Some Albums to Keep Your Toes Warm This October Pt 2
Some Albums To Keep Your Toes Warm This October Pt 2. Bittles‘ Magazine | Record Review I was arm-wrestling a tiger the other day (my editor told me I had to make the beginning of my articles more exciting) when I suddenly realised that I had no time for such frivolity as I had some great albums to review. Quickly admitting defeat, I retreated to my listening studio (bedroom) and immersed myself in some of the fantastic records that will be hitting the record store shelves this October. By JOHN BITTLES We have the UK house of Huxley, the indie bleakness of Grouper, the disco diva-isms of Munk, the techno bass of Distal and so much more. But really, in a month when there is, finally, a new album by Glaswegian duo Slam, there is only one place we can begin. Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle have long been established as bona fide legends of the house and techno scene! Their record label Soma is over 400 releases old, their DJ sets at clubs like The Sub Club and The Arches in Glasgow are discussed with an air of awed reverence, and, as Slam, the duo have released some of the finest electronic music known to man. And now, in the year 2014 they give us their first album in seven years with the deep and moody brilliance of Reverse Proceed. The cinematic ambience of Tokyo Subway, Visual Capture and the title track open proceedings and are the perfect introduction to the deliciously deep sounds to come. In fact it’s not until the techno futurism of Synchronicity that we even get our very first sign of a beat. -

DJ Koze – Festen Der Aldrig Må Stoppe!

Michael Grace / Tapeop Behind the Gear
was getting pretty busy at night building custom mic Behind The Gear preamps for people, so I quit working for that company This Issue’s Prince of Preamps and started out on my own. That remained a garage operation for several years until my brother Eben and I Michael Grace joined forces and became partners. We decided we by Walt Szalva wanted to start a manufacturing company and build preamps on a larger scale so we could take advantage of the economies of scale, being able to buy better components and build things that were not absolutely stressed in terms of cost. That was almost twelve years ago when we came out with the first official Grace Design product, which was the 801 preamp. The effervescence of New York's underground scene was contagious and spread to England with a 1976 tour of the Ramones that was artfully manipulated to start a fad (after the "100 Club Festival" of september 1976 that turned British punk-rock into a national phenomenon). In the USA the punk subculture was a combination of subterranean record industry and of teenage angst. In Britain it became a combination of fashion and of unemployment. Music in London had been a component of fashion since the times of the Swinging London (read: Rolling Stones). Punk-rock was first and foremost a fad that took over the Kingdom by storm. However, the social component was even stronger than in the USA: it was not only a generic malaise, it was a specific catastrophe. The iron rule of prime minister Margaret Thatcher had salvaged Britain from sliding into the Third World, but had caused devastation in the social fabric of the industrial cities, where unemployment and poverty reached unprecedented levels and racial tensions were brooding. -
