Morton* EXECUTIVE SUMMARY • Since the early 2000s an expanding coalition of ethnic minorities in Thailand, initially based in the North, has formed under the global banner of “Indigenous Peoples” (hereafter referred to as IPs) to push for state recognition of their distinct identities and rights as well as to empower themselves to address their particular strengths and problems. • Those claiming IP status in Thailand are pursuing equal rather than special rights relative to other, more full-fledged members of Thai society. They have been lobbying for the passage of a state law governing the “Council of Indigenous Peoples in Thailand” (CIPT), a new, independent quasi-state organ comprised of IP representatives with the central mandate to advise the state on IP-related policies and plans. • While the Thai government remains steadfast in its official position of non-recognition with respect to IPs in Thailand, especially towards their claim of being “indigenous”, the IP movement has nevertheless continued to develop and expand beyond the North to different parts of the country. • In recent years the IP movement has shifted its campaign strategy from an earlier focus on public demonstrations to that of lobbying relevant state agencies. The movement has further devoted its limited time and resources to developing the internal administrative structure of their flagship organization, the “Council of Indigenous Peoples in Thailand”. * Micah F. Mueng district of Lopburi Province is one of the greatest conflict areas in Thailand, where public health concerns of zoonoses transmission from monkey - bites and scratches are high. Currently, there is no epidemiological research of monkey-related injuries in Thailand. Objectives: The purposes of this study were to determine the incidence of monkey-related injuries and investigate the trends and characteristics of the injured cases in Mueng District, Lopburi Province, in 2013 - 2017. Methods: A cross - sectional analytical study was conducted to compare monkey-related injuries and investigate the incidences between locals, Thai, and foreign tourists by collecting secondary data from medical records in 3 hospitals in the study area. The cumulative incidences were used to calculate relative risk between the tourists and the locals. The characteristics of the injury cases are presented by frequency and percentage. Results: Yearly incidences of locals, Thais, and foreign tourists were in the ranges of 9.16 - 18.33, 190.16 - 379.13, and 254.07 – 736.91 per 100,000 population, respectively. The trend of injury was remarkably higher in foreign tourists. -

LINGUISTIC PERSPECTIVES OF THAI CULTURE by Peansiri Vongvipanond This paper was presented to a workshop of teachers of social science organized by the University of New Orleans, USA (Summer 1994) 1. Introduction Culture is a complex phenomenon, a sum total of behavior and belief of a society. This paper is an attempt to offer a partial description of the culture of "khon thai" or Thai people as reflected in the Thai language. 2. The "mai-pen-rai" people "Mai-pen-rai" can be approximately translated as "It does not really matter." or "It is not a problem.” The expression reflects Thai people's attitude towards themselves, the people they come into contact with and the world around them. Almost everybody and everything is acceptable to the Thais. Objections and conflicts are to be avoided at all cost. Thai people are known for their tolerance and compromising nature. This cultural trait can perhaps be traced back to the linguistic experience of the Thai people. Thai people is a sub group in the language community in which the various languages of the Tai- Kadai family are spoken. The Tai-Kadai speakers live in an area which stretches east-west from the Southern coast of China to Assam in the North of India and north-south from Yunnan and Kwangxi in the South of China to the Indonesian Archipelago. When Tai-kadai speakers from different groups meet and start to communicate in their own languages, they can reach a certain degree of mutual intelligibility, especially at the lexical level. It does not take long after that for these Tai-Kadai speakers to feel a sense of solidarity or even kinship for reasons which will become clear later in this paper. -

Nowadays, the name people in Dien Bien Phu province call themselves is "Tai Dam" during the period when France came to rule Vietnam and Laos.They called tribes in the Black River basin Tai Dam. It’s not becausethe Tai Damlived in the Black River Basin, but they preferred to their unique black clothing dyed with the Hom (Baphicacanthus cusia) or Indigo (Indigofera tinctoria). The so-called "Lao Song", in fact, their race is not Laos. The reason for the name is due to the migration from Laos down to Siam. The term "Song people" or "Tai Song Dam" is more acceptable. For instance, a group of people in Phetchaburi is called "Song" or "Thai Song Dam" Picture 1 The province of Vietnam or Laos is the residence to Tai Dam people with Thaeng as a capital. -

Because of various migrations from wars, economy and politics, Lopburi have had many various cultures and traditions from different traits. The influential ethic groups were Thai Phuan and Chinese. This research aims to study wrapping culture of each influential ethnic group. Analyze art identity, and beauty of each ethnic group in Lopburi province. The research is conducted by monitoring the way of life, traditions, ceremonies, beliefs, wisdom and contextual changes of the social life of these ethnic groups. Two ethnic groups in Lopburi Province were observed : Thai Phuan group and the Chinese groupwere samples in this study. The study has found that (1) every ethnic group in this study has its own art identity of wrapping culture and the Chinese group has most identity of art, (2) some wrapping culture has been lost from their way of life due to social, economic and politic changes, (3) some groups have preserved their wrapping cultures basically intact, i.e. the styles and materials used have not changed, (4) some wrapping cultures have deeper implied meanings such as those of the Kao Tom Mud’s, Manuscripts’ etc. -

The main important parts in this study based on content analysis as documentary research by selecting primary sources from the books, academic books, Shan dictionary, Thai dictionary, library, online research and the research studied from informants' native speakers for 6 persons. -

Negative Markers in Dialects of Northern Thai
Intercultural Communication Studies XIX: 3 2010 Rungrojsuwan Negative Markers in Dialects of Northern Thai Sorabud Rungrojsuwan, Mae Fah Luang University Negative markers in Thai are often used as a tool for lexical classification (either verbs or non-verbs). However, forms and functions of this type of words are rarely mentioned in Thai reference grammar books. The present study aims to investigate the realization and syntactic characteristics of negative markers in dialects of Northern Thai. Using Thai Concordance Program, example sentences where negative markers occur were elicited from a narrative corpus of dialects of Northern Thai. Results show that there are two subdialects of Northern Thai (Lower and Upper Northern Dialects) which used different forms of negative markers /mâj/ and ɔ/, respectively. In relation to syntactic characteristics, it was found that negative markers are used as (1) pre-modifiers (/mâj/ and ɔ/) indicating negati ve meani ng and ( - /) indicating non-negative meanings (either question or persuasion). Moreover, it was claimed that the two types of negative markers are two allomorphs of the same morpheme because they occur in complementary distribution. In relation to meaning, the relationship between negative and non-negative meanings is proposed. Future study on grammaticalization is also suggested in order to prove the relationship between the negative and non-negative forms. Negative Markers in Dialects of Northern Thai Thailand is a country which is rich with cultures and languages. In terms of geography, different dialects of Thai are used in different areas while Standard Thai is used as the official language. In terms of linguistic similarity and difference, it can be said that communication between Thai people from different dialects could be, to some extent, effective. -
