Founded as an Augustinian Canons’ Monastery in 1229, the whole complex underwent extensive structural changes in the 17th century. In 1840 Archduke Johann acquired the Stainz demesne. He established here a model farm and had fruit and vineyards planted around the castle. Today, Schloss Stainz is owned by his descendants, the Meran family. Hunting Museum Schloss Stainz Hunting culture through the ages For millennia, hunting has been an integral part of human life. Starting in September 2006, the new museum of hunting at Stainz Castle will be showcasing hunting culture in all its facets, not only presenting an extensive synopsis in terms of cultural history but also focusing on the interaction of man and nature. Hunting Museum: Innovative presentation in historical walls In several stages of construction an exhibition area of 1200m² was created, new depots built, the box-office and shop areas redesigned, and the administration area revitalised at Stainz Castle, that was built in 1695 and acquired by Archduke John in 1840. The innovative presentation not only fits in consummately with the historical setting of Stainz Castle, it also spotlights the long standing tradition of hunting in Styria, particularly the founder of the Joanneum, Archduke John, who was known as a passionate hunter and whose heirs now run Stainz Castle as a modern enterprise.

Diese erfreuliche Zahl ist in erster Linie darauf zurückzuführen, dass der im November 2011 eröffnete Teil des neuen Joanneumsviertels mit dem Besucher/innen-Zentrum, der Neuen Galerie Graz und den Multimedialen Sammlungen sehr gut angenommen wird. Für das Joanneumsviertel gilt es, mit der Eröffnung des Naturkunde- museums im März 2013 das besondere Potenzial dieser Neupräsentation für eine breite Besucherschicht auszunutzen und die erfreuliche Entwick- lung weiterzuführen.     Universalmuseum Joanneum Press Universalmuseum Joanneum [email protected] Mariahilferstraße 4, 8020 Graz, Austria Telephone +43-316/8017-9211 www.museum-joanneum.at Universalmuseum Joanneum Austria’s first museum The Joanneum was founded as the first public museum in Austria in 1811 by Archduke Johann in the spirit of the Enlightenment, to “spread the education of the mind”, “to stimulate curiosity”, and “to facilitate learning”. 200 years later, too, this mission still has currency, even though the world, and the Joanneum as well, have changed fundamentally since 1811. Today the Joanneum is one of the largest universal museums in Europe, with over twentytwo collections in its custody, which are organised into ten museum departments. Four further departments assume central “service functions” for the running of the museum, as well as for handling visitors to the Universalmuseum Joanneum. More than 4.7 million collection objects form the basis for a programme of exhibition and events broad in theme terms, which is on show in thirteen museum locations in Graz, as well as Trautenfels, Stainz, Stübing, Premstätten, Alpl, Krieglach and Wagna. The Universalmuseum Joanneum set a record in 2016 with some 600,000 visitors, and employs around 500 personnel to carry out its tasks and mission. In the first few decades of its existence, the Joanneum was an educational and research institution with a scientific, technical emphasis; the collections that belonged to this served both for study and museum presentation purposes. The Joanneum’s address at the time was the ‘Lesliehof’ in Raubergasse, Graz, to which a large Botanical Garden was attached, known as the ‘Joanneum Garden’, which lasted till the 1880s.

    MUSEUMS WITH HOLDINGS OF TOBACCO-RELATED ARTIFACTS Compiled by Ben Rapaport (Winter, 2018-2019) The following is a list of museums (and other places) around the globe having a few ... or many tobacco-related relics, artifacts, and antiques. I do not guarantee that (1) the museum is still open to the public or (2) items once cited as "tobacco" are still current holdings. Where specific information has been provided to me by the museum's curator or by visitors, I have noted the holdings. For German museums, I have used Billerbeck, Mit Rauchern lässt sich redden (1993) ​ ​ and Franz Wandinger, “Rauchzeichen in Deutschen Museen,” Teil 1 (Knasterkopf, Heft 14, 2001 ​ ​ and Teil 2, Band 15, 2002). Both sources identify and describe German museums that have any segment of tobacco or tobacco-related artifacts. In some instances, the museum address is not complete, so if you have corrections (or additions), I would appreciate your input. I hope this list proves useful in your global travels or at-home research. Bear in mind that, occasionally, museums open and close without much public fanfare, and others relocate quite often, so this edition may not be wholly up-to-date. Check the Web or contact the museum before you plan a visit and to determine whether the artifacts you desire to see are on permanent display or in storage, and if you require a special appointment. Yet, the kipplauf is an important part of both firearms and hunting heritage. Certainly, its roots are embedded in the foundation of both the freedom to hunt and in the conservation of wildlife resources – the two prongs of Safari Club International’s mission.
