GODINE Maurits Biesbrouck1, Theodoor Goddeeris2 and Omer Steeno3 Summary Reiner Solenander (1524-1601) was a physician born in the Duchy of Cleves, who got his education at the University of Leuven and at various universities in Italy and in France. Back at home he became the court physician of William V and later of his son John William. In this article his life and works are discussed. A report on the death of Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564), noted down by Solenander in May 1566, one year and seven months after the death of Vesalius, is discussed in detail. Due to the importance of that document a copy of its first publication is given, together with a transcription and a translation as well. It indicates that Vesalius did not die in a shipwreck.     Holy Trinity Church Ingham - Norfolk HOLY TRINITY CHURCH INGHAM Ingham, written as “Hincham” in the Domesday Book, means “seated in a meadow”. Nothing of this period survives in the church, the oldest part of which now seems the stretch of walling at the south west corner of the chancel. This is made of whole flints, as against the knapped flint of the rest of the building, and contains traces of a blocked priest’s doorway. In spite of the herringboning of some of the rows of flints, it is probably not older than the thirteenth century. The rest of the body of the church was rebuilt in the years leading up to 1360.Work would have started with the chancel, but it is uncertain when it was begun. The tomb of Sir Oliver de Ingham, who died in 1343, is in the founder’s position on the north side of the chancel, and since the posture of the effigy is, as we shall see, already old fashioned for the date of death, it seems most likely that it was commissioned during his life time and that he rebuilt the chancel (which is Pevsner’s view), or that work began immediately after his death by his daughter Joan and her husband, Sir Miles Stapleton, who also rebuilt the nave. The Stapletons established a College of Friars of the Order of Holy Trinity and St Victor to serve Ingham, and also Walcot. The friars were installed in 1360, and originally consisted of a prior, a sacrist, who also acted as vicar of the parish, and two more brethren.

Auch wenn der Fußball-Sommer dieses Jahres aus guten Gründen längst in einer entfernten Erinnerung untergegangen ist, bleibt es bemerkenswert, mit welcher Gewissheit die Regio- nalzeitung den weiteren Verbleib der deutschen Mannschaft im Weltmeisterschaftsturnier sah. Wir alle wissen, wie sich die Geschichte fortschrieb. 25 Über den gegebenen Anlass hinaus steht dahinter eine Haltung, die in den vergangenen Jah- ren im Raum der Politik bedeutsam war. Was ein Land – und damit die Menschen dieses Landes – schaffen kann oder nicht, ist selbstverständlich nicht Gegenstand einer optimisti- schen Behauptung, sondern der täglichen Realität. Über der Frage, was unser Land tatsäch- 30 lich schaffen kann oder nicht, hat sich unsere Gesellschaft in den vergangenen Jahren tief gespalten. Vielfach beklagt und zurecht kritisiert wird dabei eine deutliche Verrohung des Umgangstones miteinander. Auch die Kirche bleibt in ihren Gliederungen davon nicht verschont.     Sachsen-Anhalt (Saxony-Anhalt) axony-Anhalt is a state in the Snortheast of the Federal Republic of Germany, surrounded by the states of Brandenburg (to the northeast and east), Saxony (to the southeast), Thuringia (to the southwest and south), and Lower Saxony (to the west and northwest). Alarge part of the state was formerly Area 20,445 km2 / part of Saxony which, at that time, 7,894 sq miles Population 2.7 million also included the often partitioned state of Anhalt. It became a free state of the German Empire in 1918. In 1945 it became a province, and, in 1947, the state of Saxony-Anhalt was created, only to be broken up into districts in 1952. In 1990 the state of Saxony- Anhalt was finally reestablished. In terms of its population density and area, Saxony-Anhalt falls in the middle among the federal states. The north is more agricultural in character; the south, where the population density is somewhat higher than in the north, is more industrialized. The climate is influenced by its proximity to the sea and shows considerable variations due to a landscape which alternates from medium altitude mountain ranges to wide valleys. The north has abundant rainfall while the valleys of the rivers Saale, Unstrut, and Bode are among the driest areas in Germany. The state stretches along both sides of the River Elbe. The partially flat, partially gently rolling north with its great pine 282 forests (Altmark) is part of the north German lowlands. To the south, medium-sized mountain ranges begin. The highest mountain is the Brocken (1,142 m) in the eastern part of the Harz mountains.

    "Wherein Taylors may finde out new fashions"1 Constructing the Costume Research Image Library (CRIL) Dr Jane Malcolm-Davies Textile Conservation Centre, Winchester School of Art 1) Introduction The precise construction of 16th century dress in the British Isles remains something of a conundrum although there are clues to be found in contemporary evidence. Primary sources for the period fall into three main categories: pictorial (art works of the appropriate period), documentary (written works of the period such as wardrobe warrants, personal inventories, personal letters and financial accounts), and archaeological (extant garments in museum collections). Each has their limitations. These three sources provide a fragmentary picture of the garments worn by men and women in the 16th century. There is a need for further sources of evidence to add to the partial record of dress currently available to scholars and, increasingly, those who wish to reconstruct dress for display or wear, particularly for educational purposes. The need for accessible and accurate information on Tudor dress is therefore urgent. Sources which shed new light on the construction of historic dress and provide a comparison or contrast with extant research are invaluable. This paper reports a pilot project which attempted to link the dead, their dress and their documents to create a visual research resource for 16th century costume. 2) The research problem There is a fourth primary source of information that has considerable potential but as yet has been largely overlooked by costume historians. Church effigies are frequently life-size, detailed and dressed in contemporary clothes. They offer a further advantage in the portrayal of many middle class who do not appear in 1 pictorial sources in as great a number as aristocrats.

This is the ninth international quadrennial conference of HNA and the first on the campus of Ghent University. HNA will move to a triennial format with our next conference in 2021. HNA is extremely grateful to Ghent University, Groeningemuseum Bruges, St. John’s Hospital Bruges, and Het Grootseminarie Bruges for placing lecture halls at our disposal and for hosting workshops. HNA would like to express its gratitude in particular to Prof. dr. Maximiliaan Martens and Prof. dr. Koenraad Jonckheere for the initiative and the negotiation of these arrangements.     ch1.qxd 10/18/1999 2:02 PM Page 1 CHAPTER 1 Lapo’s Life and Work In the years that preceded the more or less permanent reentry of Pope Eugenius IV into Rome, the Renaissance humanist movement was in the middle of an interesting phase. At that time a large component of its members consisted of intellectuals who lacked ‹xed institutional places. Humanism—this new ars whose curricular focus was the studia humani- tatis—had still to ‹nd its place in society and was dependent largely on patrons. One practitioner of this new art was the Florentine Lapo da Cas- tiglionchio the Younger, who died in 1438 at the age of thirty-three. One of his most interesting cultural bequests to us is a treatise that he wrote in the year of his death, entitled De curiae commodis, or On the Bene‹ts of the Curia. In this dialogue, Lapo offers us a portrait of the papal curia that is written elegantly, learnedly, earnestly, and even angrily. It is a human document that is alive with information not only for intellectual historians but for social and cultural historians as well. The goal of this study is to discuss this dialogue in its intellectual and social contexts. A critical edition of the Latin text along with an annotated English transla- tion follows the discussion. This ‹rst chapter offers an examination of Lapo’s life and work, fol- lowed by a brief look at the historiography on the dialogue. Chapter 2 deals with the literary context of the dialogue and examines a compli- cated passage on the virtues, which I believe can serve as an interpretive key for the piece as a whole.
