QUORN FOOTBALL CLUB Matlock Town sprung to prominence as one of the leading non-league clubs in the country.

They joined the Northern (NPL) in 1969/70 and their early years in the competition saw them struggle towards the bottom of TODAY’S the league. VISITORS Prior to life in the NPL they had won the Central Alliance Division North Championship in 1959/60 and 1960/61, which saw them enter the Midland Counties League which they won in their debut season. Additionally in 1959/60 they reached the FA Cup First Round for the first time, losing 1-0 at home to Crook Town after a replay.

When they won the Midland Counties League for the second time in 1968/69, they were invited to join the NPL and they have now been members of the league for fifty-one seasons.

Matlock won the FA Trophy at Wembley in April 1975, beating MATLOCK TOWN Scarborough 4-0, then a record winning margin for the final and the only time when three brothers have played for the same club in a Wembley final as Tom, Mick and Nick Fenoughty played leading roles. Facts Peter Swan had taken over as manager at the start of the season and bringing about a fantastic attacking style to Matlock’s play. Success Figures had come earlier in the 1974/75 campaign as Matlock progressed to the First Round of the FA Cup, losing 4-1 at home to eventual Founded Third Division Champions Blackburn Rovers in front of over 5,000 1878 spectators. Two days after their Wembley win, they captured the Derbyshire Senior Cup for the first time with a 6-1 home win against Glossop and an aggregate margin of 9-3. Nickname Gladiators Tom Fenoughty replaced Swan as manager at the start of the 1976/77 season which saw Matlock reach the FA Cup Third Round for the Manager one and only time to date. In Round Two Matlock beat eventual Third Paul Phillips Division champions Mansfield Town 5-2 on their own ground, the Stags only home defeat of the campaign. Carlisle beat them in the 2018-19 next round and drew Liverpool away in Round Four! The NPL title narrowly eluded them as the finished in third spot behind champions Northern Premier Boston United and Northwich Victoria but silverware came their way League - Premier with an aggregate win over New Mills in the Derbyshire Senior Cup Division Final.

Ground In 1977/78 Matlock won the NPL League Cup by beating Boston Causeway Lane United 3-0 in the final at Maine Road, Manchester to enable them to qualify for the Anglo-Italian tournament in 1979. They finished as English runners-up to Sutton United following 2-1 defeats to both Chieti and Pisa in Italy but beating Junior Casale and Cremonese 2-0 at home.

Matlock’s best league campaign to date was in 1983/84 when they finished runners-up to Barrow. Their last FA Cup First Round appearance was in 1989/90 when they were beaten 4-1 at Scunthorpe United.

QUORN FOOTBALL CLUB QUORN FOOTBALL CLUB They lost their Premier Division status at the end of the 1995/96 campaign and did not return to the top-flight until they finished second to Hyde United in the NPL First Division in 2003/04. In the following season they won the NPL League Cup after beating Whitby Town in a two-legged final. Since then Matlock’s league form has been patchy with a number of bottom half finishes, their best being a fifth place finish in 2006/07 when they lost in the Play-off semi-final after extra time at Witton Albion. Witton proved to be an unlucky ground for them in that season as Fleetwood Town beat them 1-0 to lift the NPL League Cup.

Their most recent honours have been in the Derbyshire Senior Cup which they won in 2014/15 and 2016/17, on both occasions beating Gresley in the final at Chesterfield 7-0 and 5-0 respectively. They have been giant killers in the FA Trophy though, beating Mansfield Town in 2012/13, FC Halifax and Solihull Moors in 2016/17 and Chorley in 2019/20.

They have one of the most picturesque grounds in the country and with a new stand and Social Club up and running since 2011, there are some top class facilities on the ground.

Finally, why are Matlock nicknamed the Gladiators? A lot of people ask the question. It’s because one time PA announcer Jim Whitworth played the ‘Entry of the Gladiators’ music as Matlock ran out on to the pitch, and it stayed, hence Matlock being known throughout the country as The Gladiators.

QUORN FOOTBALL CLUB QUORN FOOTBALL CLUB QUORN FOOTBALL CLUB QUORN FOOTBALL CLUB Interesting Facts about the FA Cup......

1. Spurs is the only non-league team to have won the FA Cup. They won it in 1901, and then 60 years later they became the first team to win the league and cup double.

2. The highest score line in the final is 6-0, when Derby County was beaten by Bury in 1903.

3. The longest FA Cup tie lasted five games. This incredibly long game was finally ended when Bury beat Stoke in the 4th replay in 1954. Talk about exhausting!

4. Leicester City has reached the final four times. Of those four times, none of them resulted in victory.

5. The fastest goal scored in the FA Cup final was 42 seconds. This amazing goal was scored by Roberto Di Matteo, who played for Chelsea, and later managed them to a Champions League title.

6. The first player to be sent off in the FA Cup final was Kevin Moran of Manchester United in 1985 in the match against Everton.

7. Arsenal has lost 6-0 three times in the FA Cup. The first was against Sunderland in 1883, the second against Derby in 1889, and the third against West Ham in 1946.

8. West Brom was the first team to win the FA Cup with a completely English born team in 1888.

9. Blackburn had an amazing run of 24 consecutive games in which they were undefeated during the FA Cup between the years 1884 and 1886.

10. Ashley Cole holds 7 winner’s medals. No one else has previously won so many for himself before.

11. In 1990 the three semi final matches had a total of 16 goals. The goals were scored by 16 different players, which is really quite bizarre.

12. In 1946 and 1947 the ball actually burst in both finals, something which has not occurred since. This is likely due to the poor materials used to make the balls in post wartime Britain and the lack of back up balls we have today.

QUORN FOOTBALL CLUB QUORN FOOTBALL CLUB Good Evening,

I would like to thank you all for your support tonight, this game is the sort of game many managers look forward to - coming up against one of your old sides! It is nice to meet up with people from the club you know but it can be difficult to prepare yourself mentally for the game as you remember all the good times you had there, but that is something have to cope with.

Our performances have been good for the majority of the time but we need to stop making those minor errors which allow the opposition to punish us. We know that everyone makes them, we are all human after all but the teams near the top of the table will be the ones that keep their errors to the minimum.

This game gives us the chance to show if we can match a side from a higher level and progress to the next round of this competition.

I hope you as supporters are enjoying the style of football we aim to play and that it will bring us success in the forthcoming season.

We would like to remind supporters of their responsibility to the FA Respect Campaign. It is also very important referees and assistant referees are shown the respect that they deserve whilst trying to carry out the very difficult job of controlling a game of football. There will always be decisions that we may not agree with but we do not think that anybody should have to put up with some of the abuse that has been heard at some games. It should be remembered that without officials we do not have a game of football.

QUORN FOOTBALL CLUB QUORN FOOTBALL CLUB IF YOU’RE reading this, then it’s good news – you’re reading a football programme, an increasingly endangered species.

Like many things post covid and in this ‘new normal’ there are lots of things different at our Non League grounds now. The National League have given their clubs the option of not running programmes this year and we’ve seen similar in the EFL.

In this digital world an increasing number of clubs are looking at those avenues rather than the printed page. Everyone will have their views on this traditional aspect of football match going.

But here we are, in a programme, talking about competitive Non League football. Hopefully that is as good to read as it is good to write. For many months now we’ve not had much competitive football to write about in The NLP. Yes, we had some play off games, but the return this month of competitive football starting with the Emirates FA Cup has been most welcome.

Of course, everything around the game is different. We’re all getting used to the added things we have to do. Book a ticket online beforehand, fill out a ‘test and trace’ form, sanitise our hands as we enter the ground, follow one way systems.

It’s very different to what we left in March when the 2019-20 season stopped in its tracks. Players are turning up in kit, staying out at half time for team talks – the current weather helps – and sitting apart on the bench.

But, when the whistle goes, it’s back to the football we’ve all missed so much. Crowds being allowed back in stadiums was a massive breakthrough. Hopefully Steps 2 and above will soon follow because all clubs need that money coming through the gate.

From a reporter’s point of view, we’ve never covered such a fluid situation. Things changed literally by the hour. Sometimes even within ten minutes of being told one thing, another call would come through saying it was now something else. It’s been a challenge!

Without crowds it would have been impossible to start the season. Then the fears for clubs as soon as the pandemic broke out would have been multiplied.

I remember one week, way back in the summer, being told four different opinions on the start date for 2020-21. One said September/October, another ventured November, someone else thought January and another, informed person, feared not at all!

Thankfully the first person’s guess was correct but we all are aware it’s a fine line with cases on the rise again. Already we’re getting used to clubs withdrawing from the FA Cup at the last minute because of positive tests and there will no doubt be late cancellations of games throughout the season.

We can all play our part. Help clubs stick to the crucial social distancing rules that need to be adhered to. Fill out ’test and trace’ forms and throw a couple of extra quid into the coffers.

Every little helps. Including buying this programme.

Enjoy your football! By Matt Badcock

QUORN FOOTBALL CLUB QUORN FOOTBALL CLUB The FA Cup: A History of Magic

The FA Cup is the oldest cup competition in the world. It is just shy of a century and a half old. In the same year as the first ever FA Cup match, Germany was created, there was a Napoleon in captivity having been removed as leader of France, Queen Victoria opened the Royal Albert Hall, and the President of the United States was former Civil War General Ulysses S. Grant.

The FA Cup has survived from that alien, ancient time, to provide us with something that few other competitions in the world can provide. As unlikely as it may seem, it is still possible, 146 years later, for a team that starts in the earliest rounds – the first weekend of August, before the elite clubs have even returned from their far-flung pre-season tours – to go all the way and win the FA Cup. That’s something worth celebrating....

Of course, the competition has evolved significantly in that time. Only fifteen teams entered the original competition (this season there are over 700), which was of course won by Wanderers. Before the construction of a national stadium in Wembley (The Empire Stadium, as it was originally known), the final took place at one of the other great British sporting venues – the Oval.

Slightly under 90,000 fans poured into Wembley to watch last year’s final. In 1872, it was just 2,000, and they saw Morton Betts score in a single goal victory for Wanderers against Royal Engineers. It was the first of 5 FA Cup victories, the last of which came in 1878, 140 years ago by the time we reach this season’s final. That puts them in the top 10 all-time FA Cup winners - joined on 5 by Everton and Manchester City.

The Cup is famous for, almost synonymous with, giant killings. We all know about Hereford beating Newcastle and Sutton beating Coventry, but it was going on long before the television cameras were there to pick up the action. In the late 1940s, Swindon won away at Burnley, who were the FA Cup holders, in one of the biggest shocks of all time, and a year later tiny Yeovil, playing deep in non-league, beat mighty Sunderland of the old First Division – a Sunderland side referred to as The Bank of England because of the amount of money they had spent chasing success.

As far back as 1907, non-league (as they were at the time) Crystal Palace, in difficult form, travelled to a Newcastle United side who were second in the league and unbeaten at St. James’ Park, and won. Perhaps this was the first great giant killing.

QUORN FOOTBALL CLUB QUORN FOOTBALL CLUB Over the years, the FA Cup has fallen from grace as the showpiece final, the ultimate goal, to be seen as secondary prize to the clubs that often win it. As much as loyal supporters might want silverware, to the richest in the land it is not as worthwhile as finishing fourth and a coveted place in the Champions League, but this should not diminish the famous old competition.

Some say the magic of the cup is gone, or at least in short supply, but they are mistaken. Just look at the competition and ask fans of Brackley Town, of Sutton United, how magical they think the cup was. Just look ask Bishop Auckland, who made it from the Extra-Preliminary Round to the Fourth Qualifying Round, or Westfields, who went one better. Look at Stamford, who beat National League side Wrexham.

So, while the boys at the top argue that the cup has no magic left to give, let us remember that Lincoln City captured the imaginations of football fans up and down the country last season. While they persist that it is a secondary competition and that they would rather finish third in the league, let us remember that it was this diminished competition that saved Arsene Wenger’s job, the longest serving manager in the country.

And let us not forget that it all begins on the first weekend of August. There might only be a few paying attention to the earliest rounds of the FA Cup, only a few who realise that the competition starts before January. But it is those few, who come to an Extra-Preliminary Round game at the height of summer, who make the competition what it is.

The smallest of teams has a chance to provide the magic, and that’s all we ask for, a chance....

The origins of Quorn Football Club can be traced back to 1924 when a group of local lads from the Village Wesleyan Chapel formed a football team. In 1937 the Club, then known as Quorn Methodists gained access to the Leicestershire Senior League with a final name change to Quorn Football Club taking place in 1952.

Throughout its history Quorn FC has consistently been a high flyer among Leicestershire’s senior teams, producing several players that have progressed to higher levels of excellence. Jackie Lee a Centre Forward went on to play for Leicester City and Derby County becoming an international, when he played for England v Ireland and scored. Richie Barker, who went on to play for Derby County and Notts County later managed Stoke City, Dion Dublin, who enjoyed a great playing career joining Manchester United, Aston Villa, Coventry, Leicester City, and as well as playing for England.

In recent times Luke Varney, who was sold by the Club to Crewe Alexandra FC, and who developed into one of their most exciting players scoring 25 goals for them in the 2006/7 season, his quality was then recognised by Charlton Athletic who signed him for £2.5 Million in July 2007.

Quorn moved to its present ground on Farley Way in 1994 with the establishment of a new modern Clubhouse large enough to cater for the demands of a progressive Football Club both on and off the field, a football pitch with a playing surface that is second to none, and a large Astroturf training area.

Driven by the Club’s ambition to have a ground satisfying the facility criteria of Leagues at a higher level in the Football Pyramid, the following 14 years has seen remarkable progress, with the development of a 350 Seat Grandstand, built with the potential of increasing it’s future capacity to 500, large spectator car parking facilities, outside spectator toilets, and the establishment of a large grass training pitch to compliment the Astroturf.

The 2019-20 season sees the Club looking for a bit of stability, the First Team Management led by our First Team Manager – Martin Carruthers will look to improve the playing squad with new signings, whilst still looking to bring on the Clubs youngsters. Martin’s Management CV is well known in Non-League Football as well as a fantastic playing career with many clubs but best known for playing with Stoke City, Peterborough United, Southend United, Scunthorpe United and Macclesfield Town.

Martin was last manager at Basford United FC who play at Step 3 in The Evo-Stik - Premier Division.

Ade Draycott and Frank Benjamin manage our Under 21 Squad in The Midland Football League – Under 21 East Division.
