Abstract: This report provides an overview of changing trends and dynamics of students and academics’ mobility into France, Spain, UK and Italy. The link between migration and higher education policies analysed in Working Paper 2, on the one hand, and these changing trends in flows and stocks of international students and academics in our four TEMPER EU countries, on the other, is examined in detail. In achieving this goal a multiplicity of data sources, both international (UNESCO, OECD, Eurostat) and national-specific ones, have been carefully reviewed and exploited. After such a thorough overview, we have identified major difficulties in establishing common statistical categories that allow, first, proper cross- national comparisons and, secondly, an adeQuate within-country assessment of the outcomes achieved by policies aimed at promoting internationalization of the tertiary education and research system, as well as increasing their diversification and competitiveness in attracting ‘the best and the brightest’ in the increasingly globalized educational market. These limitations affect data availability for all the main students’ categories (Undergraduate, Master and PhD. Students), but are particularly remarkable as we move up in the academic career trying to examine the extent to which academic and research positions have become more (or less) permeable to internationalization dynamics. Immigration has, to an extent, been transformed from a strangely neglected subject to a key contemporary issue. In the inter-war period which I have been studying, the number of foreign nationals residing long term in France doubled, rising from 1,532,000 (or 3.9% of the population) in 1921, to around 3,000,000 (or 7% of the total population) by 1930.[1] Such a tidal wave of migrant labour undoubtedly had a crucial role to play in the development of France in the interwar period and as such has certainly deserved the study undertaken by numerous historians. Equally, within a subject so vast, room still remains for further studies, both regional and national. However, in looking at the subject it seemed to me that, while much recent attention has been devoted to immigration 'per se', very little research has been conducted into that group of immigrants who chose to make their pact with France permanent, via the process of naturalisation.

In this paper, I draw on cases from the early modern Parlement of Paris, the court of last instance for the northern half of metropolitan France, to explore this sexual act on a scale from small villages to large cities. Sodomy as an act had multitudinous meanings for early modern people. Despite its premodern status as an “unnatural vice,” it increasingly fell to secular authorities to determine punishment for sodomy in the early modern period. Between 1540 and 1670, as many as 137 men were prosecuted for male-male sodomy in the Parlement of Paris.

    “The Italian Occupation of South-Eastern France, 1940-1943” Niall MacGalloway Supervisor: Dr Stephen Tyre This thesis is submitted in fulfilment of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of History, University of St Andrews October 2015 Abstract Between 1940 and 1943, Fascist Italy occupied south-eastern metropolitan France, a period which forms one of the principle lacunae in the historiography of both France and Italy during the Second World War. This thesis will examine the occupation in detail, examining how Italy governed her zone of occupation; how relations between the two states operated in the zone; what financial and economic gains Italy made in the occupied territories; and how Italian officials embarked upon a program of Italianisation and Fascistisation in the occupied communes. This thesis will bring together many sources for the first time in English, including principal Italian and French archives, coupled with local archival holdings. The thesis will argue that Italian efforts to create her own sphere of influence were hampered by German desires to put German interests first; and by Italy’s inability to control the pace of the war. In my dissertation, I conduct a comparative study of these women’s narratives. I offer a nuanced study of the women’s literary works in order to fill a pronounced gap in current exile literature scholarship of the period, which has focused almost exclusively on male authors. My critical framework for this research is interdisciplinary, structured predominantly around the narrative theory of life writing. In addition, I also pull from exile, feminist, and sociological theory. Ultimately, I demonstrate that there are experiences and literary themes common to the three ii women, despite the fact that they were not closely linked in their exile.

This study is undertaken and described in the context of the different policies on migrant integration and minority languages in the three migration countries. The investigation uses the ‘Case Study’ methodology in the format of an embedded multiple case-study project. The third generation was made the focus of the study to investigate Fishman’s “intergroup social dependency” theory. According to this theory, when the immigrant experience is viewed from a perspective of three or more generation time depth, the immigrant group generally loses its language due to its dependency on the host society for its survival. Fishman contends that only an effective and strict ‘compartmentalisation of language functions’ between the minority language and the host language can help the minority group maintain its language. The findings indicate that for people of Italian background living as a minority group in language contact situation compartmentalisation is not a viable alternative. Nor do they consider the ‘maintenance’ of their community language important. When in the migration country bilingualism is valued, it is the standard variety of the heritage language that is chosen for maintenance and further learning.
