USE OF THE SIMULTANEOUS CROSS-RELATION BY SIXTEENTH CENTURY ENGLISH AND CONTINENTAL COMPOSERS Tim Montgomery Music H 391 LmnARY ~tJ=N-IVE-R-·SJTY OF RICHMOND YIRGINIA 2317S The principle of the s~multaneous cross-relation in vocal music has generally and commonly been associated with the English composers of the sixteenth century.(M p.71; R 824 n.J4) This ~ssumption has been more specifically connected with secular music, namely the English madrigal.(Dy p.13) To find the validity of this assumption in relation to both secular and sacred music I have C()mpared the available vocal music of three English composers, two major and one minor: Thomas Tallis (1505-1585), William Byrd (1.543-1623), and Thomas Whythorne (1528-1596). In deciding whether the simultaneous cross-relation was an aspect of English music exclusively, I examined vocal music of three composers of the continent, con temporaries of the English, for the use, if any, of the simul taneous cross-relation. -

CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by IUScholarWorks Phrase Painting and Goal Orientation In Two Late Gesualdo Madrigals MICHAEL E BURDICK I The late madrigals of Carlo Gesualdo have challenged the minds and ears of theorists for over three centuries. This challenge comes largely from the unorthodox type of chromatic harmony that we find in certain passages-a chromaticism that seems to belie its own place in the history of Western music. Of the late madrigals of Gesualdo, two of the most frequently quoted and analyzed are "Io pur respiro" and "Moro lasso" from his sixth book of madrigals. These two works, likewise, are the focus of at tention in this article. It is not the intent of this paper to attempt an explana tion of Gesualdo's unique chromaticism in terms of the harmonic practices of the Renaissance or Baroque periods. This has already been attempted by numerous authors over the years, with highly diversified and controversial results. However, some of these results will be presented here as a preliminary setting to the principal goal of this paper, which is to examine two structural principles in operation in these madrigals that offer to give greater understanding and meaning to the chord progressions themselves. Perhaps the most objective attempt to catalogue Gesualdo's chromaticism in a stylistic approach can be found in John Clough's article "The Leading Tone in Direct TWO GESUALDO MADRIGALS 17 Chromaticism: From Renaissance to Baroque."l The article gives a summary of different types of chromatic progres sions, with the emphasis on chromatic-third relationships (the chromatic-third progression being the salient feature of Gesualdo's more unconventional chromatic progressions). -

The royal privilege for publication bears the date 1578 on the page which also contains the “erratas”. The Obras contain an extensive and very useful introduction in unnumbered pages, followed by 200 folio’s of printed music, superscribed in the upper margin “Compendio de Musica / de Antonio de Cabeçon.” A facsimile is in IMSLP. The first editor Felipe Pedrell (1841-1922), Hispaniae Schola Musica Sacra, Vols.3, 4, 7, 8, Barcelona: Juan Pujol & C., 1895-98, did not provide a complete edition, but a little more than half of it. He omitted the intabulations, “glosas”, of other composers, apparently objecting a lack of originality to them. He also gave an extensive introduction in Spanish and French. This edition may be found in IMSLP too. Pedrell stopped his complete edition after folio 68 (of 200), and made a selection of remaining works. -

Neal, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2011 This dissertation examines the sacred compositions for six or more voices by Nicolas Gombert (1495-1560). Two multivoice (six or more voices) compositional techniques emerged in sixteenth-century Europe. The first of these, the Italian double-choir (coro spezzato) technique, has received far more attention from scholars. This practice divided the vocal ensemble into two groups that sang either separately or together, and whose members remained consistent throughout the musical composition. The second technique, practiced by composers in northern Europe, also split settings into two or more vocal groups, but the members of the groupings constantly changed. -

Stile Antico records for Decca. PROGRAM NOTES Our program tonight is devoted to the wonderful music of Josquin des Prez, marking 500 years since his death in 1521. Josquin was unquestionably a star in his own time: no lesser figure than Martin Luther praised him as “the master of the notes,” while for the theorist Glarean, “no one has more effectively expressed the passions of the soul in music…his talent is beyond description.” So what is it about Josquin that exerted such a spell on the generations that followed—and which still speaks so eloquently to us today? Much about Josquin’s biography and career remains shadowy: it isn’t always possible to pin down where he was working, and—with a few exceptions—the chronology of his works can only be attempted on stylistic grounds. -
The Renaissance Period
The Renaissance Period The Renaissance, which literally means “rebirth” in French, saw movement and change in many different spheres of cultural activity as Europe began to rediscover and identify with its Greco-Roman heritage. The natural sciences (in particular astronomy) began advancing at a rapid pace, and some philosophers began to discuss secular humanism as a valid system. The discovery of the American continents by European navigators resulted in the first widespread speculations of international law and began a crisis of consci ence over human rights that would haunt the West for centuries to come. In particular, however, the Renaissance is remembered for a great a flourishing of the Arts. Secular instrumental music (for early instruments like shawms, crumhorns, and sackbuts) became increasingly popular during this period and composers began to write it down for the first time. The polyphonic madrigal became very popular in England thanks to composers like John Dowland and William Byrd. The motet, a three-part polyphonic composition written for voices or instruments, became popular around this time as well. Despite the increase in secularism, it was still within a religious context that the Renaissance arts truly thrived. Renaissance popes (corrupt as they were) were great patrons of such artists as Michelangelo, Raphael, and Gianlorenzo Bernini. Composers of church music expanded polyphony to six, eight, or even ten interwoven parts. The masses of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Tomás Luis de Victoria, and Orlando di Lasso in particular remain some of the most beautiful music ever composed. This polyphonic style was also used by the French composer Josquin des Prez, who wrote both sacred and secular music. -

In addition to its National Gallery debut on December 18, 2005, the group has performed at the Smithsonian Institution, the xm Satellite Radio live perfor- mance studio, and a number of Washington area churches. The Washing- ton Post described a recent performance as “genuinely beautiful . rapturous music-making.” The ensemble has been profiled in publications as diverse as the Washington City Paper and Early Music America magazine. -

Notes on the Music Gesualdo: Madrigals from Books V and VI Four hundred years after his death, Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa, remains the most tantalising of musicians, the most alluring of myths. We are drawn back to the dark flame of this strange, obsessive music like moths to the candle, like lovers who can’t let go. At the heart of his work we sense a mystery, an inward-turning, a kind of silence: its extreme chromatic harmonies and wild polarities no mere artifice or exoticism, but emanating from a soul whose nature is other, lying apart from us, outside our cosmology, orbiting a different sun. This is music which begets myths, and its composer’s sad and troubled life supplies plenty. -

As the smallest unit in the ecclesiastical hierarchy, the parish was the level on which Christians practiced and experienced religion on a daily basis. From an administrative point of view, parishes were defined as territorial entities, but they were in fact constituted by the com- munity of its inhabitants, especially in smaller towns or rural areas. Parishioners – the churchwardens among them – had the respon- sibility to care for their weakest neighbors and contribute to the maintenance of the religious infrastructure. Such commitments often ‘fostered a sense of belonging and ownership in the parish community’.1 Its material exponent was the parish church, often the largest stone building, and both literally and figuratively the center of the town. The church was the framework for the proper adminis- tration of the sacraments. Key moments in parishioners’ lives were ritually celebrated here (fig. 80), from baptism of new-born children and their subsequent confirmation and participation in commu- nion at Mass, over marriage, to funeral rites and burial after having received the last rites by the parish priest.2 The stories chaplain Munters recorded in his diary show that, during the sixteenth century, many of these communal rites of pas- sage were subjected to great pressure. Protestants started question- ing and taunting not just religious images, pilgrimages and miracles, but also the core elements of the parish liturgy.
