Anointing of the Sick & Blessing of Prayer Shawls Saturday, October 5 5 pm This Sacrament is offered to those who are suffering a serious illness, upcoming operation, or declining health. To receive this Sacrament of anointing one ought to have gone to the Sacrament of Reconciliation prior or be aware of no unconfessed mortal sins. FAITH FORMATION St. Augustine once described sin as “a person turning inward.” When we begin to think only of ourselves, our personal wants and needs begin to consume our thoughts and actions, and that often leads us to sin. Many of us who find ourselves in this situation become sad, depressed, and distant from family and friends. In today’s gospel, the rich man is a perfect example of someone who thinks only of himself. And in doing so, he is completely blind to someone in desperate need laying right at his door. All of our actions, good or bad, have consequences. God calls us to open our hearts and turn our thoughts outward. Become aware of those around you and share freely with those who have less than yourself. Look around this coming week and become acutely aware of who are near you and is in need. Maybe it’s a neighbor, co-worker, family friend, or the person in standing in line in front of you at the grocery store. Take a chance and reach out to them. It can be as simple as a hug or a smile, or offering to pay for the milk and loaf of bread. You will soon find how good it feels to focus on others and not yourself. Become that witness for Jesus in your world.

What does a homeless person need? That may seem like an odd question since being homeless would indicate they certainly need a home. Beyond that though, what does a homeless person need? Most would guess the person needs food, money, clothing, medical care, and toiletries. Many parishes put together drives for those items. Is that all the person needs? It is easy to get caught up in all the things that easily come to mind so that we miss a key thing needed by someone homeless as well as all human beings: to be seen. Some our youth attended Called to Serve Workshop How many of us pass by homeless people and pretend and are now able to volunteer in our programs and they are not even there. Make. Care. EMBRACE. ##)T Dear Parishioners of St. John, St. Mary & St. Michael, The third core value is Embrace. Embrace is deLined as two different meanings: to hold someone closely in one’s arms or to accept and support a belief or theory willingly and enthusiastically. The second deLinition is highly important since our students learn to embrace the Word of God as they grow. Our teachers and staff help guide our students in learning who God is through the teachings of and embracing him into our lives. Teachers encourage the children they teach to embrace the life God has given them and to become active participants in the Catholic Faith. It is said that life is what you make it, which circles back to our Lirst core value: Make. We encourage embracing the differences in everyone when making friends and working as a team.
