Jaarverslag 2006 - 2007 International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) toont de nieuwste onafhankelijke en vernieuwende films uit de wereld en is een platform voor actuele filmkunst, opkomend en gevestigd filmtalent en filmgerelateerde kunst. Naast de vertoning van films steunt het filmfestival actief de totstandkoming van auteurscinema en de deskundigheid van filmtalent, onafhankelijke filmindustrie en filmkritiek. Een internationale coproductiemarkt (CineMart), een fonds voor filmmakers in ontwikkelingslanden (Hubert Bals Fonds), trainingprojecten (Rotterdam Lab; Trainee Project for Young Film Critics) en debatten voor filmprofessionals maken deel uit van het filmfestival. Behalve via het filmfestival en de internationale activiteiten van Hubert Bals Fonds en CineMart, zorgt de Stichting Filmfestival Rotterdam er voor dat de kunstzinnige film in Nederland op andere wijzen te zien blijft: via de filmtheaters (Tigers on Tour), op DVD (Tiger Releases), televisie (NPS Wereldcinema) en online (Tigeronline.nl). Op landelijk, regionaal en lokaal niveau brengt IFFR studenten en scholieren in contact met onafhankelijke filmkunst via de Rotterdam Film Course, Meet the Maestro, Filmblik Rotterdam en Hollywood in de Klas. The Aspen Institute Germany ANNUAL REPORT 2007 2008 The Aspen Institute 2 ANNUAL REPORT 2007 2008 The Aspen Institute ANNUAL REPORT 2007 3 2008 Dear Friend of the Aspen Institute In the following pages you will find a report on the Aspen Institute Germany’s activities for the years 2007 and 2008. As you may know, the Aspen Institute Germany is a non-partisan, privately supported organization dedicated to values-based leadership in addressing the toughest policy challenges of the day. As you will see from the reports on the Aspen European Strategy Forum, Iran, Syria, Lebanon and the Balkans that follow, a significant part of Aspen’s current work is devoted to promoting dialogue between key stakeholders on the most important strategic issues and to building lasting ties and constructive exchanges between leaders in North America, Europe and the Near East. The reports on the various events that Aspen convened in 2007 and 2008 show how Aspen achieves this: by bringing together interdisciplinary groups of decision makers and experts from business, academia, politics and the arts that might otherwise not meet. These groups are convened in small-scale conferences, seminars and discussion groups to consider complex issues in depth, in the spirit of neutrality and open mindedness needed for a genuine search for common ground and viable solutions. The Aspen Institute organizes a program on leadership development. In the course of 2007 and 2008, this program brought leaders from Germany, Lebanon, the Balkans and the United States of America together to explore the importance of values-based leadership together with one another. -

Uma parte essencial desse debate foi a participação dos estudantes numa incipiente (embora efêmera e limitada) abertura do espaço público. Mas essa política de reforma teve o resultado inesperado de trazer à tona as vozes de contestação da organização normativa autoritária do campo político, expondo as contradições constitutivas do sistema e seu funcionamento ambíguo, e ameaçando por um momento a dominação da elite política religiosa-revolucionária. Essa ameaça ocorreu porque os estudantes agiam segundo uma lógica republicana de igualdade jurídico-política e exigiam a instauração desse padrão, prometido por Khatami durante a campanha eleitoral. -

Political Satire, the Barometer of Press Freedom: A Review of Political Satire in the Iranian Press during the 2000s Seyed Mahmood Farjami* Abstract: Political satire has played a prominent part in the social and political sphere of journalism in Iran from the first appearance of the independent press at the beginning of the twentieth century. This paper examines its problems and achievements in the Iranian press during the first decade of the twenty-first century, including their historical context over the past one hundred years. Legal and other important issues issues (e.g. Press Laws) affecting the Iranian press are reviewed in addition to non-political forms of the genre of satire, which significantly have often been used for political ends by authorities in Iran. Only three years after the Office of Censorship (Edareye Sansour) was established by Etemad Al-Dowleh by the order of Nasereddin Shah in February, 1885, to maintain tight control over all the presses publishing inside the country as well as publications delivered from outside, the first newspaper wholly devoted to satiric content was registered with the government. -

Unique in the sense that your work is of unprecedented importance, but also that challenges you face are yours alone. The isolation, evident throughout this report, is an important factor in this, combined with a passionate solidarity with and commitment to all your countrymen and women living under severe repression. Because we are based in the Netherlands, we at Zamaneh Media have the luxury of regular and close contact with various other exiled media organizations for audiences in different countries, especially Radio Dabanga and Radio Tamazuj. Through these encounters, we feel less alone. We found that exiled media organizations like us not only share a similar passion, but also face challenges that often are remarkably similar. Not only editorial challenges, but also financial, organizational and security-related ones. This has urged us to investigate these similarities thoroughly and structurally. This urge resulted in a two-day expert meeting with representatives of exiled media from all over the world, with the primary aim of sharing both challenges, but also best practices and mitigation tactics. An effort that has been generously supported by the two aforementioned media houses and facilitated by Michelle Foster, all of whom deserve our sincerest gratitude for joining us on this journey. This report details the conclusions of our meeting, supplemented with a wealth of insights from previous work as well as the detailed knowledge of independent media that Newsgain brings to the table. -

Then Sagmeister was photographed, and he used the resulting image in a poster announcing his lecture at Cranbrook Academy of Art, near Detroit. Now an icon of contemporary design, the poster opens up multiple discourses about the body in the second millennium, with allusions ranging from exhibitionism and tattooing to sadomasochist subcultures and even the self-injurious practice of cutting. The poster announces the date, time and place clearly enough, but the image of incised flesh and rising welts challenges us to read the information; while functioning as an announcement of a specific event, it serves as well as a desperate cry to draw attention to the poster itself. -
