FGI and daughter of the Toronto chapter’s founding member, Elen Henderson. The Lifetime Achievement Award has traditionally recognized members who are industry icons or leaders in other Fashion Group chapters around the world. Accepting this honor on behalf of Mrs. Cheatley was her widow Peter, son Peter and daughter-in-law at the chapter’s Annual General Meeting held earlier this week. Mrs. Cheatley passed away in September 2010. “Since FGI Toronto’s inception in 1958, many people have voluntarily given their time and devotion to the organization. We wanted to establish an award that recognizes the significant contributions of truly outstanding members who have gone above and beyond,” said Leesa Butler, regional co-director, Fashion Group International Toronto. “Shirley Cheatley was instrumental in children’s fashionwear,” commented Farley Chatto, regional co-director, Fashion Group International Toronto. “We are proud to showcase a woman who played a key role in our chapter for so many years. She will be greatly missed, not only by FGI but by the entire fashion community,” added Chatto. Mrs. Cheatley sat on the Board of Directors, numerous committees and was the longtime chair of archives for Fashion Group. Her most recognized accomplishment was the transformation of her mother’s small, designer childrenswear local retail destination, into a multi-million dollar international enterprise. Under Shirley’s leadership, the production grew from one line to four including, E-H Girls' Dresses, Elen Henderson Baby, Harper's by Rosemarie and O for boys. Mrs. Cheatley received many industry awards for merchandising excellence including an Ontario Fashion Design Award. During her tenure with FGI, she served for over a decade in various capacities: Treasurer in 1967, Director in 1969, Chair of the Awards Committee and Chair of Archives. Bovine Sex Club 25th Anniversary The Bovine to MarK 25 Years on Queen West With Months of Celebrations TORONTO, ON- Toronto’s infamous Queen West concert venue, Bovine Sex Club is celebrating 25 years. To commemorate this milestone “The Bovine” as locals call it will host numerous events including fundraisers, reunion shows and concerts. The first of which will take place tonight, Thursday May 5th as a part of Canadian Music Week and will continue until the end of this year. Some might be shocked by the longevity The Bovine has endured as owner Darryl Fine admits when the doors first opened many thought they were “too far west too last”. That is no longer the case as the venue is now located in one of the most booming and trendy Toronto neighbourhood’s, a far cry from the desolate Queen West of 25 years ago. Bovine Sex Club started in 1991 with three local notables Chris Sheppard, Wesley Thuro and Darryl Fine who is now the sole owner. The eclectic club filled with colourful curiosities from floor to ceiling has housed many memorable events including parities for U2, Velvet Revolver, Warped Tour, TIFF, and Tommy Lee. There of course have been an uncountable number of electrifying acts such as Anti Flag, Cancer Bats, Rusty, Sum 41 and Billy Talent’s legendary Queen St Fire Relief Charity Show. As the years roll on Fine likes to think of himself as “a passenger on Star Ship Bovine. It’s more of a community project now”. For the past four years this community has had a welcomed addition of the Tiki Bar located on the roof of The Bovine. With the popularity of Queen West Fine feels without the additional bar they would “probably have to move to Parkdale”. Thankfully that is not the case as the Bovine Sex Club is an essential part of Queen West’s identity and is looking forward to the next quarter century. Biography Written for Meg Kenny, MUA Meg Kenny is a freelance professional makeup artist in Toronto, Canada. She has completed the beauty program at the College of Makeup Art and Design, as well as Hair Styling for Makeup Artists at George Brown. She recently had the privilege of working on behalf of Simone Otis at Toronto Fashion Week in February of 2018. Meg is full of energy, life and colour and she brings this to every set she works on (as well as her strong work ethic and full kit). After moving to Toronto in her early 20s, Meg found her way into the local punk and DIY music scene where she took in many shows and fun nights. Though those nights are mostly behind her, the inspiration she absorbed from those eclectic bands and eccentric fashions still lives within her. While working with Meg you are able to see her passion for what she does and all the creativity that comes with it. She is open to both commercial and fun projects. If you would like to work with her, please don’t be afraid to write an email, she would be glad to hear from you. Biographies Written for the Band, TalK Show Host Long Bio: Toronto, Canada’s Talk Show Host have been making punchy indie punk since 2015 and in that time have released three strong EP’s that have been making crowds around North America and Europe jump up, down and dance around at their live shows. Chris (guitar, vocals), Fabien (bass, band baker, import of France) and Sean (drums, backing vocals, also of The Most Serene Republic) have been described by 102.1 The Edge as, “Packed with energetic pop-punk and tonnes of energy”. In fact, Alan Cross of 102.1 The Edge named their single, “I Hate Men (I Hate All Men)” as the “Song You Must Hear This Week” in September 2017. That’s only the beginning, Spotify added the single “Dead Meat” to the official “Punk Unleashed” playlist and their song “We’re Not Here to Make Friends” was included on Spotify’s #PunkFriday Playlist, which is curated by some people who know a thing or two about good punk music, including members of Anti-Flag and The Flatliners. Talk Show Host’s name of their second EP, Perfectly Competent, was a nod to a bad review for their first EP, Disunion Tour. It seems they might need to start finding other inspiration for EP titles as their latest release, Not Here to Make Friends, has been accepted with great acclaim. As The Bad Copy put it, “A catchy and thoughtful EP that suggests big things to come from these Canadian pop-punkers. Don't sleep on this one.” And as Bucket List Reviews said of the EP, “We got a hot one here” along with a 9/10 rating. The trio has not only given the world three great EP’s, in April 2016 they came together to record a cover of The Tragically Hip’s song “Fireworks” in an effort to raise money for the Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research. 2018 has been kind to these three guys as they have been hitting the road, opening up for such bands as: Direct Hit!, Planes Mistaken for Stars and Pet Symmetry. As well as the release of their music video for the single, “I Hate Men (I Hate All Men).” A great tune to play when you want to take down male entitlement. As for the future of Talk Show Host, they are currently writing and recording songs for their first full-length album, which is slated for release in early 2019. Short Bio: Formed in 2015, Toronto, Canada’s Talk Show Host have been making waves across North America and Europe with their take on indie punk with some catchy hooks that would be the perfect theme music to a fun time riot. With three EP’s to their name, their most recent release Not Here to Make Friends, which came out in 2017 has caught the attention of some great influencers such as 102.1 The Edge, Alan Cross and Spotify. So far in 2018 the guys have opened for Direct Hit!, Planes Mistaken for Stars and Pet Symmetry. As of right now they are recording their first full-length album with a potential release date in early 2019.

This Ain’t a Scene, It’s a Buzzer Race Sadboys are temporary. Sad trumpets are forever. Written by Brian Luong Tossups: 1. This band’s extensive and impressive merchandise catalogue can be attributed to guitarist Nick Steinhardt’s side occupation as a graphic designer. A live EP following this band’s sophomore studio album was titled Live on BBC Radio 1 and featured vocals from Jordan Dreyer of La Dispute. It’s not Red Hot Chili Peppers, but this band’s distinct asterisk-shaped logo was meant to evoke converging road markings leading to a sunset, and was first used in promotional artwork for the band’s second album, with that album’s initials “PTSBBAM” arranged in the negative spaces of the logo. This band’s 2016 single “Palm Dreams” was described by their frontman as a song about his inability to ask his mother about why she moved to California after she passed. The album from which that single is taken, as a whole, deals with themes of frontman Jeremy Bolm grieving the loss of his mother due to cancer. For 10 points, give the name of this Los Angeles-based post-hardcore band, which you may know from the albums Parting the Sea Between Brightness and Me and Stage Four. ANSWER: Touché Amoré 2. And even fewer do it on their own terms. This Drama is one of those bands. Come and see it for yourself during their only concert at the Canadian Music Week. Their blend of furious, uncompromising punk rock laced with hardcore tinges and a hint of late 80’s gutter is a relentless, explosive, mouth- watering assault better known as “punk n’ roll.” And it’s what This Drama does best. One part conventional instrumentation and one part spaztastic attack, a battling theme of familiarity and surprise propel their sets with roaring rock riffs, pummeling drums, jarring tempo shifts, a palette of powerchords and venom-spitting vocals. Obsessively influenced by the spirit and the brawn of early SoCal punk rock scene, This Drama delivers high-energy music fueled by urgency and intensity that feels, sounds and smells like pride in living outside of the established social order. This Drama has succeeded by making their own way, far from the entrenched ideas, values, needs and culture of a what they believe to be a dying society.
