Moravian Songbook 1 ‘Listen’ Adapted from a Song by Pete and Maura Kennedy Lyrics by Rt. Rev. Chris Giesler, and Tina Giesler Listen, to the silent spaces, in between the phrases can’t you hear the song? Listen, let the stillness ground you, God’s light is all around you, though the night is long. Our Lamb has conquered let us follow him. In all things love is what he taught us to do. Listen, in the sacred places can’t you hear the traces of an ancient song? Listen, as we trace the footsteps of the ones who gave us, this the Church we serve. Sing hallelujah, let us praise the Lord. Sing with a cheerful voice, exalt our God. Listen, to the Morning Star, Cheer the nations near and far, with God’s light divine. Listen, let your love be glowing, as on one stem growing, we are truly thine. Our Lamb has conquered let us follow him. In all things love is what he taught us to do. Listen, in the sacred places, Can’t you hear the traces of an ancient song? Listen to the silent spaces, in between the phrases, can’t you hear the song? Can’t you hear the song? Can’t you hear? Listen. The tune of this song is by the Kennedys. Lyrics for Verses 1,2, 3, 6, & 7 are original to the Kennedy’s song. Lyrics to the bridges, and verses 4 & 5 were added for Convo 2007 by Chris and Tina Giesler using familiar Moravian song lyrics and phrases. © Pete and Maura Kennedy, 2005. • The Knucklehead Gospels
The Knucklehead Gospels A Simple Faith 2021 By Arnulfo D. Ayala 1 The Knucklehead Gospels A Simple Faith 2021 Foreword I was ordained a permanent deacon in the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Angelo, Texas in 2004, but I was introduced to prison ministry in the fall of 2000, working as a volunteer at a Kairos retreat at the Lynaugh Unit in Ft Stockton, Texas. From my first visit to the prison, I knew this is where God called me to serve. Many people have no knowledge of or experience with the prison system, so they have a great misconception of the individuals who reside behind those walls. Some may think that people in prison have no value and don’t deserve a second chance. I can firmly attest that in ministering to our incarcerated brothers and sisters, I have witnessed the power of God working through many of these gifted humans. It has been transformational for me and has helped me to deepen my relationship with Christ. I am blessed to be able to call them my brothers and sisters. I first met, Arnulfo, the author of this book in 2016 while serving in prison ministry for the Archdiocese of San Antonio. He, along with a core group of devoted Catholic men, are in the maximum-security prison. They have each had a profound experience at a Kolbe Catholic retreat and decided to dedicate their lives to Christ: praying, studying, and working tirelessly to be better men and to inspire their fellow inmates to do the same. I soon realized that Arnulfo, a self-confessed Knucklehead, had the talent, the faith, the experience, and the humility to help other incarcerated men find a way to walk in God’s light in this dark place.

FINDING GRACE IN THE CONCERT HALL: COMMUNITY AND MEANING AMONG SPRINGSTEEN FANS By LINDA RANDALL A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY On Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS In the Department of Religion December 2008 Winston Salem, North Carolina Approved By: Lynn Neal, PhD. Advisor _____________________________ Examining Committee: Jeanne Simonelli, Ph.D. Chair _____________________________ LeRhonda S. Manigault, Ph.D _____________________________ ii Acknowledgements First and foremost, my thanks go out to Drs. Neal and Simonelli for encouraging me to follow my passion and my heart. Dr. Neal helped me realize a framework within which I could explore my interests, and Dr. Simonelli kept my spirits alive so I could nurse the project along. My concert-going partner in crime, cruisin’tobruce, also deserves my gratitude, sharing expenses and experiences with me all over the eastern seaboard as well as some mid-America excursions. She tolerated me well, right up until the last time I forgot the tickets. I also must recognize the persistent assistance I received from my pal and companion Zero, my Maine Coon cat, who spent hours hanging over my keyboard as I typed. I attribute all typos and errors to his help, and thank him for the opportunity to lay the blame at his paws. And lastly, my thanks and gratitude goes out to Mr. Bruce Frederick Springsteen, a man of heart and of conscience who constantly keeps me honest and aware that “it ain’t no sin to be glad you’re alive (Badlands).”

  • The Complete Stories
The Complete Stories by Franz Kafka a.b.e-book v3.0 / Notes at the end Back Cover : "An important book, valuable in itself and absolutely fascinating. The stories are dreamlike, allegorical, symbolic, parabolic, grotesque, ritualistic, nasty, lucent, extremely personal, ghoulishly detached, exquisitely comic. numinous and prophetic." -- New York Times "The Complete Stories is an encyclopedia of our insecurities and our brave attempts to oppose them." -- Anatole Broyard Franz Kafka wrote continuously and furiously throughout his short and intensely lived life, but only allowed a fraction of his work to be published during his lifetime. Shortly before his death at the age of forty, he instructed Max Brod, his friend and literary executor, to burn all his remaining works of fiction. Fortunately, Brod disobeyed. Page 1 The Complete Stories brings together all of Kafka's stories, from the classic tales such as "The Metamorphosis," "In the Penal Colony" and "The Hunger Artist" to less-known, shorter pieces and fragments Brod released after Kafka's death; with the exception of his three novels, the whole of Kafka's narrative work is included in this volume. The remarkable depth and breadth of his brilliant and probing imagination become even more evident when these stories are seen as a whole. This edition also features a fascinating introduction by John Updike, a chronology of Kafka's life, and a selected bibliography of critical writings about Kafka. I’m an assistant manager at Walmart and usually when I’m not working or hanging out with friends I go shopping or just drive around to see new places. Amber Hook Amber Hook, 29 years old, is a resident of Milesburg, PA. Presently, she is a hair stylist at SmartSyle Salon in the North Atherton WalMart. Amber has been singing since the young age of 2 years old. Growing up, Amber listened to Country music, and to this day she is still a fan. Country is her karaoke “go to”. She also enjoys a wide variety of other musical genres, including rock and pop. Amber's musical inspiration doesn't come from any one artist, but it comes from within her. “My musical inspiration comes from how I feel, and if I can relate to a song and put myself in it”. Amber enjoys singing because, in her words, “Most of the time I can't tell you how I feel, but I can sing you a song. Most of the time, it hits the nail on the head!” As to what she hopes to gain from being a part of the competition, Amber hopes to grow more as an artist, how to breathe better, and how to open up more.

ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Hip-hop, Streetdance, and the Remaking of the Global Filipino by Jeffrey Lorenzo Perillo Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance University of California, Los Angeles, 2013 Professor Susan Leigh Foster, Committee Co-Chair Professor Victor Bascara, Committee Co-Chair New York-based African American, Latino, and Caribbean immigrant youth of the 1960s and early 1970s gave life to one of the world's major contemporary cultural movements: Hip-hop. Initially misunderstood as a faddish form of Black male musical expression, Hip-hop's cultural resistance practices were quickly recognized as four core elements (emceeing, turntablism, graffiti art, and b-boying/b-girling). In the global context, Hip-hop has generated scholarly discourse that points to either the cultural globalization of American Blackness or a "global village." My project interrupts this conversation and focuses on the unique, multi-site cultural history of Filipino identity as constituted through practitioners of Hip-Hop dance. My work argues that a community of Filipinos, situated in different geo-political loci—Berkeley, California, Honolulu, Hawai‘i, and Manila, Philippines—configure prevailing concepts of Hip-hop while remaking conditions of ! ii dispossession and displacement in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.

AUTUMN 2007 "There's no money in poetry, but then there's no poetry in money, either." ~Robert Graves About the Poets Page 7 Credits Page 9 Big Thicket Song #3 Big Thicket Song #1 For Jame Byrd, Jr. Seven miles from the highway, down trails truckling through cypress trees— Blacktop yellow stripe down the middle the sun a hint of fire edging the leaves— they dragged a living man down a family of beavers builds a home. Never down until they dragged a dead man broken into pieces enough to participate from the bank of tooth- and tail-crafted pond, I shed on either side, tall pines, planted shirt and pants, strip to bare truth every ten years pulped after growth and wade into brown water, mists tall enough to mill the paper to publish the obituary still rising in the stippled day. Toes squish through ripe mud, bubbles ooze up. these woods have a dead man in them Sink down, descend days and years, broken shredded into black asphalt into first light. Sunlight, banding in waves, head legs torso scattered like needles deep woods whisper here breaks into thin beams between leaves and falling, falling, splatters knees a thousand people drive over red specks and belly, chest, penis, pale buttocks, spread droplets of raging tears but paints the years. Only the sounds a dead man’s dying cannot roll dark thicket into shining light of splashing, rap of a woodpecker on dry bark, rustle of armadillos rooting through damp leaves, breath heavy, alien. So and, again, so. A white heron, immense in beauty, © 2007 H.
