Croatia and “Ethnic Cleansing”
Croatia and “Ethnic Cleansing” Croatia and “Ethnic Cleansing” Akiko Shimizu Introduction There is a computer set up in the permanent Holocaust exhibition in London’s Imperial War Museum, in which, along with Jews, homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses and the mentally disabled, “hundreds of thousands” of Serbian residents of the “Independent State of Croatia” (NDH) are listed as victims of genocide. However, in the permanent exhibition dealing with genocide, the massacre of the Serbs earns no mention. It appears that the museum accepts the massacres as fact, but their displays are seemingly set up so as to attract little attention. As this style of exhibition demonstrates, while there are not many who do not know of Auschwitz, there are very few who know of “Jasenovac”. “Jasenovac” is the name for a system of incarceration chambers and concentration camps which existed in the “Independent State of Croatia”. After World War II, it was estimated that between 600,000 and 700,000 people died in this, the largest of the incarceration facilities in Croatia. In the 1990s too, the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, a major German daily newspaper, gave an estimate of 500,000, while the Holocaust Studies Centre in Washington’s Holocaust Memorial Museum estimates that “at least 250,000” Serbians were killed by the “Croatian authorities” between 1941 and 1943. 1) However, the Republic of Croatia, which gained its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, has not acknowledged this massacre. In April 1991 (the fiftieth anniversary of Germany’s invasion of Yugoslavia), Tudjman, who became later the first President of Croatia, declared the number of victims to be 30,000. -
Crimes in the Jasenovac Camp Zagreb 1946
Crimes in the Jasenovac Camp Zagreb 1946 The State Commission of Croatia for the Investigation of the Crimes of the Occupation Forces and their Collaborators translated by Sinisa Djuric i INTRODUCTION The third largest concentration camp in World War II, the Jasenovac con- centration camp, is also the least known about in the world, and for most of the people in western countries unknown. A suppressed chapter of history indeed. For over fifty years there were only a handful of references for Jasenovac in Western museums and books about the Holocaust and all attempts to introduce this unprecedented torture place to wider number of people have been welcomed by a barrage of denial, deception, deliberate distortion of facts and arbitrary interpreta- tion of parts of documents. Such behavior of revisionist historians has been suc- cessful primarily because of the lack of documents and literature about Jasenovac in English. The only way to prevent misinterpretation is to present the available documents in complete form with as faithful a translation as possible. Certainly one of the most important of such documents is the report of the State Commission of Croatia for the Investigation of the Crimes of the Occupation Forces and their Collaborators from 1946. The systematic approach, with field research combined with many consistent testimonies of witnesses of three different nationalities (Croats, Jews and Serbs), along with forensic expert opinion provide a comprehensive insight into the most brutal of all Nazi death camps. Regarding the veracity of the document: The only direct criticism of this doc- ument came from mathematician Josip Pecaric, who questioned the number of vic- tims estimated in this document. -

For four decades the Purdue University Press series in Central European Studies has enriched our knowledge of the region by producing scholarly monographs, advanced surveys, and select collections of the highest quality. Since its founding, the series has been the only English-language series devoted primarily to the lands and peoples of the Habsburg Empire, its successor states, and those areas lying along its immediate periphery. Among its broad range of international scholars are several authors whose engagement in public policy reflects the pressing challenges that confront the successor states. Život I Djelovanje Vjekoslava Maksa Luburića Do Proglašenja Nezavisne Države Hrvatske
ŽIVOT I DJELOVANJE VJEKOSLAVA MAKSA LUBURIĆA DO PROGLAŠENJA NEZAVISNE DRŽAVE HRVATSKE Gordan KARLIĆ UDK: 94(497.5):929 Luburic, V. M. Višeslav ARALICA Izvorni znanstveni rad Zagreb, Republika Hrvatska Prihvaćeno: 11. svibnja 2015. Bosnia-Herzegovina Social Briefing: Troubles with Chetniks, Ustashe and Banal Lies Ivica Bakota
ISSN: 2560-1601 Vol. 16, No. 3 (BH) March 2019 Bosnia-Herzegovina social briefing: Troubles with Chetniks, Ustashe and banal lies Ivica Bakota 1052 Budapest Petőfi Sándor utca 11. +36 1 5858 690 Kiadó: Kína-KKE Intézet Nonprofit Kft. [email protected] Szerkesztésért felelős személy: Chen Xin Kiadásért felelős személy: Huang Ping china-cee.eu 2017/01 Troubles with Chetniks, Ustashe and banal lies Banal and blatant lies A main problem with blatant lies, as Hannah Arendt would suggest, is not that they, if repeated enough times, would eventually become a truth. At least not to everyone and not immediately. Given the circumstances under which a blatant lie is planted in the world, at least someone will take it as a frontal insult to a commonsense. The problem is when a lie is served in a way that renders a populace unable to pay due attention, when an avalanche of easily refutable “preposterous lies” becomes a commonplace so a reaction on them becomes irrelevant and banal. When a lie destroys “the sense by which we take our bearings in the real world” and category of truth versus falsehood becomes blurred, we succumbed to a terror of a banal lie. On Sunday, March 10, members of Ravna gora Chetnik movement (named after a birthplace of the Chetnik movement from WWII) organized a rally in Bosnian southeastern city of Visegrad. According to reports, around two hundred members and supporters of Chetnik movement gathered to commemorate the arrest of a Serb general and a leader of Chetnik movement during World War II, Dragoljub, Draza Mihailovic. -
Kontroverze I Manipulacije [The Jadovno Concentration Camp and the Šaran Pit: Controversies and Manipulations] (Zagreb: Hrvatski Institut Za Povijest, 2017)
Review of Croatian History 13/2017, no. 1, 229 - 275 Vladimir Geiger, Mario Jareb, Davor Kovačić, Jadovno i Šaranova jama: Kontroverze i manipulacije [The Jadovno Concentration Camp and the Šaran Pit: Controversies and Manipulations] (Zagreb: Hrvatski institut za povijest, 2017) Summary In the aftermath of the Second World War, the destruction and human toll wrought upon the territory of Yugoslavia, including Croatia, was extremely high. According to all indications, in the Independent State of Croatia (Nezavisna Država Hrvatska - NDH) the human loss was particularly high and tragic in the Jewish and Roma communities, as well as for the Serbs. The NDH used racial laws to determine how to deal with the Jews and Roma, while the Serbs were exposed to various forms of discrimination, persecution and violence. Furthermore, some victims of these perse- cutions and restrictive measures were Cro- ats who were declared enemies of the New Order of Europe and violated the interests of this model for the Croatian state. As shown by varied and numerous evidence, the repressive measures and sowing of ter- ror among the enemies and adversaries of the NDH and the German Reich resulted in high levels of human loss, numerous individual and mass murders, forced la- bour and concentration camps. Investiga- tions have revealed different, and for many events and places relevant, indicators, with possible minor deviations, concerning the scale of the systematic repression enacted against Jews, Roma, and Serbs, and also those who were considered to be enemies of the NDH’s “new order”. The question of fatality statistics from World War II in Yugoslavia, including Croatia, became one of the most important political issues in the conflict’s immediate aftermath and has remained so until today. -
The Case of Croatian Wikipedia: Encyclopaedia of Knowledge Or Encyclopaedia for the Nation?
The Case of Croatian Wikipedia: Encyclopaedia of Knowledge or Encyclopaedia for the Nation? 1 Authorial statement: This report represents the evaluation of the Croatian disinformation case by an external expert on the subject matter, who after conducting a thorough analysis of the Croatian community setting, provides three recommendations to address the ongoing challenges. The views and opinions expressed in this report are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the Wikimedia Foundation. The Wikimedia Foundation is publishing the report for transparency. Executive Summary Croatian Wikipedia (Hr.WP) has been struggling with content and conduct-related challenges, causing repeated concerns in the global volunteer community for more than a decade. With support of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees, the Foundation retained an external expert to evaluate the challenges faced by the project. The evaluation, conducted between February and May 2021, sought to assess whether there have been organized attempts to introduce disinformation into Croatian Wikipedia and whether the project has been captured by ideologically driven users who are structurally misaligned with Wikipedia’s five pillars guiding the traditional editorial project setup of the Wikipedia projects. Croatian Wikipedia represents the Croatian standard variant of the Serbo-Croatian language. Unlike other pluricentric Wikipedia language projects, such as English, French, German, and Spanish, Serbo-Croatian Wikipedia’s community was split up into Croatian, Bosnian, Serbian, and the original Serbo-Croatian wikis starting in 2003. The report concludes that this structure enabled local language communities to sort by points of view on each project, often falling along political party lines in the respective regions. -
