Conversations with Young Two-Spirit, Trans and Queer Indigenous People About the Term Two-Spirit by Marie Laing A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Social Justice Education Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto © Copyright by Marie Laing 2018 Conversations with Young Two-Spirit, Trans and Queer Indigenous People About the Term Two-Spirit Marie Laing Master of Arts Department of Social Justice Education University of Toronto 2018 Abstract Since the coining of the term in 1990, two-spirit has been used with increasing frequency in reference to Indigenous LGBTQ people; however, there is rarely explicit discussion of to whom the term two-spirit refers. The word is often simultaneously used as both an umbrella term for all Indigenous people with complex genders or sexualities, and with the specific, literal understanding that two-spirit means someone who has two spirits. This thesis discusses findings from a series of qualitative interviews with young trans, queer and two-spirit Indigenous people living in Toronto. Exploring the ways in which participants understand the term two-spirit to be a meaningful and complex signifier for a range of ways of being in the world, this paper does not seek to define the term two-spirit; rather, following the direction of research participants, the thesis instead seeks to trouble the idea that articulating a definition of two-spirit is a worthwhile undertaking. ii Acknowledgments There are many people without whom I would not have been able to complete this research. Thank you to my supervisor, Dr.

Fashion Group International® (FGI) Toronto announces first Lifetime Achievement Award recipient -- FGI award bestowed posthumously on Canadian fashion innovator Shirley Cheatley -- Toronto, ON – The Toronto Chapter of Fashion Group International® (FGI) bestowed its first annual Lifetime Achievement Award posthumously on Shirley Cheatley, a long- standing member of FGI and daughter of the Toronto chapter’s founding member, Elen Henderson. The Lifetime Achievement Award has traditionally recognized members who are industry icons or leaders in other Fashion Group chapters around the world. Accepting this honor on behalf of Mrs. Cheatley was her widow Peter, son Peter and daughter-in-law at the chapter’s Annual General Meeting held earlier this week. Mrs. Cheatley passed away in September 2010. “Since FGI Toronto’s inception in 1958, many people have voluntarily given their time and devotion to the organization. We wanted to establish an award that recognizes the significant contributions of truly outstanding members who have gone above and beyond,” said Leesa Butler, regional co-director, Fashion Group International Toronto. “Shirley Cheatley was instrumental in children’s fashionwear,” commented Farley Chatto, regional co-director, Fashion Group International Toronto. “We are proud to showcase a woman who played a key role in our chapter for so many years. She will be greatly missed, not only by FGI but by the entire fashion community,” added Chatto.

Designed and built in-house by our staff of engineers, this robotic “Drum Machine,” called the Gluing Gantry, ensures that every Evans head has a true collar. A series of vacuum fixtures holds the film in place for each head while the robotic gluing arm circles above the hoop and dispenses epoxy. The result is a drumhead that tunes both easily and consistently. At Evans, we do it right the first time. And every time. Check out what Peter Erskine has to say about Evans drumheads at www.evansdrumheads.com PO Box 290 • Farmingdale, NY 11735 We’ve been making the world’s finest sticks for years. And experience tells us that there are no shortcuts when it comes to making a stick. There is, however a very good short- cut when choosing one. The journey from wooden dowel to finished drumstick is a tough one. Each stick makes its way through the hands of several craftsmen before it leaves us. And at every test, there’s always the chance of getting turned into firewood. But it does get easier when our sticks reach the store. Because once you feel a pair in your hands, you’ll appreciate the time it spent in ours.

May 26, 2016 BACKGROUNDER 2016 Coca-Cola Stage lineup Christian Hudson Appearing Thursday, July 7, 7 p.m. Website: http://www.christianhudsonmusic.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ChristianHudsonMusic Twitter: www.twitter.com/CHsongs While most may know Christian Hudson by his unique and memorable performances at numerous venues across Western Canada, others seem to know him by his philanthropy. This talented young man won the prestigious Calgary Stampede Talent Show last summer but what was surprising to many was he took his prize money of $10,000 and donated it all to the local drop-in centre. He was touched by the stories he was told by a few people experiencing homelessness he had met one night prior to the contest’s finale. His infectious originals have caught the ears of many in the industry that are now assisting his career. He was honoured to receive 'The Spirit of Calgary' Award at the inaugural Vigor Awards for his generosity. Hudson will soon be touring Canada upon the release of his first single on national radio. Unapologetically himself, the Alberta born singer-songwriter and performer is both bold in range and musical creativity and has a passion and reverence for the art of music and performance that has captured the attention of music fans across the country. He spent the major part of early 2016 as one of the opening acts on the Johnny Reid tour and is also signed to Johnny Reid’s company.
