We hope you all had an enjoyable sum- mer and that all our students have returned to us refreshed and ready to learn. As we all start to get use to the ‘new normal’ we will endeavour to try and keep you as in- formed as possible. As nobody knows how things will play out over the coming months we are just having to take things on a day by day, week by week basis. Any plans therefore may unfortunately be subject to change. Learner of the Month - July 2020 Our Learner of the Month for July 2020 was awarded to Ethan Palfreyman who is now in 8AX for his hard work and commit- ment to learning over lockdown. Nominations were also received for the following students: DY Luke Turner 10DY, George Cartwright 11SX, Georgina Turley 10DX, Oliver Hanney 8TY, Mia Baker-Brown 9SY, Elliott Astbury 11DY, Tyla-Louise Gooden 11SY, James Hawkins 9AY, Priya- Brooklyn Jagdev - 9DY. Congratulations go to all students who received a nomination for July 2020. House Arts Competition Launch We have recently launched our annual House Arts Competition which celebrates the fantastic student talent we have across Drama, Music, Dance and Art. Stu- dents normally audition in front of a panel of judges and then chosen perform- ers/artists showcase their talents at an Evening performance in the school theatre in front of parents/carers. This year however, the competition will be virtual, with students entering by sending in videos/photos of their work which will then be judged. The winners will be announced after half term. Full details of the com- petition and how to enter are below. Please do encourage your child to take part in this fantastic competition. The categories: Drama - Monologue or Duologue; Music - Solo or Ensemble Performance; Dance - Solo or Ensemble Performance; Art - Original Piece or Photograph. Theme: entries need to be on the theme of ‘Respect’. The Prizes: each entry receives 3 house points; the winner of each category receives 20 house points, a certificate and a tro- phy; the runner up in each category receives 10 house points, a certificate and a trophy; the winning house will receive 1000 house points and be presented with the House Arts trophy. How to submit your work: You will need to video your performance for Drama, Music and Dance. MAXIMUM TIME of 1 minute in length. Students will then need to send their entry directly to the subject judge. For Art you can send your photograph directly or send a photo of your art work. Please check our website under Year Strategies > Year 10 as our Introduction to GCSEs Evening video is now available for you to view. The Year 10 Strategy Leader is Mr Fox who will be happy to an- swer any questions you may have so please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Year 11 GCSE Evening This event recently took place online via a pre-recorded video. Please check our website under Year Strategies > Year 11 as our Year 11 GCSE Evening video is now available for you to view. The Year 11 Strategy Leader is Mrs Bassan who will be happy to answer any questions you may have so please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Year 8 Boys & Girls HPV Injections (Dose 1/2) - Friday 2 October 2020 HPV Injections will be taking place on Friday 2 October 2020, for all our Year 8 stu- dents. Vaccination consent forms must be completed (even if you do not wish your child to have this injection). Your child will NOT be able to have their injection without con- sent. HPV injections are given in 2 doses, there must be a minimum 6 month gap in be- tween doses. Open Evening - Thursday 15 October 2020 Due to the current situation our Open Evening 2020 will still be happening but in a very different format. Although this will be different, we do still hope that what we are planning will give you a good flavour of the school so that you can make the right choice for your child’s future. Below is the range of options that will be available this year to parents/carers and prospective new students who want to find out more about life at Dormston. Promotional Video Very soon you will find a promotional video on our website which will give you a good idea of how we work at Dormston on a day to day basis. The video will pro- vide an insight into our vision, mission and values and demonstrate how the 5 year journey through Dormston School might look for each student. This video will be available on our website under Parents > Open Evening 2020 on/or be- fore Thursday 15 October 2020. Virtual ‘Live’ Open Evening - Thursday 15 October 2020 at 7.00pm On Thursday 15 October 2020 at 7.00pm prospective parents/carers will be able to join our online ‘live streamed’ Open Evening where Mr Dixon, Head Teacher will talk about the school and provide information on all the topics and issues you might want to find out about including; attendance, behaviour, progress and at- tainment, rewards, extra-curricular, parental communication and safeguarding. This will be followed by visits to some of our departments. The evening will con- clude with a question and answer session where parents/carers will be able to type their questions for us to answer live on air. We strongly recommend that you sit down together as a family to watch this very special evening from the comfort of your own home. In order to see this evening live you simply need to visit our website http://www.dormston.dudley.sch.uk/ and click on Parents > Open Evening 2020 and you will see the video link. The live stream commences at 7.00pm. Please note that there may however be a slight delay with the start time so please be pa- tient. If you are unable to join us for the Virtual ‘Live’ Open Evening then please don’t worry as the evening will be recorded and will appear under the Open Evening 2020 section of our website shortly after the event. We will also be writing to all of our feeder primary schools shortly to provide infor- mation about how parents can gain access to this evening and what we are offer- ing. A member of Senior Teaching staff will also hopefully be visiting our main feeder pri- mary schools that are allowing visitors in order to have a talk to your child about life at Dormston. All our main feeder Primary Schools will also be receiving copies of our prospectus for each Year 6 student.
