Unattractive Leah Genesis 29: 16-35 I was having originally some difficulty coming up with a title for my sermon. I titled the first draft ‘Ugly Leah,’ but, I decided against it. To me and to many, ‘ugly’ is simply an ugly word. And we are not sure about Leah’s appearance. She is called ‘weak eyed in scripture. We only know she was contrasted to her beautiful sister Rachel. The Hebrew word translated ‘weak-eyed’ ‘rak,’ means ‘weak’ or ‘dull.’ So a girl who is called ‘dull- eyed’ is probably not accepting that as much of a complement. As I was contemplating my title, I did think of the television show that just got cancelled called “Ugly Betty.” The plot consists of the main character, Betty Suarez, a very plain girl lacking fashion sense who is thrust into a different world when she lands a position with a major, trendy high fashion magazine. Some of her co-workers endeavor to constantly humiliate her because of her lackluster appearance. However, through persistence, and a loyal spirit, she gains friends in the company and is a key instrument in moving the magazine and certain co-workers forward. Even the Leah’s and the Betty’s of the world can make a big difference. But in the end I settled on my present title, because obviously Leah did not measure up to the external attributes of sister Rachael. But as we will see, despite setbacks and unfulfilled hopes, she kept her faith in God. Leah serves as an example of one who remains faithful even when the chips are down. -

Chapter 1 Ļ Life and Contexts ļ n a letter that he sent to the Cretan scholar Saul Hako- I hen Ashkenazi a few years prior to his death, Isaac Abar- banel observed that he had written all of his “commen- taries and compilations” after I left my homeland (’eresខ moladeti); for all of the days that I was in the courts and palaces of kings occupied in their service I had no time to study and looked at no book but squandered my days in vanity and years in futile pursuit so that wealth and honor would be mine; yet the wealth was lost by evil adventure and “honor is departed from Israel” [1 Sam. 4:21]. Only after wandering to and fro over the earth from one kingdom to another . did I “seek out the book of the Lord” [Isa. 34:16].1 This personal retrospective, stark even after allowances are made for its imprecision and an autobiographical topos that it reflects,2 alludes to major foci of Abarbanel’s life. He engaged in large-scale commercial and financial en- deavors. He held positions at three leading European courts. He was a broad scholar who authored a multifaceted literary corpus comprising a variety of full- bodied exegetical tomes and theological tracts. And during roughly the last third of his life, in consequence of Spain’s expulsion of its Jews in 1492, his existence was characterized by itinerancy, often in isolation from family and scholarly peers. Situate these themes and their cognates on a wider historical, cultural, and intellectual canvas, and the result is a rich tableau at the center of which stands an ambitious seeker of power, prestige, and wealth who ar- dently cultivated the intellectual life and its vocations as exegete, theologian, and writer. -

MICAH AT A GLANCE This book records some bad news and good news as predicted by Micah. The bad news is the ten northern tribes of Israel would be captured by the Assyrians and the two southern tribes would suffer the same fate at the hands of the Babylonians. The good news foretold of the Messiah’s birth in Bethlehem and the ultimate establishment of the millennial kingdom of God. BOTTOM LINE INTRODUCTION QUESTION (ASKED 4 B.C.): WHERE IS HE THAT IS BORN KING OF THE JEWS? (MT. 2:2) ANSWER (GIVEN 740 B.C.): “BUT THOU, BETHLEHEM EPHRATAH, THOUGH THOU BE LITTLE AMONG THE THOUSANDS OF JUDAH, YET OUT OF THEE SHALL HE COME FORTH” (Micah 5:2). The author of this book, Micah, was a contemporary with Isaiah. Micah was a country preacher, while Isaiah was a court preacher. -

The PAS and American Abolitionism: A Century of Activism from the American Revolutionary Era to the Civil War By Richard S. Newman, Associate Professor of History Rochester Institute of Technology The Pennsylvania Abolition Society was the world's most famous antislavery group during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Indeed, although not as memorable as many later abolitionists (from William Lloyd Garrison and Lydia Maria Child to Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth), Pennsylvania reformers defined the antislavery movement for an entire generation of activists in the United States, Europe, and even the Caribbean. If you were an enlightened citizen of the Atlantic world following the American Revolution, then you probably knew about the PAS. Benjamin Franklin, a former slaveholder himself, briefly served as the organization's president. French philosophes corresponded with the organization, as did members of John Adams’ presidential Cabinet. British reformers like Granville Sharp reveled in their association with the PAS. It was, Sharp told told the group, an "honor" to be a corresponding member of so distinguished an organization.1 Though no supporter of the formal abolitionist movement, America’s “first man” George Washington certainly knew of the PAS's prowess, having lived for several years in the nation's temporary capital of Philadelphia during the 1790s. So concerned was the inaugural President with abolitionist agitation that Washington even shuttled a group of nine slaves back and forth between the Quaker State and his Mount Vernon home (still, two of his slaves escaped). The PAS was indeed a powerful abolitionist organization. PAS Origins The roots of the Pennsylvania Abolition Society date to 1775, when a group of mostly Quaker men met at a Philadelphia tavern to discuss antislavery measures. -

Abraham- Known as the “father” of the Jewish people, Abraham is thought to be the first person to believe in ONE God. Abraham and his wife Sarah left their home to come to the land of Canaan to build a home for his children, grandchildren and future family members. Sarah- As the wife of Abraham, she left her home to help make a home for the Jewish people. Sarah gave birth to Isaac when she was old. Isaac- As son of Abraham and Sarah, Isaac led the Jewish people, after Abraham. Isaac and his wife Rebecca had twin sons, Jacob and Esau. Rebecca- Rebecca showed kindness by helping Isaac’s servant. She had twin sons, Jacob and Esau. Esau was strong and enjoyed hunting. Jacob stayed indoors helping with house chores. Rebecca thought Jacob should be the next leader of the Jewish people, even though it was Esau’s right as the older son. Rebecca helped Jacob trick Isaac. Isaac blessed Jacob instead of Esau and Jacob became the next leader. Jacob- Jacob was the clever, younger son of Isaac and Rebecca. With the help of his mother, Jacob became the next leader of the Jewish people.
