In Deuteronomy 6:7, Moses instructed the parents of the children of Israel to “teach them diligently”. In Proverbs 22:6, we are told “to train up a child in the way he should go.” Moses makes it clear in Deuteronomy 6:1, we are to learn and teach His “commandments, statutes, and judg ments.” In fact Deuteronomy 11:1317, makes it clear, if we learn and are obedient to His commandments, we will be blessed. • Protection and Transmission of Chinese Nanyin by Prof
Protection and Transmission of Chinese Nanyin by Prof. Wang, Yaohua Fujian Normal University, China Intangible cultural heritage is the memory of human historical culture, the root of human culture, the ‘energic origin’ of the spirit of human culture and the footstone for the construction of modern human civilization. Ever since China joined the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2004, it has done a lot not only on cognition but also on action to contribute to the protection and transmission of intangible cultural heritage. Please allow me to expatiate these on the case of Chinese nanyin(南音, southern music). I. The precious multi-values of nanyin decide the necessity of protection and transmission for Chinese nanyin. Nanyin, also known as “nanqu” (南曲), “nanyue” (南乐), “nanguan” (南管), “xianguan” (弦管), is one of the oldest music genres with strong local characteristics. As major musical genre, it prevails in the south of Fujian – both in the cities and countryside of Quanzhou, Xiamen, Zhangzhou – and is also quite popular in Taiwan, Hongkong, Macao and the countries of Southeast Asia inhabited by Chinese immigrants from South Fujian. The music of nanyin is also found in various Fujian local operas such as Liyuan Opera (梨园戏), Gaojia Opera (高甲戏), line-leading puppet show (提线木偶戏), Dacheng Opera (打城戏) and the like, forming an essential part of their vocal melodies and instrumental music. As the intangible cultural heritage, nanyin has such values as follows. I.I. Academic value and historical value Nanyin enjoys a reputation as “a living fossil of the ancient music”, as we can trace its relevance to and inheritance of Chinese ancient music in terms of their musical phenomena and features of musical form.

Mothers weep And fathers worry, But only war Can bring me glory. Emeralds shine And rubies mourn, But there’s no mine For unicorn’s horn. Axes chop And hammers swing, My heart stops, But war cries ring. Gemmer Army Marching Chant Lyrics circa 990 Craft Era Composer unknown CHAPTER 1 Graveyard. That was the first word that came to Claire Martinson’s mind as she took in the ruined city ahead of her. The second and third words were: Absolutely not. There was no way this could be the city they’d been seeking—the Gem- mer school where Claire would learn how to perfect her magic. Where she was going to figure out how to bring unicorns back to Arden. This was . “A ghost town,” Claire whispered. “Are you sure it’s Stonehaven?” Sophie asked, and Claire was glad to hear some apprehension in her older sister’s voice. If Sophie, who at the age of thirteen had already explored a magical land by herself, defeated a mysterious illness, and passed sixth grade, wasn’t feeling great about their final desti- nation, then maybe Claire wasn’t such a coward after all. “It looks so . .” “Creepy?” Claire offered. Sophie tightened the ribbon on her ponytail. “Desolate,” she finished. Desolate, indeed. Stone houses stood abandoned, their win- dows as empty as the sockets of a skull.

  • A Shaman, a Sherpa, and a Healer: a Post-Intentional
A SHAMAN, A SHERPA, AND A HEALER: A POST-INTENTIONAL PHENOMENOLOGY OF SONGWRITING by BRIAN E. KUMM (Under the Direction of Corey W. Johnson) ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to explore the phenomenon of songwriting. Through a series of in depth interviews, three songwriters provided rich descriptions of their lived experiences with the phenomenon. Post-intentional phenomenology was used as the primary guiding theoretical framework for this study, which negotiated the tenets of both phenomenology and poststructuralism. Songwriting was described in terms of portaling, everesting, and gravitating-levitating and was revealed as a complex phenomenon of cathartic and transcendent experiences. The findings highlight the need for unstructured, expressive, and artistic leisure, which can be transformative in times of personal or social unrest. • 12 the Way.Pdf
Hi Soulful Song Lovers and Story Tellers, This is the twelfth Friday PDF that we’re emailing or posting on the webpage about songs, stories, storytelling, community, or personal/spiritual growth until we meet again. Sharing our stories, beliefs, and experiences around a theme suggested by a song is a pathway to our higher, better selves. Some who have been exemplars of what this journey could look like—Jesus, Lao Tzu, and others—have had the path they followed/emblazoned referred to as “The Way.” When we seek or walk The Way, sometimes we have company (a mentors, a book, etc.) but in the final analysis, in the words of the song “Lonesome Valley,” “Nobody here can walk it for you, You gotta walk it by yourself.” Some of the people who shine their light so we can find The Way include singer/songwriter Tift Merritt, Thoreau, Rachel Naomi Remen, Sophia Lyon Fahs, John Steinbeck, James Baldwin, Barbara Holmes, and more. If you’d like to get these PDFs emailed to you, register with Jessica Pond, [email protected]. We sorely miss you and your stories. We miss hugs and laughter and coffee/tea with you. We know these mailings are no substitute for meeting face-to-face, but hope that they, in some small way, may fill the gap until we meet again. Take the spirit of Soulful Songs and Stories with you wherever you go; share it, and we hope to see you all, healthy and happy, sooner rather than later. Namasté, Alice and Steve The Way / Lonesome Valley The idea for this week’s piece came from Eliza grimages leading to the shrine of the apostle Saint Borné,

However, scholars quoting this article should use the print version or give the URL.] Journal of the Adventist Theological Society, 7/2 (Autumn 1996): 125-141. Article copyright © 1996 by Norman R. Gulley. Good News About the Time of Trouble Norman R. Gulley School of Religion Southern Adventist University Near the beginning of a recent semester a student blurted out in my “Last Day Events” class, “I want to go to heaven via the resurrection!” Another stu- dent told me, “I don’t want to run to the mountains in the great time of trouble!” In an anonymous questionnaire taken by students in Last Day Events classes at Southern Adventist University the following data surfaced: 1. 49% worried about the present pre-advent judgment. 2. 56% were scared of last day events. 3. 41% would rather die than go through last day events. 4. 37% believed we gain entrance to heaven through Christ’s sacrifice plus our human works. 5. 50% were not sure if they would be saved if they died today. 6. 88% claimed they know Christ as a personal friend. This is a stunning revelation, when you realize these students represent a cross section of Seventh-day Adventist youth, from around the States and other countries, studying a variety of majors. These may be among the final genera- tion, yet do not want to be.
