We celebrate the feast of Saint Andrew, the “first-called” of the apostles, on November 30 at the start of our liturgical . Consider praying the St. Andrew Christmas Novena this Advent. Those who participate in the Christmas Novena traditionally offer the St. Andrew prayer fifteen daily from November 30 to December 24. Draw closer to the heart of Christ as you ponder the joyful mystery of the Nativity of Our Lord.

Hail and blessed be the hour and moment in which the Son of God was born of the most pure Virgin Mary, at midnight, in Bethlehem, in piercing cold. Experience the power of faith and prayer with PRAY: THE STORY OF PATRICK PEYTON, the true story of the man behind the famous phrase, “The Family That Prays Together Stays Together.” He was a poor Irish immigrant whose plan to become a millionaire was derailed when, through Our Lady’s intercession, he narrowly avoided death. He became a priest on a mission to promote the Rosary and all family prayer, whether through mass media in Hollywood or with huge Rosary rallies around the world. Over 20 ago, as Pope Saint John Paul II was ending a visit to St. Louis, he gave us this challenge: "And so America: If you want peace, work for justice. If you want justice, defend life. If you want life, embrace truth— truth revealed by God." The Holy Father's plan to end violence was wonderfully simple: • Embracing God's truth leads us to defend human life. • Defending human life is the foundation of justice. • And a culture of justice can transform a tendency to violence into a movement for peace. From Tom Grenchik, Executive Director of the Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Please join us for a socially-distanced blood drive, provided by the American Red Cross, on Friday, December 11, from 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s. Gifts of stock are always appreciated, and there are significant tax benefits available to those who give appreciated stock held longer than a year. Those who choose to donate stock are generally entitled to a tax deduction based on the full fair market value of the stock at the time the gift is made, not just the original cost. Additionally, donors do not incur any capital gains tax when stock is given away rather than sold. Please consider a stock gift when donating to the Church of St. Michael, St. Mary’s Church, or St. Croix Catholic School.

If you are considering or planning a gift of stock for 2020, please begin the process by December 10, if possible.

Most transactions take only a few days to process, but some can take a few to pass through the process. Please contact Paul Kiolbasa of Wealth Management Group at 651-351-0900 for the necessary stock gift account numbers.

The IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) is another popular, tax-favored option for making donations. If you are 70 ½ or older, you may direct distributions from your IRA to qualified charities without including them in your taxable income. To make a charitable rollover and qualify for tax relief: · The distribution must be made from a traditional IRA. Contact your IRA custodian to begin the process. · The IRA owner must be 70 ½ or older. · The distribution must be paid directly from the IRA custodian to the church or school. Please request that the distribution includes your name and the purpose of the gift (Sunday Giving, Legacy of Faith, etc.) · The total charitable distributions cannot exceed $100,000 per year, per donor.

We always recommend that you seek professional advice in these matters. However, if you have any questions for either parish, please contact Katie Rolf in our Finance Department at St. Michael's office at 651-379-1267.

Important: Please refer to the Flocknote you received regarding changes to this ’s Faith Formation sessions due to Advent Confessions.

My wife and I found out we were expecting our oldest child a into the pregnancy. We were so excited, and as a new father I did not know what to expect. We had many to wait for our child to be born. I kept thinking about how I could better prepare for the coming of our son. I did projects around the house, prepared a space for our son in our home, and adjusted the budget to make sure it reflected our new reality. We changed everything in our lives to accommodate this child we were about to welcome into our home.

At the beginning of this Advent, I have been pondering: What if I was only given four weeks to prepare for my son? Not just prepare our space and logistics for my child but prepare myself for his coming. Our Church—in Her marvelous wisdom—starts the liturgical year with the season of Advent, a wonderful time of preparation. During Advent we ponder how Mary and Joseph prepared for the coming of their Son. We reflect on the gift of the Incarnation. We prepare to celebrate His birth 2,000 years ago. But we are not just preparing for something that happened 2,000 years ago, are we?

Let us continue to remember this Advent that we are preparing for the second coming of Christ. If you knew Jesus’ second coming was going to happen in four weeks, how would you start preparing today? Would you cut unnecessary things out of your life? Would you add time for prayer to get to know Him? Would you spend more time with your family? What are you going to commit to this Advent in order to be prepared? Jesus says we will not know the day or the hour of His return. Let us prepare as if He is coming tomorrow.

Our Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program incorporates hands-on learning. We are in great need of volunteers to color Bible timelines as well as cut and laminate materials. All of the work can be done from home, and all materials will be provided. Please contact Danell Rudquist at [email protected] if interested.
