York Minster’s Chapter House and its Painted Glass Narratives Volume 1 of 3 Ann Hilary Moxon PhD University of York History of Art December 2017 Abstract This thesis focuses on the late thirteenth-century narrative glazing scheme of the chapter house in York Minster and the political and religious context of its design. Created as an intrinsic and integrated part of one of the most elaborate and important buildings in the period, the glass has suffered interventions affecting both its appearance and the positions of its narrative panels. By examining the glass in the context of contemporary visual and textual material, it has been possible to reconstruct the original order of the panels and to identify the selection of episodes the lives of the saints, some for the first time. The study has demonstrated the extent to which the iconography was rooted in liturgy and theology relevant to the period which, in turn, reflected the priorities of a dominant group among the active members of Chapter for whose use the building was constructed and, by extension, the contemporary Church. Further, the glass shows strong Mariological themes which reflected features in the rest of the decorative scheme and the architecture of the chapter house, indicating that the glazing scheme may have been conceived as part of the architectural whole. The conclusions are supported by parallel research into the prosopography of the contemporary Chapter which additionally suggests that the conception of the programme may have had its roots in the baronial wars of the -

Frustrated Seeing: Scale, Visibility, and a Fifteenth-Century Portuguese Royal Monument Jessica Barker The Founder’s Chapel at the Dominican monastery of Santa Maria de Vitória, Batalha was a microcosm of the artistic splendours of fifteenth-century Europe (plate 1). Writing in 1623, the Dominican friar Luís de Sousa relates how its founder, King João I (d. 1433), brought the most celebrated architects and skilled stonemasons from foreign lands to build the monastic complex.1 Fifteenth-century documents record the presence of French, Flemish, English and German artists alongside their Portuguese counterparts.2 Although stripped of its rich furnishings and decoration in the nineteenth century, the chapel once boasted magnificent wall paintings and altarpieces, including a lost panel attributed to Rogier van der Weyden, which depicted the Virgin and Child with kneeling figures of Isabella of Portugal, duchess of Burgundy (João’s daughter) alongside her husband, Philip the Good and son, Charles the Bold.3 The centrepiece of the chapel, however, remains the magnificent polychromed limestone tomb of João I and his English wife Philippa of Lancaster (d. 1415), commissioned by the king in 1426 and complete by 1434 (plate 2). The finely- carved effigies of the king and queen were recently examined in an article by Joana Ramôa Melo and José da Silva, who interpreted the novelties of their costume and attributes as part of the self-fashioning of the new Avis dynasty, and identified the unusual depiction of João’s sagging flesh and lined skin as an early example of portrait likeness (plate 3).4 Yet this new awareness of the artistic virtuosity and innovative design of the effigies heightens an apparent paradox: the sculpted figures are extremely difficult to see in situ, resting upon a tomb chest that measures 170 cm from the base of the supporting lions to the chamfer of the chest.5 This essay focuses on the extraordinary height of the tomb chest and its implications for the relationship between the effigies and their viewers. -

For other uses, see Mary Magdalene (disambiguation). 1 Identity: Marys in the New Tes- Mary Magdalene (original Greek Μαρία ἡ tament Μαγδαληνή),[2] or Mary of Magdala and sometimes The Magdalene, is a religious figure in Christianity. She is often thought of as the second-most important woman in the New Testament after Mary, the mother of Jesus.[3] Mary Magdalene traveled with Jesus as one of his followers. She was present at Jesus’ two most important moments: the crucifixion and the resurrection.[4] Within the four Gospels she is named at least 12 times,[5] more than most of the apostles. Carol Ann Morrow views the Gospel references as describing her as courageous, brave enough to stand by Jesus in his hours of suffering, death and beyond.[3] The Gospel of Luke says seven demons had gone out of her,[Lk. 8:2] and the longer ending of Mark says Jesus had cast seven demons out from her.[Mk. 16:9] The “seven demons” may refer to a complex illness, not to any form of sinfulness.[6] She is most prominent in the narrative of the crucifixion of Jesus, at which she was present, and of the events on the morning after the immediately fol- lowing sabbath,[4] when, according to all four canonical Gospels,[Matthew 28:1–8] [Mark 16:9–10] [Luke 24:10] [John 20:18] she was either alone or as a member of a group of women the first to testify to the resurrection of Jesus.[7] John 20 and Mark 16:9 specifically name her as the first person to see Jesus after his resurrection. -

By considering the variations in the formulas used for each charter, the study considers what the charters were saying about power or wanted to project about the powers at play in the events they described. Through this, the thesis demonstrates that the power of lordship projected by such documents was of a very traditional nature throughout the period in which they were being produced. The count’s role on each occasion showed him to be a dominant force with a power of lordship composed of possession and rights of property ownership, but also intangible elements, including a sacral interest. By considering the context of events surrounding each charter of election, the thesis demonstrates that elements of this lordship could be more or less projected at different times in order that different statements might be made about the count. -

The saint was de- scribed as Pater Patriae – Father of the Fatherland – for the first time in his thirteenth-century Vita maior, and by the nineteenth century he was celebrated as the spiritual leader of national identi- ty and a symbol of independent Poland. But what did the concept of national identity entail in medieval Poland? And what role did St. Stanislaus’ cult play in its development? Royal and episcopal patronage promoted St. Stanislaus as Father of the Fatherland but can we say that there existed a wider understanding of the mean- ing and importance of the implications of the saint’s symbolic sta- tus? One of the ways to test this is to study the reception of the saint’s cult as manifested in the arts of medieval Cracow by com- paring various layers of artistic patronage, from kings and bishops to the civic authorities and merchants. -
