CLUB ACTIVITY ON A ROLL

Club activity has been building steadily since the beginning of the season in late April. A cool and wet May contributed to a slow start, but a number of social and sailing events ( Lobster Boil, Laser Masters Nationals, Ultimate 20 Nationals), as well as positive feedback spreading on the dining experience, have all contributed to a spike in club activity. Dining revenue in May was up 8% from a year ago ($19.5k vs $18.0K), in June up 11% from a year ago ($24.1 vs $21.8k), and in July up 27% from a year ago ($43.2 vs $34.1). Congratulations are in order for club manager Marilyn Baker, chef Jim Ruehle, as well as a number of member committees (eg House, Dock and Grounds, Social, Sailing). They have all made important contributions to our succesful season!

There were 145 students enrolled this summer in our learn to sail, learn to race and race team. Our instructors Shari McDonald, Genni Perry, Ryan Kuja, Sam Padnos, Alex Post, Jay Mitchell, Lexi Petter, DJ Litts and Anthony Norris successfully led eight weeks of morning and afternoon opti, laser, JY15 and 420 classes through some easy sailing and some challenging winds on Lakes Mac and Michigan. It was one of the first sailing experiences for many of our beginner sailors being on Lake Michigan in light air days. The kids had so much excitement to share with their parents on those days! Imagine being 8 years old and in your own sailboat looking up at Big Red! What a rush! Kudos to my staff for many, many priceless experiences for our kids! If you haven’t seen it already, look in the trophy case in the Buoy Room. We’ve BROUGHT BACK the WMYSA CHAMPIONSHIP to MAC BAY! (Pictured above is our winning team.) There were four regattas this summer that we participated in. The second one was hosted by MBYC and we had a record 101 boats sailing! The Championship regatta was held at Muskegon Yacht Club on August 12. The depth of our program was the difference this summer. We had

Banba Donnelly, Social Chair, 2011 7 Canada’s Cup Week: Far more than we ever imagined A quick check of the box scores shows that the Royal Canadian Yacht Club defeated MBYC 5 – 3 to take the Cup back to Toronto. But don’t believe everything you read. Despite losing current possession of the Cup, we at MBYC were actually big winners, because we set a new standard for Canada’s Cup regatta management and hospitality.

During the 2 weeks of the event, we hosted world-caliber sailors and officials from 6 different countries, and the comments we received were quite revealing: “I had no idea this place existed…” “Macatawa is a hidden gem…” “What a perfect venue for this event…” “Race management was perfect…” “Challenging conditions…” “Ferocious competition…” “Best run event I have ever attended…” “Tremendous hospitality…” “The food was better than events in France – where they take their food very seriously…” In that light, we should take a moment to identify the key factors for our success.

The first requirement to participate in the Cup is to have a champion willing to commit time, talent and treasure to the competition. It was Bob Hughes’ personal passion that gave us the opportunity to defend the Cup. Hughes and Team Heritage, led by Doug DeVos with strong support from Ted Etheridge, left no stone unturned in fielding a strong defense. Heritage was prepared meticulously. Great sailors were recruited and then practiced extensively. Our team did a great job, and, in the end, several critical races were decided by feet, not boat lengths. The results could have easily gone for us.

The second requirement to host a Cup event is a strong organizing committee. Commodores Dave Sligh, Sr. and Bob DeJong did yeoman duty, recruiting 8 volunteers, organizing committees, All of the work ashore would have gone ahead with the confidence that whatever raising funds, while simultaneously unnoticed if the racing had not been future goals our Club and sailors set for negotiating the terms of combat with executed with precision. Thanks for your support, and I look forward to a great 2012! I’d like to acknowledge my predecessor, John Donnelly. John Jack Knoblauch has a rich history at MBYC, and I would confess that I did not know John very well prior to coming on the bridge. You can get acquainted with another member by trading sailing stories over a beer, but you really get to know a person’s character when you work side by side with someone through some challenging issues. I am grateful for the chance to work closely with John, and have come to appreciate his many strong qualities. John is very dedicated, and has a strong desire to do what is right for the club. He has put his heart and soul into the Commodore’s role this past year, spending many hours at the club with members, staff, or out on the race course helping 2 MMM acatawa Bayayay
