No: 114 06100 ANKARA / TÜRKİYE State Institute of Statistics, Printing Division - Ankara, July 2003 MTB: 2003 - 1019 - 250 Adet FOREWORD In the information age. we are all becoming increasingly dependent on timely, fast, and reliable sources of information. The need for social, economic, and cultural information is constantly increasing, in response to this need, the State Institute of Statistics (SIS) decided to issue an easy-to-use handbook to provide interested readers and researchers with the essential statistics on Turkey "at a glance format in a time perspective. This handbook presents an overview of the physical, social, and cultural characteristics of Turkey. Most of the statistical data in the handbook originate from specialized SIS publications and other public and private sector sources. The tables, charts, and pictures in the handbook titled "TURKEY IN STATISTICS 2002" contain information on the Turkish area, climate, economy, demography, social and cultural life, labour, transportation, construction, communication, tourism, education, health services, and government administration. The other yearbooks of our Institute cover all of these subjects in greater detail and should be consulted in the event a reader wishes more extensive documentation in any subject matter. We believe that this publication will be beneficial to decision-makers, researchers and all the other users of statistics. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ömer DEMİR President The State Institute of Statistics GENERAL EXPLANATIONS PERIOD COVERED BY THE HANDBOOK The data, with the exception of certain tables and historical series, are presented to permit five year comparisons for the period 1997-2002. Unless otherwise stated, "year" refers to the calendar year. Fiscal year refers to the 12 months beginning with January 1st of each year. SOURCES OF DATA The data in the handbook are taken from official sources. These sources are classified into two categories; the State Institute of Statistics and other institutions. Tables for which no source is given are based on information prepared by SIS. Tables for which a source is given are based on information taken directly from that source. TABLES Tables are designed to give first totals and later detailed information. UNITS OF MEASUREMENT Unless otherwise designated all units of measurement are given in the framework of the metric system. SPECIAL SYMBOLS * Data is provisional. Not applicable. Data not available. • Composition and Abundance of Octocorals in the Sea of Marmara, Where the Mediterranean Meets the Black Sea

Topçu 1,2, Bayram Öztürk 1,2 1 Istanbul University Fisheries Faculty, Ordu cad No 200 Laleli, 34470 Istanbul, Turkey. E-mail: [email protected] 2 Turkish Marine Research Foundation, No 10, Beykoz, 81650, Istanbul, Turkey. Summary: Species composition and abundance of octocoral assemblages were investigated in the Sea of Marmara, which forms the connection between the Mediterranean and the Black Seas, two semi-enclosed seas with peculiar oceanographic conditions. Fourteen octocoral species were collected in the saline layer of the Marmara Sea (20-40 m), with a mean coral abundance of 5.21±5.11 colonies m–2 (mean ± SD) calculated from a total of 1390 colonies counted in transects. In spite of severe anthropogenic disturbances, dense assemblages of corals/gorgonians were observed during this study. The coral- ligenous communities—one of the most valuable structures of the Mediterranean Sea—harbored either Eunicella cavolini or Paramuricea macrospina as the dominant gorgonian in the Marmara Sea. Furthermore, the gorgonian assemblages of the Marmara Sea differed from those of the Mediterranean in their high abundance of P. macrospina and Spinimuricea klavereni, two species rarely encountered in the Mediterranean Sea at the studied depth range. The factors behind the observed differ- ences are discussed in regard to the particular oceanographic conditions of the Marmara Sea. Finally, we revised the main threats to corals/gorgonians in the Marmara Sea and provided some insights on management recommendations for coral conservation in this area.

ETHNIC SURVIVAL, NATIONALISM AND FORCED MIGRATION The historical demography of the Greek community of Asia Minor at the close of the Ottoman era Introductory An important new trend in Ottoman studies focuses on the historical demography of the Ottoman Empire. A number of scholars have attempt ed in recent years to reconstruct the evolution of the population in various parts and provinces of the Empire. The great interest of these studies consists in the new documentation they bring to light from the non-generally accessible Ottoman archives'. The historical demography of more recent times, especially of the nineteenth century, can be doc umented on the basis of official censuses and other population regis ters2 . In apple orchards, 133 weed species belonging to 31 families were determined. The average density of weeds was 112.486 plant/m2. From these, one of them belonged to Pterydophyta, 21 species of Monocotyledoneae and 111 species of Dicotyledoneae. Densities of these species were 13.761 plant/m2 for Agropyron repens, 12.173 for Chenopodium album, 12.103 for Bromus arvensis and 10.758 for Amaranthus retroflexus. According to the occurrence frequency of the weeds; C. album was found to be more than 56% in 6 subregion excluding Andırın, Pazarcık, Türkoğlu and Center. A. repens was found to be more than 50% in the 10 subregions. A. retroflexus was detected to be more than 54% in the other 7 subregions excluding Center, Türkoğlu and Pazarcık. Cynodon dactylon was found only in Tamer Üstüner Afşin (50.1%), Çağlayancerit (50.9%), Andırın (76.9%) and it was below 50% in the other 7 subregions. In terms of coverage, Alopecurus myosuroides, A.
