From Music Director Rainer Beckmann:

Dear Fellow Recorder Players and Enthusiasts,

With this month's "Light in Darkness" playlist, we will continue our November-December project of prominently adding to our mix of recorders both "big" bass recorders and other instruments lower than the regular .

"Light in Darkness" is modeled after last year's successful "A Holiday Celebration" playlist. Instrumental and vocal compositions by Jewish Baroque composer Salomone Rossi are combined with 16th century Advent and Christmas by Cristóbal de Morales and Orlando de Lasso. As in December last year, a double-choir piece by Hieronymus Praetorius concludes the list.

I am well aware that some of you enjoy listening to recordings of the pieces on our playlists before a meeting. As a special Holiday token, I have this time included a list of links to recordings available on the internet that I personally find inspiring.

Please note that the recorders in my instrumentations of the playlist pieces do not always correlate with the instruments indicated on the respective scores or parts! Please mark your music according to my playlist instrumentations.

With warm regards and my best wishes for a Holiday Season that is full of light,

Rainer Beckmann

PRS member Jane Allison sends this announcement with her comment, "I would love to do it, hopefully with others from PRS":

March 21, 2017, is Johann Sebastian Bach's 332nd birthday. To celebrate his work and create music for commuters, musicians around the world are sharing his music by performing in subways, public spaces, and concerts. The Bach in the Subways (BitS) event has grown to include numerous cities around the world. Until now, Philadelphia has not been represented. BitS Philadelphia is looking for individuals and ensembles, young and old, to participate in the first Bach in the Subways event here.

Performers must agree to the following:  Play J.S. Bach any time, anywhere between 12:00 AM on Saturday, March 18, and 11:59 PM on Tuesday, March 21, 2017.  Make sure my performance is open & accessible to all – a musical gift for anyone who wants to hear it.  Charge no admission fee, nor accept any money, nor conduct any other commercial transaction immediately before, during, or after my performance.  Never charge any other musicians to join me.  Perform inside SEPTA, PATCO, and Amtrak.

To play inside a SEPTA transit station, you need a SEPTA Performance Permit. Applications and instructions can be found on the Bach in the Subways/Philadelphia link mentioned above. You can also visit SEPTA's website, www.septa.org/policy/perform.html or call 215-580-7643. Mention "Bach in the Subways."

For more details, visit www.bachinthesubways.org/philadelphia or contact local BitS coordinator, Jim Pavlock, [email protected]

Thank you, Jane!

More Free Recorder Music from Stephen Arndt

Hello PRS,

You may remember that I wrote a couple of years ago about my “One-Part Inventions” for solo . I have now composed and recorded a second set of twenty-one pieces for solo tenor (or soprano) recorder. They should be pretty well within the range of the intermediate player.

I would like to make the scores of the pieces available free of charge to my fellow recorder players. Both the recordings and the scores are available on my website: www.verseandsong.com/song/recorder/one-part- inventions-for-tenor-recorder/ (You can still find the earlier collection here: www.verseandsong.com/song/recorder/one-part-inventions-2/.) In addition, there is a still-image video on YouTube to accompany the audio recordings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Du-WWPH9nmg (and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtY8YRxIFn4 for the earlier collection).

You can listen to an individual piece by clicking on its title or to all the pieces successively by using the playlist at the top of the page. Similarly, you can download an individual score or the entire collection.

I would appreciate it if you would share this information with the members of your chapter and anyone else you think might be interested. Please feel free to leave a comment on my website or YouTube pages and to invite others to do so as well. I look forward to any and all feedback.

Best regards and Happy Holidays,

Stephen Arndt
