    THE HAMPSHIRE CRICKET SOCIETY Patrons: John Woodcock Frank Bailey Shaun Udal NEWSLETTER 314 – JANUARY 2012 MEETINGS Wednesday 11 January 2012 - Meeting The Society extends a warm welcome to this evening’s speaker, Martin Bodenham. He is the only man to referee in the Football League and umpire in first-class cricket. Born in Brighton on 23 April 1950, MARTIN JOHN DALE BODENHAM took up refereeing in local parks football in his native town (now city) in 1966. He graduated to the top level in 1978. He was the fourth official at the 1994 European Cup Final, when A C Milan, inspired by a majestic Dejan Savicevic, swamped Barcelona 4 – 0 in one of the greatest performances in the Competition’s history. On the domestic scene, he refereed the League Cup Final between Leicester City and Middlesborough at Wembley in 1997. The teams were unable to finish affairs at the end of extra time (1 – 1) and so a replay was necessary at Hillsborough. This match also went to extra time but the maverick Steve Claridge eventually won the match for Leicester City with a goal in the 100th minute. He also refereed four international matches and two FA Cup Semi-Finals. He retired from refereeing in 1998, whereupon he became an umpire in the Sussex Cricket League. Brooks, Chris Markham, Tom ̈ RECEIVED : 13 JANUARY 2013 ̈ ACCEPTED : 11 MARCH 2013 Abstract This paper analyses the 53 managerial sackings and resignations from 16 stock exchange listed English football clubs during the nine seasons between 2000/01 and 2008/09. The results demonstrate that, on average, a managerial sacking results in a post-announcement day market-adjusted share price rise of 0.3%, whilst a resignation leads to a drop in share price of 1% that continues for a trading month thereafter, cumulating in a negative abnormal return of over 8% from a trading day before the event. These findings are intuitive, and suggest that sacking a poorly performing manager may be welcomed by the markets as a possible route to better future match performance, while losing a capable manager through resignation, who typically progresses to a superior job, will result in a drop in a club’s share price. The paper also reveals that while the impact of managerial departures on stock price volatilities is less clear-cut, speculation in the newspapers is rife in the build-up to such an event.
