Alrededor de esa fecha han aparecido varios artícu• los relatando los hechos más destacados del primer cuarto de siglo de existencia de la institución (1), hechos que cabe aquí y ahora recordar de forma global y extender a toda la cuarentena. Both Aragonese and Catalan are minority and minoritised languages within the territory, while Castilian Spanish, the majority language, enjoys total legal protection and legitimation. The fact that we live in the era of the nation-state is crucial for understanding endangered languages in their specific socio-political context. This is why policies at macro-level and micro-level are essential for language maintenance and equality. In this article, we carry out an in-depth analysis of 57 documents: international and national legal documents, education reports, and education curricula. The aims of the paper are: 1) to analyse the current state of Aragonese language teaching in primary education in Aragon, and 2) to suggest solutions and desirable policies to address the passive bilingualism of Aragonese- speaking schoolchildren. We conclude that the linguistic diversity of a trilingual autonomous community is not reflected in the real life situation. There is also a need to Comentado [FG1]: Syntax unclear, meaning ambiguous implement language policies (bottom-up and top-down initiatives) to promote compulsory education in a minoritised language. We therefore propose a linguistic model that capitalises all languages. This study may contribute to research into Aragonese- Comentado [FG2]: Letters can be capitalized, but not languages.

Arie Schippers Romance Vernaculars From medieval times in Italy, the Romance vernaculars and their literatures stood opposite Latin, which was the official, Church and literary language. Dante Alighieri’s Latin work De vulgari eloquentia is a testimony to this linguis- tic situation. The work describes the situation in Italy and is to a large extent the justification of the place that Dante’s poetry school occupied in the overall picture. But the situation in Italy—the cradle of Latin—does not stand in iso- lation from the rest of southern Europe, such as Hispania (Arabic al-Andalus and the region of present-day Spain and Portugal) and their respective litera- tures, and Occitania, the region where the oldest vernacular lyric of medieval Europe manifested itself, mainly in the love poetry of the troubadours. Occitan The linguistic space of Occitania was originally around Toulouse, in the Languedoc, in Provence and in Aquitania, the region that today we call the Midi. Occitania is a relatively new name for the region where Occitan was spoken. The name is derived from the word oc (Latin hoc), which means ‘yes’. The earlier terms Provence, Provençal, or Languedoc or Aquitania were not sufficient to denote the linguistic region. Today, however, the language from the north of France called langue d’oïl (Latin hoc illud / hoc ille) dominates the whole area that we call the Midi or southern France. In languages whose standard form was established and implemented well after the beginning of the last century, however, such as Galician, it is still possible to perform studies from other perspectives. Unlike other languages, standard Galician was not based on a single dialect but aspired instead to be supradialectal in nature. In the present study, the tools and methods of quantitative dialectology are brought to bear in the task of establishing the extent to which dialect varieties of Galician resemble or differ from the standard variety. Moreover, the results of the analysis underline the importance of the different dialects in the evaluation of the supradialectal aim, as established by the makers of the standard variety. Introduction The measurement of linguistics differences is an old topic of linguistic research that has been given new life in recent decades by the advance of data-intensive computing systems in linguistic research. The two main topics of interest in this type of study are the measurement of the linguistic distance between language systems (languages of different families, languages of the same family, social varieties, regional varieties, etc.) and the analysis of linguistic differences within language systems, especially in computational linguistics (word-sense induction, word-sense disambiguation, etc.).

Contact: [email protected] José del Valle Ways of Seeing Language in Nineteenth-Century Galicia, Spain abstract: This article discusses a polemical encounter between two Spanish intellec- tuals – one Andalusian, Juan Valera, and one Galician, Manuel Murguía – who clashed on the desirability of cultivating Galician as a literary language. This encounter is framed as a language ideological debate and interpreted in the context of Spain’s late nineteenth- century politics of regional and national identity. The proposed reading does not so much attempt to assess the accuracy of Valera’s and Murguía’s views of Galician as to understand the terms in which they struggled to impose their particular way of seeing the region’s sociolinguistic configuration. The relation between what we see and what we know is never settled. Each evening we see the sun set. We know that the earth is turning away from it. Yet the knowledge, the explanation, never quite fits the sight (Berger 1972: 7). We only see what we look at. To look is an act of choice (ibid. 8). Soon after we can see, we are aware that we can also be seen.

And yet, you probably don’t know much about this language because it has a history of oppression, hostility, and silence. I am referring to Catalan, the language of Barcelona, Valencia and the Balearic Islands. In fact, Catalan is the manifestation of what the Plataforma per la Llengua —the leading, independent Catalan language rights organisation— calls the “Spanish anomaly”, referring to Spain’s poor record as regards the respect for cultural diversity and the protection of linguistic minorities. This anomaly could be summed up like this: Spain contains within its borders the largest language in Europe that does not enjoy full official recognition. Catalan clearly is not a minority language, in terms of either the size of its linguistic community (ca. 10 million speakers) or the spheres in which it used — from business to education, from the media to parliament and local councils. Indeed, it is similar to other middle-sized European languages such as Czech, Danish or Dutch.

One hundred informants completed an online survey regarding attitudes toward and uses of Valencian and Castilian in various situations. The results were first analyzed globally, then again based on the independent variables of age, sex, and mother tongue.
