Today we G welcome our guests from GOSPORT BOROUGH FC to our home, and we hope they enjoy their short visit, and have a safe journey home to Hampshire’s south coast later tonight. My thanks go especially to Rachel Stone for providing details for this programme. Our visit to Gosport almost eight months ago produced a 2-1 defeat, but was a game that I think many of us felt we might have got some kind of result. A lot of water has passed under Staines Bridge since then, and ‘results’ have been few and far between, meaning that we’ve long since been relegated, but our visi- tors still have everything to play for as they try to preserve their Premier Division status. Just five years ago, Boro were looking forward to a trip to Wembley to contest the FA Trophy final, but a couple of years after they saw them beset by financial worries, which was to see them lose their place in the Conference South. Frome’s fate—which became likely after we beat them—could be con- firmed this afternoon, and Gosport’s is no longer entirely in their own hands, for they will need one or more of the six teams above them to drop points if they are to survive—but with the situation in- credibly tight in the lower half, there’s every chance of that … if The Boro can pick up the points they need to stay up. Talking of Wembley, we must mention our neighbours Chertsey Town, who’ve booked their tickets for the arch on 19th May, when they will take on Cray Valley (Paper Mills) in the FA Vase final. The Curfews (and in particular their stalwart Secretary, Chris Gay) were excellent host during the period we groundshared at Alwyns Lane, two decades ago now, and we wish them luck, especial- ly as they have two ex-Swans, Lewis Driver and Quincy Rowe, in their squad. Lining up against them will be another ex-Swan, Gavin Tomlin, who scored Cray’s winner in the semi-final. After today’s game, we are next in action just 48 hours later, with the Easter Monday after- noon visit to Harrow Borough, who’ve enjoyed a very steady season. As someone who shall rename nameless managed to turn up at Chalfont instead of Chesham last weekend, I’ll give the address here: Earlsmead Stadium, Earlsmead, Carlyon Avenue, South Harrow, Middlesex, HA2 8SS! Got that, Bill? KO is 3pm. We then conclude our season in a week’s time with a visit from Poole Town. What price our first “double” of the season?? We would normally have our end of season presentation after the final game, especially when it’s at home (and we’ve finished with a home game in four of the past five campaigns), but in view of the way the season has gone, and the uneasy relationship with The Thames Club, that won’t be happening this season. However, for continuity if nothing else, we will still be receiving votes for the “Dick Watmore” and “Albert Estall” Player of the Year awards: those eligible to vote in the latter need only reply to the email they’d have received last week; anyone can take part in the former by completing a slip or otherwise advis- ing the Club Secretary—[email protected]. Finally—a couple of belated “congratulations to pass on. Angie Payne (pictured) is back with us today after missing the last home game while off on a cruise to celebrate her 70th [thanks to her husband, Glenn Gulyás, for the pic]. And well done to our Junior teams who’ve been chasing silverware, and in par- ticular to Phil George’s side for winning the coveted Middlesex Cup last month. We will be inviting those lads along to parade their hard-earned cup at next week’s game. ENJOY THE GAME.
