Grace Church Stamford welcomes you to our Sunday gathering where our aim is to meet Jesus Christ by His Word and Spirit November 4, 2018 AD Called Together

The Lord Jesus who calls us to worship him today is the same Jesus who refused the temptation to worship the evil one. Rather than receive the glorious kingdoms of this world, he endured the shame of the cross, and today is Lord of lords and King of kings. Now are gathered in him all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, glory, and power. With the saints of all ages we say, “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!”

To Him be the glory for all He has done Praise to the Father who gave us His Son To Him be the glory He's coming again A ransom for many He bled and died And all of the sadness will come to an end Then rose in victory enthroned on high Oh what a reunion the bride and her King Forever we'll praise Him forever we'll sing To Him be the glory in heaven and earth (Chorus) All of creation is shouting His worth The saints and the angels all live to proclaim Bridge Glory, glory to our God The wonderful story the glorious Name Glory, glory to our God (2x) (Chorus 2x) Chorus Oh look and see our God and celebrate

The power of the cross and the empty grave And now we're free let the redeemed Lift up your heads, Oh look and see our God!

Living Hope Brian Johnson, Phil Wickham|© 2018 Phil Wickham Music| CCLI License # 11280377

How great the chasm that lay between us How high the mountain I could not climb In desperation I turned to heaven And spoke Your name into the night Chorus Hallelujah praise the One who set me free Then through the darkness Your loving-kindness Hallelujah death has lost its grip on me Tore through the shadows of my soul You have broken every chain there’s The work is finished the end is written salvation in Your name Jesus Christ my living hope Jesus Christ my living hope

Who could imagine so great a mercy Then came the morning that sealed the promise What heart could fathom such boundless grace Your buried body began to breathe The God of ages stepped down from glory Out of the silence the roaring Lion To wear my sin and bear my shame Declared the grave has no claim on me The cross has spoken I am forgiven Jesus Yours is the victory! (Chorus 2x) The King of kings calls me His own Beautiful Savior I’m Yours forever Jesus Christ my living hope

Hearing God’s Word Genesis 3:1-13 This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Confessing Together

Almighty God, you have raised Jesus from death to life and crowned him Lord of all. We confess that we have not bowed before him or acknowledged his rule in our lives. We have gone along with the ways of the world and failed to give him glory. Forgive us and raise us from sin, that we may be your faithful people, obeying the commands of our Lord Jesus Christ, who rules the world and is head of the church, his body. Amen.

God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Thanks be to God.

I see Your face in ev'ry sunrise The colors of the morning are inside Your eyes The world awakens in the light of the day I look up to the sky and say You're beautiful

I see Your power in the moonlit night When we arrive at eternity's shore Where planets are in motion and galaxies are bright Where death is just a memory and tears are no more We are amazed in the light of the stars We'll enter in as the wedding bells ring It's all proclaiming who You are Your bride will come together and we'll sing You're beautiful You're beautiful

I see You there hanging on a tree Bridge Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah You bled and then You died (3x) (Verse 4) And then You rose again for me Now You are sitting on Your heavenly throne Soon we will be coming home You're beautiful

Hearing God’s Word Proclaimed

Communing Together Invitation * Our Savior Jesus Christ has ordained and instituted this Holy Supper to nourish and sustain those who are born again and grafted into his family: his church. Christ has instituted an earthly and visible bread as the sacrament of his body and wine as the sacrament of his blood. Just as truly as we take and hold the sacraments in our hands and eat and drink them in our mouths, by which our life is sustained, so truly we receive into our souls, for our spiritual life, the true body and true blood of Christ, our only Savior. We receive these by faith, which is the hand and mouth of our souls. The banquet is a spiritual table at which Christ communicates himself to us with all his benefits. By the use of this holy sacrament we are moved to a fervent love of God and our neighbors.

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right for us to give thanks and praise.

Countless throngs of angels stand before you to serve you night and day, and, beholding the glory of your presence, they offer you unceasing praise. Joining with them, and giving voice to every creature under heaven, we glorify your name and lift our voices in joyful praise: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are fully of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Communion The Lord Jesus, on the night of his arrest, took bread and after giving thanks, broke it and gave it to his disciples saying, ‘Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ In the same way, he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant sealed in my blood, shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this in remembrance of me. Every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the saving death of the risen Lord until he comes.

Prayer of Thanksgiving Loving God, we thank you that you have fed us in this sacrament, united us with Christ, and given us a foretaste of the heavenly banquet in your eternal kingdom. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

* Prayer for those searching for truth Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. While I find that hard to believe, help me to believe your claims. Guide me, teach me, open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. * Prayer of belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn away from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen

Singing Together Jesus I My Cross Have Taken David Paxton, Henry Francis Lyte |Public Domain| CCLI # 11280377

Jesus, I my cross have taken all to leave and follow Thee Destitute despised forsaken, Thou from hence my all shall be Perish every fond ambition, all I’ve sought or hoped or known Yet how rich is my condition. God and heaven are still my own.

Go, then earthly fame and treasure come disaster scorn and pain In Thy service pain is pleasure with Thy favor loss is gain I have called Thee Abba Father I have stayed my heart on Thee Storms may howl and clouds may gather all must work for good to me

Hast then on from grace to glory armed by faith and winged by prayer Heavens eternal day’s before Thee God’s own hand shall guide me there Soon shall close the earthly mission, swift shall pass thy pilgrim days Hope soon change to glad fruition, faith to sight and prayer to praise.

Soon shall close the earthly mission, swift shall pass thy pilgrim days Hope soon change to glad fruition, faith to sight and prayer to praise.

Sermon Series: The Excellent Life

Spiritual Confidence Philippians 3:1-11

Introduction

1. Risky search for confidence

2. Ridiculous search for confidence

3. Real search for confidence

Application

What is our only comfort in life and death? That I am not my own, but belong— body and soul, in life and in death— to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven; in fact, all things must work together for my salvation. Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him. – Heidelberg Catechism Q&A 1.
