Stravinsky’s Mass (1948), accompanied by a small orchestra, is the setting on the eve of Candlemas. His predecessor, John Woolrich, wrote Spring in Winter for the 2001 carol service. On three of the Fridays in Lent, extracts from Victoria’s Tenebrae Responsories will be sung. The whole of Psalm 119 will be recited during this penitential season, and chorales from Bach’s St John Passion will be used as introits. Alessandro Scarlatti’s monumental setting of Stabat Mater for ten voices will be heard at Evensong on the last Sunday of term. Amongst this term’s organ recitalists are Robert Quinney, currently Assistant Master of Music at Westminster Cathedral, who was from 1995 to 1998 and Ian Hare, Organist at Lancaster University, Organ Scholar from 1968 to 1971.
