Hold on to your hand when you are about To do an unkind act. Hold on to your tongue when you are just Ready to speak harshly. Hold on to your heart when evil persons Invite you to join their ranks. Hold on to your temper when you are Exited or angry, or others are angry with you. Hold on to the truth, for it will serve you well, Sam Weinstein and do you good throughout eternity. Hold on to your virtue—it is above all Price to you in all times and places. Hold on to your character, for it is And ever will be your best wealth.

Dear Friends: The Holy Days will soon be with us, but this year with COVID19 they will look very different. While (at this time of writing) we are planning for some experiential activities at The Temple, including a New Year Meet and Greet and a Parking Shofar/Tashlich Service, the majority of the liturgy and my High Holy Day sermons will be presented virtually as we still are unable to gather together as a congregation in our spiritual home. Despite these necessary changes, the Holy Days call upon us to be at home spiritually. We will not hold services here, but services will still hold significance if they enable us to “hold on” to what we should be as human beings. “Holding” our hand and refraining from acts of aggression, “holding” our tongue instead of speaking words that might make us feel good in the moment but will haunt us forever, hanging on to our integ- rity and character despite what others are doing and even get away with—when we are together as a congrega- tion we affirm these values publicly in our services, but in our hearts we know that the challenge of being able to “hold on” speaks to us individually. Many of the sins articulated by our liturgy speak about our behavior as it is manifested to those closest to us, those who know us best. In the words of our prayer book, how many of us have “passed judgment with- out knowledge of the facts?” How many of us have “deceived ourselves and others with half-truths?” How many of us have “condemned in our children the faults we tolerate in ourselves?” We know that the Holy Days will be different for us this year as we primarily contemplate in our homes, but these unique times also present us with an unusual opportunity. As you listen to the service at home, pause the liturgy and ask those with you to discuss our tradition’s expectations. Ask them if you have “engaged in gossip and in repeated slander.” Ask them if you “have conformed to fashion and not to conscience.” Ask them if, in their opinion, you have been able to “hold on” to your “temper,” or “truth,” or “virtue!” We cannot change our circumstances because of coronavirus, but these unusual circumstances can change us if our quest for atonement at home makes our char- acter one that we are proud to “hold on to.” These Holy Days will be different for us in form. Let them also be different for us in substance. Hoping that 5781 will bring us a good year, and good health. Rabbi Sam Weinstein

2 Notes from the Cantor … Making your space sacred 9.20

For generations, Jewish families have been passing down wisdom about how to create certain holidays at home. From a young age, Jewish preschoolers learn with plush Shabbat sets, taking out Shabbat candles, a kiddush cup, bottle of wine, and challah for their Shabbat table, even learning how to put on a special tablecloth and vase of flowers for the most special day of the week. For Passover, families pass down recipes through the generations, perhaps also special sets of silverware and dishes, and rearrange the furniture to fit more people in the house for a meal. But on Rosh HaShanah and , we usually leave the house and go to the , which has been cleaned and made festive by the staff. Not this year.

We have become accustomed to doing so many things from our homes that we never did there before - pretty much everything. Many of us now work at home and our children go to school at home. Meals are all cooked at home. If you’re anything like us, your home has become a little overwhelmed by all its added responsibility, and there’s a lot more cleaning and organizing and putting away every day, not to mention loads of dishes. Now we are faced with High Holy Days at home for the first time. How can we make this experience special, so that it doesn’t look like every other busy, chaotic day at home? Let’s see what cues we can take from non-pandemic times, and adapt them for the times we are now living in.

In a normal year, here are some significant things that happen on the High Holy Days: • We don’t work. Even though it seems even more like every other day this year, take the day off. This will be easy for many on Rosh HaShanah, which falls on a Saturday. Even if it feels like there’s not much to do or anywhere to go, take the day off, take time for introspection or to relax with family.

• We attend services. Take advantage of the many services, programs and projects the Temple is creat- ing to enrich the Holy Days. There are also countless other free programs available online for study this year.

• We dress up. It may seem unnecessary, and you certainly don’t need to dress as if you are going to synagogue, but consider how wearing special clothing makes you feel different. It is traditional to wear white on the High Holy Days, you may want to consider trying out this tradition this year.

• We polish the silver. Part of the preparation in the synagogue each year involves making sure every- thing looks perfect to greet the new year. You may want to bring this tradition home this year, cleaning the house and making sure everything looks as good as possible as you create your home prayer space.

• We rearrange the furniture. Each year at the Temple, we open the back wall of the sanctuary and put extra chairs in so everyone has a place to sit. While you won’t need to do this at your home, you may want to consider if rearranging some furniture might give a different feeling to the High Holy Days or create a better home sanctuary.

• We decorate the bimah. I know it’s almost time for services each year when the beautiful white flowers arrive for the front of the bimah, and when those special bouquets get hoisted up on to the wall. How can you decorate your house this year to create that special feeling? Perhaps it may be by getting your own white flowers, or creating some art (either yourself or with your family) that reflects the themes of the High Holy Days. The website higholidaysathome.com suggests making an altar - something that has been part of Jewish tradition since the earliest stories - by choosing a flat space, covering it with a cloth, and adding meaningful items to it. These may be Judaica pieces, or family photos, or items that you or your family create to symbolize the Holy Days. You could incorporate this altar into your prayer space, or maybe put it in a hallway or somewhere you will pass by often.

There are so many changes this year, and this time of year is likely to be difficult as we will miss seeing family, seeing our community, being able to travel to wherever we usually observe the Holy Days. But by taking some time to transform our homes into holy spaces, hopefully we can still imbue these days with a feeling of sanctity.

Many of our congregants miss spending time in the synagogue. High Holy Days are a time when many congregants look forward to spending personal time in our worship spaces. We are making available a time of Meditation and Reflection during the month of Elul and during the Days of Awe. Each household will be able to sign up for a 15-minute time slot at which time they will be able to reflect in front of the open Ark and visit the Memorial Boards. Reservations are a must. Call the Temple at 419-885-3341 during office hours beginning Tuesday, September 8-Friday, September 11, 2020 to reserve your slot. The Following precautions will be taken for all entering the building (these best practices are subject to change as new guidelines are coming out daily): • All guests will be greeted at the front door, temperatures will be taken, and hand hygiene practiced as soon as they enter the building. • You will be ushered to the worship space by a greeter and assigned a pew. • Only one household will be in the worship space at a time. • Everyone entering the building will always be required to wear a mask. • Until there is an immunization available, children under 2, and anyone else unable to wear a mask will be unable to enter the building. • Singing will be avoided. • You will exit the Social Hall Door exit of the Temple.

*** Covid-related safety precautions have been implemented at the Temple; however, we acknowledge that such efforts do not create a risk-free environment for those planning functions and/or attending the site and everyone should be governed accordingly. By choosing to attend the synagogue in person, you are personally assuming all risks that are associated with Covid-19.

High Holy Day Food Drive Due to the Covid- 19 pandemic the Temple’s High Holy Day Food Drive will look different this year. We are asking congregants to purchase grocery store gift cards or make a monetary donation in lieu of grocery donations. The gift cards and donations will be delivered to the food pantry at Jewish Family Service. Normally our students help with transferring groceries and hygiene products to the food pantry and help sort them and put them away however this will not be possible with Covid. We still want to help and keep things convenient and most importantly safe for everyone at the same time!

High Holy Day Mitzvah Meals will be available for the entire Jewish High Holy Day community for Erev Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Break Fast. In addition to the The Temple’s traditional Erev Rosh Hashanah meals, the Mitzvah Meals menu will also include the option of kosher Beef Stuffed Cabbage and Matzoh Ball Soup from a kosher caterer in Detroit. Watch your Temple email and website and Friday Facts for details on menu choices and how and when to order.
