    ABSTRACT ONE MAN’S STRUGGLE: PIUS IX AND THE CHANGE IN PAPAL AUTHORITY IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY Andrew Paul Dinovo This thesis examines papal authority in the nineteenth century in three sections. The first examines papal issues within the world at large, specifically those that focus on the role of the Church within the political state. The second section concentrates on the authority of Pius IX on the Italian peninsula in the mid-nineteenth century. The third and final section of the thesis focuses on the inevitable loss of the Papal States within the context of the Vatican Council of 1869-1870. Select papal encyclicals from 1859 to 1871 and the official documents of the Vatican Council of 1869-1870 are examined in light of their relevance to the change in the nature of papal authority. Supplementing these changes is a variety of seminal secondary sources from noted papal scholars. Ultimately, this thesis reveals that this change in papal authority became a point of contention within the Church in the twentieth century.     YEARS OF STORM & STRESS Joseph Matt & Americanism with a commentary and notes by Paul Likoudis on Matt's “A Centenary of Catholic Life in Minnesota” published by The Wanderer, January – August 2012 From January to August 2012, The Wanderer published, and offered commentary, on a remarkable series of 36 articles written by this newspaper's long-serving editor Joseph Matt (1877-1966) in 1950-'51 on Americanism, “the German question,” and subjects related to “Cahenslyism,” named after the German Catholic layman Peter Paul Cahensly, who devoted himself to the aid of German-Catholic immigrants. In this series of articles, Joseph Matt told the German-American Catholics' side of the story of what the late Monsignor George Kelly would call the “Battle for the American Church”; i.e. German Catholic opposition to the nascent modernism in Americanism and the Americanist hierarchy's determination to assimilate German Catholics into the American melting pot. As a sort of prelude to this series, we will enter the field of German-American Catholic historiography with some snips from a paper read by University of Chicago historian Kathleen Neils Conzen at the first Edmund Spevack Memorial Lecture at Harvard University, November 7, 2003, which touches on many of the issues we will see Joseph Matt discussing in that series of 36 articles sixty years ago, as he reflected back on the battles of the of the late 19th and early 20th centuries: “....Catholicism has long seemed like an embarrassing guest at the table of American historiography,” observed Conzen, “best ignored in the hope that it will not make a disturbing fuss.

Dominowały jednak różnorodne wyznania protestanckie. Pierwsi katolicy przybyli do Ameryki Północnej wraz z Hiszpanami w 1513 r., rozpoczynając pracę misyjną wśród rdzennych mieszkańców. Jednak brytyjscy koloniści, anglikanie i purytanie, przenieśli na grunt amerykański także silny, mające swoje źródło w refor- macji, antykatolicyzm. Kościół katolicki nie był główną instytucją religijną w Ameryce Północnej: na początku rewolucji amerykańskiej katolicy stanowili zaledwie 1% obywa- teli i tylko stan Maryland był w większości katolicki. Szybki rozwój Kościoła rzymskiego w USA rozpoczął się na początku XX wieku, wraz z kolejnymi falami imigracji z krajów katolickich w Europie. W 1928 r. Al Smith był pierwszym katolickim kandydatem na pre- zydenta, a w 1961 r. cieszący się dużą popularnością katolik John F. Kennedy został pre- zydentem Stanów Zjednoczonych. Współcześnie obserwuje się dynamiczny rozwój ka- tolicyzmu i zanik postaw antykatolickich, wiele instytucji publicznych czy społecznych zostało założonych przez katolików, katolicy stali się też ważną częścią amerykańskiego dyskursu intelektualnego. Współpraca dyplomatyczna prezydenta Ronalda Reagana i pa- pieża Jana Pawła II przyczyniła się do upadku komunizmu w Europie. Andrien ____________________ Adviser History Graduate Program ABSTRACT The Enlightenment, or the "Age of Reason," had a profound impact on eighteenth-century Europe, especially on its religion, producing both outright atheism and powerful movements of religious reform within the Church. The former—culminating in the French Revolution—has attracted many scholars; the latter has been relatively neglected. By looking at "enlightened" attempts to reform popular religious practices in Spain, my project examines the religious fervor of people whose story usually escapes historical attention. "Fiestas and Fervor" reveals the capacity of the Enlightenment to reform the Catholicism of ordinary Spaniards, examining how enlightened or Reform Catholicism affected popular piety in the diocese of Barcelona. This study focuses on the efforts of an exceptional figure of Reform Catholicism and Enlightenment Spain—Josep Climent i Avinent, Bishop of Barcelona from 1766- 1775. The program of “Enlightenment” as sponsored by the Spanish monarchy was one that did not question the Catholic faith and that championed economic progress and the advancement of the sciences, primarily benefiting the elite of Spanish society. In this context, Climent is noteworthy not only because his idea of “Catholic Enlightenment” opposed that sponsored by the Spanish monarchy but also because his was one that implicitly condemned the present hierarchy of the Catholic Church and explicitly ii advocated popular enlightenment and the creation of a more independent “public sphere” in Spain by means of increased literacy and education of the masses.

The theme of the Working Group’s sixth session was “The First Vatican Council – its historical context and the meaning of its definitions”. It continued the series of discussions examining the doctrine of primacy in the context of the concrete exercise of primacy. Wachtel 2013 Abstract My dissertation connects the Jesuit missions in Canada to the global Jesuit missionary project in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries by exploring the impact of French religious politics on the organizing of the first Canadian mission, established at Port Royal, Acadia, in 1611. After the Wars of Religion, Gallican Catholics blamed the Society for the violence between French Catholics and Protestants, portraying Jesuits as underhanded usurpers of royal authority in the name of the Pope—even accusing the priests of advocating regicide. As a result, both Port Royal’s settlers and its proprietor, Jean de Poutrincourt, never trusted the missionaries, and the mission collapsed within two years. After Virginia pirates destroyed Port Royal, Poutrincourt drew upon popular anti- Jesuit stereotypes to blame the Jesuits for conspiring with the English. Father Pierre Biard, one of the missionaries, responded with his 1616 Relation de la Nouvelle France, which described Port Royal’s Indians and narrated the Jesuits’ adventures in North America, but served primarily as a defense of their enterprise. Religio-political infighting profoundly influenced the interaction between Indians and Europeans in the earliest years of Canadian settlement.

Doll 1 The non-Roman catholicity of the Anglican liturgical tradition, which appeals so much to the Old Catholics, also provides a door for Roman Catholics to a half-forgotten Catholic patrimony. One of the most remarkable features of the pontificate of Benedict XVI was his determination to recover some of richness of liturgical tradition that he believed had been lost in the reforms since Vatican II.1 In 2007 he declared in the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum that both the Novus Ordo post-Vatican II rite of the Mass and the 1962 revision of the Tridentine rite were legitimate forms of the one Roman Rite, thereby breaking at a stroke the tradition that there should be only one version of the Roman Rite for the universal Church.

Sanders All rights reserved 2 Abstract The French Revolution presented the Catholic Church with her greatest political crisis since the Reformation. The crises presented by the Revolution (including: the Civil Constitution of the Clergy, the death of the king, the Reign of Terror, war throughout Europe, and the imprisonment of the pope) also gave new urgency the theological problems of divine providence, the permission of evil, and the nature of predestination. However, even before the Revolution, such issues were at the heart of intra-Catholic theological debates. Beginning with the De Auxiliis controversy, and continuing with the growth of Jansenism and the Catholic Enlightenment, ideas of providence and predestination were hardly settled before the Revolution. But, such debates shed light on how theologians attempted to understand the Revolution. Two prominent Catholic thinkers in the wake of the Revolution were Joseph de Maistre and Félicité Lamennais. Both saw the Revolution as the natural result of theological errors and in keeping with divine providence. Maistre, a convinced Molinist, provides the most robust account of the Revolution as a felix culpa, an event that God permitted to happen in order to cleanse the Church of laxity and error, punish France for theological errors, and rid the world of Enlightenment philosophy.

    York Minster’s Chapter House and its Painted Glass Narratives Volume 1 of 3 Ann Hilary Moxon PhD University of York History of Art December 2017 Abstract This thesis focuses on the late thirteenth-century narrative glazing scheme of the chapter house in York Minster and the political and religious context of its design. Created as an intrinsic and integrated part of one of the most elaborate and important buildings in the period, the glass has suffered interventions affecting both its appearance and the positions of its narrative panels. By examining the glass in the context of contemporary visual and textual material, it has been possible to reconstruct the original order of the panels and to identify the selection of episodes the lives of the saints, some for the first time. The study has demonstrated the extent to which the iconography was rooted in liturgy and theology relevant to the period which, in turn, reflected the priorities of a dominant group among the active members of Chapter for whose use the building was constructed and, by extension, the contemporary Church. Further, the glass shows strong Mariological themes which reflected features in the rest of the decorative scheme and the architecture of the chapter house, indicating that the glazing scheme may have been conceived as part of the architectural whole. The conclusions are supported by parallel research into the prosopography of the contemporary Chapter which additionally suggests that the conception of the programme may have had its roots in the baronial wars of the
