The Cottage 3 Hollow Meadows Mews | Hollow Meadows | Sheffield | S6 6GJ the COTTAGE The Cottage 3 Hollow Meadows Mews | Hollow Meadows | Sheffield | S6 6GJ THE COTTAGE “We find it hard to imagine not having all this splendour in our lives anymore and we shall greatly miss living in this choice spot of the Peak National Park. We shall always remember having direct access to the Rivelin Brook and Hallam Moor where the standing stone overlooks our property. Almost every weekend we have enjoyed rambling across the road, roaming around the countryside and whenever the sun is out we have sat by the pond, or by the wonderful open fire in the living room. The house has been a reliably safe space to us and we are sad to lose its deep sense of history as much as the peace we have experienced there.” An impressive character home privately enclosed within a tree lined boundary, occupying a plot approaching ½ an acre, enjoying exceptionally well presented south facing gardens to the rear elevation. The property which dates back to 1826 has been sympathetically converted, retaining original Victorian features, resulting in a substantial four-bedroom home presenting versatile accommodation. Forming part of this impressive mews development and occupying the most enviable of locations surrounded by the stunning open countryside associated with the Peak National Park. Whilst immediately rural offering an idyllic external lifestyle Sheffield City centre is accessed with in a 10-minute drive as are local services and amenities including highly regarded schools. Ground Floor A part glazed entrance door opens to the breakfast kitchen. Breakfast Kitchen A spacious room with full tiling to the floor, a radiator, an internal sash window looking through into the Garden Room and presented with kitchen furniture comprising base cupboards with work surfaces over that incorporate a one and a half bowl single drainer sink unit with a mixer tap over. Appliances include an integral oven and grill with a four ringed hob and extractor hood whilst having a fridge freezer, plumbing for a dishwasher and space for an additional fridge. This room has spotlighting to the ceiling, full tiling to the floor with under floor heating, an exposed feature stone wall and access through to the snug and cloaks room. Snug Formally a single garage; this room has a part glazed door opening to the front aspect of the property, a window, a radiator and a useful storage cupboard. A further cupboard conceals plumbing for an automatic washing machine and space for a dryer whilst a second cupboard has an integral pedestal wash hand basin. Wet Room Presented with a walk-in ‘wet room style’ shower, a pedestal wash hand basin and a low flush W.C. This room has Travertine tiling to the walls, full tiling to the floor, spotlighting to the ceiling, an extractor fan and a part glazed door which opens onto the rear garden. Study A versatile space with a sash window overlooking the garden, coving to the ceiling and access through to an inner hallway which has an original oak return staircase rising to first floor level bypassing a sash window which has an original feature arch over with exposed brickwork. The room has two radiators and windows to front and rear elevations with exposed brickwork to the arches allowing excellent levels of natural light. Library A versatile room currently used as a home office and library with patio doors opening onto the rear garden, a double panelled radiator and a window to the front aspect. Bedroom A double room with sash windows to front and rear elevations allowing good levels of natural light, coving to the ceiling, two radiators and fitted wardrobes. Seller Insight It was the location and character of 3 Hollow Meadows Mews, which first attracted current owners Digby and Emmy to the property. Located less than four miles from Sheffield University, with easy access to the city via the Manchester Road the property’s situation combines country living with work in Sheffield, just ten minutes away. “We liked the characterful buildings with their inner courtyard” say Digby and Emmy, “as these provide special security, allowing us to leave the house with complete peace of mind, whilst at the back of the house we feel very much in our own space, in the cottage garden, which is surrounded by the Peak District countryside and which is our own hidden paradise with its trees and pond.” Since moving into 3 Hollow Meadows, Digby and Emmy have made various improvements and renovations. “Three years ago we created a new garden room with underfloor heating, as well as an additional quiet room in the former garage, next to a brand new additional ground floor bathroom with walk in shower and toilet. This has effectively created the possibility of an independent ‘granny flat’” they say. “We also redid the patio area of the garden, which now has a wide sandstone area to sit in the sun or shade with a broad and luxurious staircase leading into the garden. We also created a classic library area in the second reception room, with fitted desks and bookcases, to house a collection of over a thousand books!” A new boiler has also been installed and the plumbing and electrics brought up to date and we have added built in wardrobes in the master bedroom and dressing room and renovated its en-suite shower room. “We made considerable improvements in the garden too” say Digby and Emmy, “with the creation of 15 raised vegetable beds, paths, an additional pond, and thirty fruit trees, which are all mature enough to be bearing fruit now. We know the next owners will enjoy the apples in autumn” They have also created an electrical supply to all parts of the garden and sheds with garden lighting, to create an atmospheric outdoor area both by day and by night. Digby and Emmy have had much enjoyment from the garden over the years. “The garden is a haven for birds and wildlife and we have pheasants living on the land, as well as house martins and many other birds, including nuthatches, blackbirds, thrushes, woodpeckers, many different sorts of tits and robins” they say. “The lily pond is a breeding area for frogs, toads, newts and dragon flies. Fields border the garden, with stables for horses and another pond on the north side, a wood on the east side and fields with sheep on the south side. The garden is always sunny somewhere throughout the day and we have bonfires in it regularly.” The local area also has much to offer. There is a regular bus service into Sheffield on the Manchester Road and the drive into Sheffield is both brief and beautiful. On local schooling, Digby and Emmy say: “The local schools (in Bradfield) do well in the Sheffield league table, but our children went to Tapton school which is within easy reach of the property in nearby Cross Pool, where there are also many good shops.”* Because we are both authors, we have spent a lot of time writing in our library, feeling inspired by the sight of our beautiful garden through the French windows. This together with the enjoyment of cosy evenings by the original fireplace in the living room (which used to be the sewing room of the hospital) after a bracing walk over the moors or by the river, are probably our favourite features, which we know the new owners will be totally delighted by as soon as they move in.” You can directly walk to Stanage Edge and many other places from the property and it is very special to be part of the Peak National Park and the Wymingbrook nature reserve. There are many hidden footpaths almost privately available just on your doorstep. There are good supplies of bilberries and blackberries and bluebells just across the road and fields with sheep surround the property.” We have had countless celebrations in the house over the seventeen years we have lived here and the mews itself has had many Guy Fawkes and summer barbecue parties. We have sometimes gone on mews’ walks in the peak district and of course, over the years, we have had friends and family from abroad, coming to stay with us in our country idyll, to come and enjoy the wonderful surroundings with us.” Bedroom A rear facing room with fitted wardrobes, a radiator and a sash window which overlooks the garden.

University of Sheffield Library. Special Collections and Archives Ref: SLI 22 Title: Beet Lantern Slide Collection Scope: A collection of just under 2,500 lantern slides collected by Arthur Edgar Beet, an academic in the Applied Science Department at the University of Sheffield in the first half of the 20th century. Dates: Late 19th and early 20th century Level: Fonds Extent: c.2,500 slides Name of Creator: Arthur Edgar Beet Administrative/biographical history: This collection consists of just under 2,500 magic lantern slides covering a wide variety of subjects, including photographs of late 19th century Sheffield, illustrations of scenes from children’s tales and Bible stories, images of the Boer War and the First World War, portraits of important historical figures, and photographs of London and European cities. The majority of the slides are standard UK lantern slides 3¼ inches square, but there are also a wide range of panorama slides, single slipper slides, double slipper slides, glass pivot slides, rackwork slides and rare and unique homemade glass slides. Arthur Edgar Beet was a lecturer in fuel technology at the University of Sheffield in the first half of the twentieth century. He was an amateur local historian who developed an interest in collecting lantern slides and projection equipment: a large addition to his collection was made in 1954 by John Arthur Southern, who bequeathed to Beet his own collection of 800 slides and a late 19th century projector. On Beet’s death in 1968, his son, A.D.H. Beet offered to donate the collection of slides to the University of Sheffield.
