The development of the construction industry, conducting construction in accordance with standard projects, and transforming the construction materials industry in hard-to-reach and sparsely populated areas will make significant progress in solving the housing problem. Industrialization of housing construction is a catalyst for strong growth of the region’s economy and the quality of life of citizens. The purpose of this study is to develop a methodology for assessing the level of industrialization of the territory’s construction complex and its development potential for increasing the volume of low-rise housing stock. Research tasks: 1) assessment of the need to develop housing construction, including low-rise housing, on a particular territory; 2) development of a methodology for calculating the level of industrialization of construction in the area under consideration to determine the possibility of developing low-rise housing construction in this area in the proposed way; 3) approbation of the method using the example of rural areas of the Arkhangelsk region. It was revealed that the districts of the Arkhangelsk region have medium and low levels of industrialization. The districts that are most in need of an increase in the rate of housing construction have been identified. -

The Arkhangelsk oblast has long been one of Russia’s most important forest industrial regions. This paper analyses the changes in accessibility of forest resources and forest commodity production during the transition period in the 1990s. Special attention is given to firm restructuring, active roles of domestic capital and the different survival strategies that have been developed by in- dustries in the region. Further analysis deals with signs of economic recovery in the forest sector due to the processes of restructuring, modernisation and self-organisation. Foreword With this report on the forest sector institutions in Arkhangelsk Oblast the second study in a series of case studies that IIASA has initiated in different regions of the Russian Federation is completed. The first study was conducted in Tomsk Oblast. That study was reported in Carlsson & Olsson, eds. 1998; Carlsson & Olsson, 1998; Carlsson, Lundgren & Olsson, 1999. Studies are currently being conducted in the Karelian Re- public as well as in the regions of Moscow, Murmansk, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, and Kha- barovsk. All these studies deal with institutional aspects of the Russian forest sector. The research has been made possible through financial support from The Swedish Council for Planning and Coordination of Research (FRN) and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (KVA). How to use the Atlas The Atlas has two map sections The Main Section shows the location of Russia’s intact forest landscapes. The Thematic Section shows their tree species composition in two different ways. The legend is placed at the beginning of each set of maps. If you are looking for an area near a town or village Go to the Index on page 153 and find the alphabetical list of settlements by English name. The Cyrillic name is also given along with the map page number and coordinates (latitude and longitude) where it can be found. Capitals of regions and districts (raiony) are listed along with many other settlements, but only in the vicinity of intact forest landscapes. The reader should not expect to see a city like Moscow listed. Villages that are insufficiently known or very small are not listed and appear on the map only as nameless dots. If you are looking for an administrative region Go to the Index on page 185 and find the list of administrative regions. The numbers refer to the map on the inside back cover. Having found the region on this map, the reader will know which index map to use to search further. If you are looking for the big picture Go to the overview map on page 35. This map shows all of Russia’s Intact Forest Landscapes, along with the borders and Roman numerals of the five index maps. The article, devoted to the analysis of transport and geographical locations, describes possible strategies for the development of tourism in the Arkhangelsk Oblast. The main goal of the research was the development of logistic schemes of the transportation of tourists from the places of formation of tourist flows to the Arkhangelsk Oblast. The methodological basis of the article is to determine the economic dis- tances between potential tourist distribution centers and their places of interest in the area. Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Arkhangelsk were considered as the main towns of departure. Kargopol, Solvychegodsk, Kholmogory and Lomonosovo, Solovki, Kenozersky National Park, and Pinega caves are regarded as the main sites of tourist interest in the Arkhangelsk Oblast. It was determined that Kargopol is the most acces- sible for tourists, and Kenozersky National Park is the most recognizable by tourists but the least accessible. The object of world cultural heritage, the Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Saviour on Solovki is the most accessible for tourists from the territory of Karelia. It is recommended to optimize the schedule and to synchronize the work of transport for tourists to improve the transport accessibility of recreational facili- ties in the area. -

Plesetsk Is Russia's "Other Cosmodrome" North of Moscow
Russia’s Other Cosmodrome – Plesetsk James Oberg March 24, 2009 [Adapted and updated from a 1999 article] Plesetsk is Russia's "other cosmodrome" north of Moscow. Operated by the Strategic Rocket Forces (and later the ‘Space Forces’) as a military space base, Plesetsk has been the mainstay of routine space launchings in Russia for more than forty years. But its role in the future of the much-reduced Russian space program remains uncertain, mainly because so little is known about the base and its background. Of Russia's two main cosmodromes, Baykonur is by far the better known. Located in now-independent Kazakhstan, on a vast desert east of the Aral Sea, Baykonur is where Sputnik and Lunik and Vostok were launched fifty years ago. It is where the cosmonauts are launched from, where lunar and planetary probes blast off, where Western newsmen and tourists visit. It is the Russian "Cape Canaveral". But 850 km north of Moscow, deep in the Russian 'taiga' (the ancient pine and birch forests) is another rocket launch site, called Plesetsk. Even the name, derived from an old Slavonic word for a bend in a river, is difficult for foreign tongues to say. Studying this secret installation has been even more tortuous than trying to pronounce it. If Baykonur is in a foreign land, surrounded by very un-Russian geographical and cultural features, Plesetsk is deeply rooted in the true Russian historical experience and culture. And while Baykonur's future remains fragile, this foundation appears to give Plesetsk a solid basis for continued and even expanded space operations. -

To estimate the prevalence and experience of dental caries among 15-year-old adolescents in north-west Russia between 2007 and 2008. Study design. A cross-sectional study. Methods. In total, 352 adolescents at the age of 15 were selected at random from 3 urban and 4 rural areas in the Arkhangelsk region. Girls comprised 53.4% of the sample. Caries experience was assessed at D3 level by a single calibrated examiner and was estimated as a sum of decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT). Results. The prevalence of caries was 91.8% with a mean DMFT of 4.92. On average, there were 2.61 decayed, 0.13 missing and 2.18 filled teeth per participant. No gender differences in the prevalence of caries in any of the settings or in the full sample were observed. In urban areas, the average number of decayed teeth was lower (2.15 vs. 2.95, p=0.006), while the number of filled teeth was greater (2.71 vs. 1.79, p<0.001) than in rural areas.
