The Cottage 3 Hollow Meadows Mews | Hollow Meadows | Sheffield | S6 6GJ THE COTTAGE “We find it hard to imagine not having all this splendour in our lives anymore and we shall greatly miss living in this choice spot of the Peak National Park. We shall always remember having direct access to the Rivelin Brook and Hallam Moor where the standing stone overlooks our property. Almost every weekend we have enjoyed rambling across the road, roaming around the countryside and whenever the sun is out we have sat by the pond, or by the wonderful open fire in the living room. The house has been a reliably safe space to us and we are sad to lose its deep sense of history as much as the peace we have experienced there.” An impressive character home privately enclosed within a tree lined boundary, occupying a plot approaching ½ an acre, enjoying exceptionally well presented south facing gardens to the rear elevation. Seller Insight It was the location and character of 3 Hollow Meadows Mews, which first attracted current owners Digby and Emmy to the property. Located less than four miles from Sheffield University, with easy access to the city via the Manchester Road the property’s situation combines country living with work in Sheffield, just ten minutes away. “We liked the characterful buildings with their inner courtyard” say Digby and Emmy, “as these provide special security, allowing us to leave the house with complete peace of mind, whilst at the back of the house we feel very much in our own space, in the cottage garden, which is surrounded by the Peak District countryside and which is our own hidden paradise with its trees and pond.” Since moving into 3 Hollow Meadows, Digby and Emmy have made various improvements and renovations. “Three years ago we created a new garden room with underfloor heating, as well as an additional quiet room in the former garage, next to a brand new additional ground floor bathroom with walk in shower and toilet. This has effectively created the possibility of an independent ‘granny flat’” they say. “We also redid the patio area of the garden, which now has a wide sandstone area to sit in the sun or shade with a broad and luxurious staircase leading into the garden. We also created a classic library area in the second reception room, with fitted desks and bookcases, to house a collection of over a thousand books!” A new boiler has also been installed and the plumbing and electrics brought up to date and we have added built in wardrobes in the master bedroom and dressing room and renovated its en-suite shower room. “We made considerable improvements in the garden too” say Digby and Emmy, “with the creation of 15 raised vegetable beds, paths, an additional pond, and thirty fruit trees, which are all mature enough to be bearing fruit now. We know the next owners will enjoy the apples in autumn” They have also created an electrical supply to all parts of the garden and sheds with garden lighting, to create an atmospheric outdoor area both by day and by night. Digby and Emmy have had much enjoyment from the garden over the years. “The garden is a haven for birds and wildlife and we have pheasants living on the land, as well as house martins and many other birds, including nuthatches, blackbirds, thrushes, woodpeckers, many different sorts of tits and robins” they say. “The lily pond is a breeding area for frogs, toads, newts and dragon flies. Fields border the garden, with stables for horses and another pond on the north side, a wood on the east side and fields with sheep on the south side. The garden is always sunny somewhere throughout the day and we have bonfires in it regularly.” The local area also has much to offer. There is a regular bus service into Sheffield on the Manchester Road and the drive into Sheffield is both brief and beautiful. On local schooling, Digby and Emmy say: “The local schools (in Bradfield) do well in the Sheffield league table, but our children went to Tapton school which is within easy reach of the property in nearby Cross Pool, where there are also many good shops.”* Because we are both authors, we have spent a lot of time writing in our library, feeling inspired by the sight of our beautiful garden through the French windows. This together with the enjoyment of cosy evenings by the original fireplace in the living room (which used to be the sewing room of the hospital) after a bracing walk over the moors or by the river, are probably our favourite features, which we know the new owners will be totally delighted by as soon as they move in.” You can directly walk to Stanage Edge and many other places from the property and it is very special to be part of the Peak National Park and the Wymingbrook nature reserve. There are many hidden footpaths almost privately available just on your doorstep. There are good supplies of bilberries and blackberries and bluebells just across the road and fields with sheep surround the property.” We have had countless celebrations in the house over the seventeen years we have lived here and the mews itself has had many Guy Fawkes and summer barbecue parties. We have sometimes gone on mews’ walks in the peak district and of course, over the years, we have had friends and family from abroad, coming to stay with us in our country idyll, to come and enjoy the wonderful surroundings with us.” Bedroom A rear facing room with fitted wardrobes, a radiator and a sash window which overlooks the garden.
